    Thank you, Joe Behm, for supporting the people working in coffee, especially the women who are mostly made invisible in the global coffee culture. Helping people to feed their families, survive and (hopefully) smile is the most important thing you do. You make a great machine, but even better, you feed and care for families.

    Bought my Behmor roaster from Andy Freeman (Coffee Snobs) 8 years ago. Roast 400g twice a week and it's still going. It did need a new drum a while back but that was supplied quickly. I use the C button every time - as Joe said, it gives you a "bookmark:" for the time from the start of first crack. I picked up the tips for light roasts from this video and will be trying it out next week. Thanks for the video.

    Joe, when we bought our first Behmor 1600 plus from Roastmasters in January 2015, we got to speak with you at length about your ministry of donating your roasters around the world. What a wonderful impact you’ve had in the coffee market and the amazing outcome that we home roasters are afforded for buying the fair trade farmers’ beans. My roaster has been a workhorse but the number panel is acting up, so I just ordered the new 2000AB Plus today! So excited to continue our journey. From air popcorn popper, to your 1600 Plus, and now anxiously awaiting the new model. Thank you Joe! Hope to chat with you again one day!

    Early on, I "lost" several roasts that took a while to get all the way into first crack; even using the + button I couldn't get the timer to extend long enough to finish out first crack. It was incredibly frustrating! Only after I found the manual mode information and what "C" does, was I able to get reliable full roasts. I've roasted the way Mr. Behm advises here for years now and found he's absolutely spot on with this advice. Now with an additional 1600+, I've launched a successful coffee roasting startup and have been able to share delicious coffee with more people and make enough to reinvest in neat experimental extras, like barrel aging!

    You know, John Nanci, recommended the Behmor for my cacao beans in 2019 when I purchased it. Excellent interview. I'm on my second Behmor roaster - still with the original model, bought in 2014. I forgot that I can hit the 'C' button. Does that work with the original model? (The original model has no P5 manual mode). I usually use P1, sometimes P3 for a slower roast. If I had the newer model I would roast like Joe Behm suggests. Hit the C button....and listen for second cracks
    I do listen to the bean cracks for guidance always- though my machine is noisy. I usually go till I hear the beginning of second cracks for espresso, then hit cool, and about 20 seconds later open the roaster door.... I roast on the back porch, and let the remaining smoke go into the air. I roast 11-12 ounces at a time usually once a week. Only one coffee drinker in my household.
    The Behmor roaster is the most practical of the home roasters, from what I know, because one can roast more than 8 ounces at a time - also it's not too expensive...and it has a good amount of smoke suppression, though I prefer to use it outside on the back porch anyhow. I've read people say you won't save much money - but where I live high quality (fresh) specialty coffee's - with roast dates on the package now cost around $17 (12 oz.) - and I can buy green coffee for $5-8 per pound from Sweet Maria's, Happy Mug, or someone local. It saves me money.
    I do the dry roast once every 5 roasts as Joe suggests - but I'm way overdue to open that side panel and clean out the fan, etc.

    I am thinking about getting into coffee roasting and I am between this machine and the Gene Cafe. @@sandywoods992 You're welcome but I'd like to add that unless you have a good external exhaust fan you can't really roast indoors with either roaster. They produce to much smoke. I can't hear the first crack on mosts coffee roasts. I usually hit D when temp hits 300 degrees and P3 when I hear the beginning of the second crack and then go by bean color (which sometimes is hard to see on a Behmor).

    • @CoffeeRoasting
      @CoffeeRoasting  Před rokem +1

      In general, it's easier to hear with more dense coffees (higher grown). Other indicators for FC are: beans are extending massively, chaffs are being released in a high number, more smoke.

    When roasting a blend (more than one) do you "blend" the green beans before roasting, or after they have been individually roasted? I'm thinking AFTER they've been roasted, as each green bean has different first crack roasting times.

    • @CoffeeRoasting
      @CoffeeRoasting  Před 5 měsíci +1

      You can do both. For home roasters I recommend to blend afterwards to roast each coffee to the perfect point.
      Commercial roasteries are doing it differently, some do pre blend, some post blend. They have to take processes and efficiency into consideration as well.

    I have had a Behmor for 5 years, the heating element has started to go as the machine will not come to temp consistently. I like the Behmor, it has treated me well; I like a drum roast but am wondering if there is a better solution for brightness in the cup as I like more modern fruit forward roasts. My very large caveat is the safety feature...this is not a stress free roast; that feature makes me want to throw the machine off a cliff...literally. I mean no offense, it is just the worst and unnecessary...before the behmor I had a modded Ronco rotisserie acting as a drum roaster and there is no danger even at higher heats as no one thinks this is a set and forget process. The safety setting is a tragic design decision imhop because it is a very good home machine, the only manufacturer smart enough to allow for a larger batch roast at 1lb possible...not many home roasters do this unless you are willing to pay 1,000+. I guess like anything you take the good with the bad. On another note, indeed Joe is doing the Lord's work with the Behmor Inspired program; great generosity should be rewarded and that program alone makes me want and pray for Behmor's success. Well done!

    I used this ‘oven’ twice and I realize I wasn’t really impressed with the machine.
    First, the machine can never preheat up to 395F. It only goes up to 300F-308F. That’s it.
    Second, it’s a pain in the hand to put the drum in the preheated machine that will burn the hand easily. It is a struggle to put the drum in, and by the time it’s in. The oven has lost some of the preheat…
    Thirdly, I can never detect any audible first crack. As the matter of fact, I can only rely on my nose and vision to smell the burning and steam or smoke coming from the machine. Then decided it’s time to press the C button and press P2, P3, P4 or P5! Then the cooling button.
    Lastly, I can’t never seen able to roast the beans pass to medium dark brown. It always turns out to light medium brown. In other words “Light roast”.
    I’m currently working and learning on how to operate the commercial coffee roaster. It can goes up to 395F-430F or more without a problem.
    But if you want to roast a little bit darker, you either 0:05 prolong the roasting time with less powerful heat or roast it in full power with shorter time. But time runs out, it is still not dark enough!
    It’s not easily to manipulate the color palette I want from these beans in the machine!
    The worst part was the beans are roasted inconsistently due to its lack of horsepower…
