Hi , good point in the hardshell jackets in cold weather. my winter rides are often very windy. I have found my favorite jacket is Loki softshell It has a built-in neck gaiter, which sits away from your face and doesn’t freeze up on you it also has a hood that will fit over my helmet and mittens if you need them.

One annoyance I found is that most facemasks will ice up and start restricting your breathing relatively quickly. I like the Seirus balaclavas. The mouth holes and nose cutout make breathing easier and prevent my goggles from fogging. Other than my hands and feet, I've been surprised just how little I need to wear to stay warm even in subzero temps. That first mile or so while you warm up can be pretty miserable though!
