As a life long martial artist. THANK YOU so very much for posting this. I love seeing how many cultures and traditions solve the problem of mortal combat. It always amazes me how similar truly effective fighting techniques are. This video was a delight and acheived it's stated purpose perfectly. I feel more educated than I did before I watched it.
I'll tell u guys something, Shastra Vidya occurs in the Ramayana when Sage Vishwamitra trains Lord Rama(Most known!) in these martial arts but much before that in the Shiv Purana.. there is evidence that Lord Shiva taught these fighting arts to his son Lord Kartikeya to fight the demon Taraka! Now people may say this is religious or mythologocal hogwash but the fact remains that these are THE most ancient scriptures in the world having references about martial arts!!

The real technique with the Khukuri for Gurkhas is that it is used as a tool. So it becomes part of you. No fancy work. Just hack.

Interesting stuff... particularly the history. As a Humanist I have a great interest in, and respect for the Sikh culture... more so than in other religious cultures. This was compounded during the riots here in the UK when a group of Sikhs from the local temple stood side by side guys from the local rugby club to protect the street from rioters. Now I realise those rioters really did get off lightly. 😉

I’ve spent a lifetime studying martial arts of all kinds from 12 years old to now 72 and moving all around the world, but having spent 25 years living in various parts of Asia and 2 years living in India, I found this new and extremely interesting. I can truely say this man is a true master swordsman! Many of things he discussed can be put into other styles and forms. I personally perfer to wield two short swords or daggers and have chosen that as my style. Never thought about this style of sword before because I didnt like the design but I'll be damned if it isnt effective. I will have to get me a Klopis or Kukuri, I cant wait to watch more videos! :)

Not exactly. Sikhs only worship Waheguru (Parabrahma), but Shiva, Chandi, Kali, Hanuman, etc are all well respected.

Being the last of knowledgeable warriors to know this beautiful art, have you yet trained enough individuals to have others reach the status of Gurdev? There should be more centers to keep this great tradition alive worldwide.

BTW, gangsters use the Khukuri with the blunt side also. To intimidate... and it can even break bone. Plus, if you get arrested the charge is weaker (not attempted murder).

Yes because Sashtar vidya is related to both communities. Moreover if you study sikh religion you will get to know most of the sikhs are descendents of Hindus. There was a time where most of Hindus became sikhs to save India from external invasions especially punjab region. And definitely a true Hindu respects Sikh and a true Sikh respects Hindu by sharing their cultural identities.

Brother great art i have no questions about your Vidya ,but the Shastra that you used Khukuri that never had a hilt till 18 century when the looks for the weapon were modernised by the influence of the (European swords and Weapons) to have a hilt till then it just have a wooden Hilt ( mooth) as it was a multi utility weapon used in Regions of Nepal and nearby (Variations of the weapons can be found as the art syle changes from town to town),please clearify if the weapon that you showed with the more manoeuvre hilt is a authentic one or not

You are correct, foot work is extremely important. However, your partner broke one of cardinal rules of fencing, he did not keep his weapon in-front of him at all times.
Not taking anything away from my Chinese brothers...Bodhidharma was the first monk who introduced Martial arts in China when he started the White Horse monastery, he took learnings from ancient Indian martial arts like Kalari Payattu from Kerala and Shastra Vidya from Puri! They further innovated it into Kung-Fu no doubt! but it was taken from India to protect Buddhist Monks travelling from India to China against robbers in the Jungles that lay in between...
The Khukuri is Traditional weapon of Nepalese people as sikh carry swords or knife the khukuri is the same every Nepalese people carry and khukuri was designed in Nepal khukuri is a multipurpose weapon and khukuri is not from india when Nepalese warrior Gurkhas fought for India they took khukuri there and they started making khukuri

i have an indian friend, i practice different styles of kung fu which was originally from india. im interested in how his ancestors fought.
not sure i understand that, because someone else said that Sikhs are NOT hindu but have an entirely different belief system. And I always thought of Buddhism as being a belief system seperate from other belief systems. I'm going to have do some research on this. Do you know where I may find some helpful info on Hindu beliefs vis a vis Sikhs?

I have a feeling that seeing as both are Indians, these techniques are most likely more common among the Indian culture as opposed to one specific religion that may exist in India. Most dagger fighting (Or any fighting) is fairly universal anyway. I would assume that if the Sikhs had their own fighting system based on their knife they carry, it would be VERY similar to not only every knife fighting system on earth, but even more so to whatever style the Hindus would do.
I keep hearing about the blood drip thing. It just doesn't make sense.
It seems to me that cutting at someone's hand like that while he's attacking you wont do much to help you survive, in fact it may make it harder to actually win the fight... My reasoning behind it is that he has already built up momentum with the blade and putting your own blade in front of you to stab his hand would render his hand useless for all future strikes, sure, but the blow he already launched is still very likely to land, hence why it would be more beneficial for you to actually parry the blow... In any case its extremely hard to be pinpoint accurate with your own weapon and hand is a small target and moving fast, not to mention that not all people swing the same, are the same height etc. So you cant just work on your muscle memory either. The blade itself is a bigger target than his hand, go for the blade (parry)
In HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) strikes to the wrists and hands are very common, since if I cut his hand and move away, I retain full mobility and he does not, I'd imagine it's the same in Shastar Vidya
Mr Roberts I agree but that works if your opponent hasn't built up the momentum yet. If he is simply not attacking at that given time, going for the hand is a great move.
If you respond with an offline step and let him pass you and just leave you blade in the path of his blow, his momentum works to his detriment, not yours.

But I do not know ,Master , if I agree with the fact that the Khukuri originated in India ,The Greek KOPIS has a archeological record in Europe as far as Spain in the Ancient world and was shown in Art and in the Archeological record in Greece as before 340BC.. could be wrong ?.Never seen it that early in any Archeology from India ? But I believe firmly the weapon was brought to India by Alexander III ( the Great) and copied in Nepal , by either Greek expatriates or native populations . With all respect , great work good video.

for a start ,the gurkhas are not the nepalis that were in nepal at the time of alexander,they are of mongol heritage ,they came in 13th century with timerlaine,if my memory serves me well,so did the khukuri exist in nepal then or did they bring it with them>need to ask a gurkha
TheSilatiger Gorkha was originally (INDO-ARYAN) kingdom chettri and thakuri used to reside there But as Nepal got united by gorkhali.All Nepali were called gorkhali.Because after sometime of unification of Nepal.......Nepal was called Gorkha desh aka Gokha Nation
nepal is made by different heritage people and not all nepali are from mongol heritage there are khas who were causain and came from central Asia and there are mongol looking people who were from Burma, China etc and people were in nepal from more than four thousand years ago read some history

I'm not too sure about all this in a real world application... Most people that would come at you with a knife are totally unpredictable and many most likely wont dont stop swinging because you cut them. It's like when you play some console fighting game versus your best mate for the 1000th time and play the same game vs your randomly button mashing girlfriend. She will kick your ass several times before you figure it out. In a knife fight you only get one chance and a 50/50 outcome wont do.
I think the level of skill and experience you need to engage in a knife fight with confidence is almost unattainable. Becuase you'd need to experience the real thing not just spar against someone. No my money is on the guy in the bush.

No, Sikhs have their own religion. They believe in a single creator, whom they call Waheguru, simply God, in other words. they believe in reincarnation with in some circles heaven and hell at the highest and lowest ends, but most think that by following God and living right you will just break free of the cycle. They also don't drink or use tobacco/drugs, many are vegetarian, never cut their hair or beards (the hair is kept in a topknot under the turban), and try to respect and tolerate others.
"shastra vidya" is a Sanskrit word which means knowledge of weopons. This is a Hindu martial art not sikh but Sikhism is come from Hinduism. Hindu rajput warriors taught this martial arts to the Sikh. this is north Indian martial but there are many forms of martial arts in indian. An south Indian martial art is believe to be mother of kung fun.

My friend. Hinduism is not a religion. It encompasses many religions like the jains ,the buddhists, the sikhs, the vaishnavs, the shaivs, the sanatani etc. They all have different ways and methods but one goal and that is enlightenment.
