  • Field recording test using ZOOM H6 with included MSH-6 mid-side microphone capsule and wind guard. Recording of a back garden in North Wales on a warm, sunny spring morning with fish pond in the background and bees buzzing around the mic set up near a fern bush. Mic picking up distant traffic on A548 about 1/4 mile away. Also, some slight wind noise leaking in through the bottom of the wind guard where the mic is slightly exposed.
Recorded in Wav 96KHz/24 bit using RAW side level and stereo widened in Logic Pro X.
I hope this helps anyone thinking of purchasing a pcm recorder. I think it's a great piece of kit and highly recommended for field recording, interviews and podcasts. If you'd like to hear more sound recording tests on the ZOOM H6 please get in touch: mikepowellphotography.co.uk

Hi. I'd like to do something similar while riding my bicycle. The idea is to place the Zoom on my back, to lessen the wind noises and eliminate my breathing noises. I'm worried mostly about "handling" noises. I've read that any little hand contact with this thing produce loud noises. No matter how I fix it on my back, that would cause similar noises, I guess. What do you think, could this work? Also I don't know the direction of the figure 8 mic inside the capsule. Would I need to rotate the whole thing 90 degrees? Or can I just lay it on my back?

As long as the mic head is not touching anything then you shouldn’t get any noise. The sponge mic cover also works well in masking wind noise. It’s a great mic.

Hello, I am looking for a recorder like the zoom H5 because of its size to record nature sounds, I think it gives me more possibilities than the zoom h4npro because of the different accessories. To record sounds of abes and nature, do you think the Zoom SSH-6 or the Zoom MSH-6 is better? Thank you

Hi, I've not tried the H5, but I'm sure for nature sounds it will be difficult to hear any real differences. Ultimately it's the capsule, like professional lenses on a camera, that will make the difference. The SSH-6 capsule is directional, which helps you focus in on an individual audio source and helps to reduce ambient background noises. Probably more suited to interviews or where you have to focus on one particular sound. The MSH-6 is a mono-compatible stereo capsule that can actually be adjusted after recording in a sound editing suite like Logic. It's perfect for field recording, including bees, nature etc. I hope that helps!
