I was floored when I saw this performance on Letterman. Compared to other "popular" performer's efforts it was as though Mozart had taken the stage. Also, I remember when I saw this tour live. I couldn't take my eyes off of Shandi. Her moves, her beauty... SHE'S A GODDESS!
I've ignored this guy the last 40 years and recently started watching him on here. Now I cant stop. I bought Hermit from mink hollow when it cameout. His talent is unbelievable. I'm sorry I missed all those great years
Nearly Human is a classic Todd album. It's stacked right from the top, with "For the Want of a Nail," this and "Parallel Lines," and includes other ballads you can't stay away from. Great elpee/disc. But this song really soars. Todd REALLY belts out the final verse and chorus here; great showing.
I saw this tour (Nearly Human), four times - twice in New Orleans, then the two shows that closed the tour in SF. I remember the night this was broadcast for the first time, too. I've since watched this video many, many times, and every time I do, all I can think about is how glorious they all looked and sounded. The shows were such incredibly soulful experiences, and left an indelible mark on me. Of course, w/ Vince Welnick longer w/ us, a proper reunion tour couldn't occur, but .. I can dream.
I loved this show!!! I have the VHS from when he was on Letterman. I also took my 7 year old son and a friend to see him LIVE at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby to see this concert (10th row on the floor) when Nearly Human was first released. Excellent show!!!
Definition of music - this! Amazing performance. Truly unbelievable by today's standards. Letterman's band must have been beside themselves to play with such talent. Sunboyfun hit the nail right on the head.
Todd is such a MASTER & GENIUS.Overlooked Ignored, and Misunderstood. Todd Rundgren needs our support RIGHT NOW More Than Ever! Absolutely amazing, Todd is in top form, the girls look gorgeous, great performance from the Late Show band too! I wish there was a similar live version of Fidelity too.
Dont like everything that Todd comes up with, but love him for never taking the safe and obvious route like so many others. This is a great song though. He can write stuff like this in his sleep probably!!
CZcams should show more before and after stuff in these vids. After the commercial when the band was waiting, Todd looks at the camera and says "Ladies and gentlemen, NOW we have a show"...referring to the lovely backup singers ;)
Amazing! Todd and company could have easily done a cookie-cutter tune for a live TV performance, and instead chose a song that is complex and ambitious. Great harmony and ensemble work. BTW, is Jenny Muldaur the daughter of Maria Muldaur (of "Midnight at the Oasis" fame?).
I agree.. he's just really into his part. But I can see how some might construe it as being annoying, though it's a stretch to read motivation into it.
Great clip, I'd never seen this. Kind of a a quintessential Todd track. he's without a doubt the best white soul guy ever from Philadelphia, among other things. On this one, he's got that trademarked melodic sense going on...great stu. Funny, I saw him on Daryl's House recently, and was struck by how similar Daryl and Todd are vocally... except for one thing. Todd's just way better, more soulful and interesting. Not to dis D, but if I wanted Liberace, I woulda gone to Vegas.

This is one of the best performances ever on Letterman's (or any other) show. Thanks for posting -- my old VHS of this is
falling apart!

Todd at his prime, not that he's bad now, this is just fantastic.

Another great song from Nearly Human. Rundgren is on top of his game here people.
TODD has great depth in his voice. He sounds better as he get older.
His voice is both comforting and animate at the same time.
Totally and with question at the top of his game here. And you gotta give it up for Paul and band, too, for bringing the feeling and emotion.

The blonde backup singer is Michele Gray, who is now married to Todd.
WHO sounds so good live. NOBODY.

Todd is God ... period.

NO DOUBT SHE IS !!!!!!!!!!!
If the powers that be that induct members to the Rock Hall of Fame would just watch a TR mix, he'd be a shoe-in.
I remember taping this. Has it really been that long ago? Does anyone have a copy of the interview with Dave that followed? Please post.
@Dwan52 its the same arround here , among a couple more of his masterpieces....
TR too much for words here
Is that the comic, Rich Hall on guitar!????
