This is my favorite Brian DePalma movie. The end credit theme, The Hell Of It , is one of the most scathingly venomous songs ever. The line "If I could live my life half as worthlessly as you, I'm convinced that I'd wind up burning too" is one of the coldest things I have ever heard in my life.
I love the soundtrack. It's the best movie soundtrack I know ! It's incredible. I have shivers when I listen to some. It seems like every song is made to make you feel. I can be totally depressed or totally happy while listening to it, depending of the songs. That's why it's gold for me.

I remember we've watched ''Phantom of the Paradise'' on 2020 year, during pandemic's peak by livestream and since then, we used to joke and sing it a lot each other, but now.. this song hits me so hard, especially ''Old Souls last forever''. Oh my Steve... If only you knew how much I still miss you two years later. We had plans to meet each other and hang out together to a someday that never came. I couldn't even tell you that now I'm graduated and I was starting my own career and share all plans I have to be with you. For the whole 4 years, I've always dreamed to meet you and hug, give you a lot of kisses and then, hang out around and share smiles and genuine laughs and fun. My dad was a big fan of Paul Williams, he introduced me and my siblings to this movie and we are huge fans of it. Whenever I hear, "All souls last forever, so we may never fear goodbye." I think of my dad. Love you dad, miss you everyday.
Paul Williams wrote this song in anticipation of the death of his mother. It's understandable that you would find the same connection with the lyrics. Sorry for your loss.
My Dad took us out to see "Earthquake" but it was sold out and we couldn't get in so we took a walk down a few blocks and went to see "Phantom Of The Paradise". Bummed out that "this" should be the back-up plan. Loved it then and love it now.
if you remember Earthquake was in what they called *sensorsound* (extra speakers in the theater that was supposed to simulate an Earthquake..)Paradise was a much better movie though..only the well rounded and brighter people seemed to get it though..it's an absolute treasure the movie

Paul Williams is an absolute genius for writing this soundtrack..it was nominated for an academy award but lost out and Paul was robbed..He later did win a Grammy and an academy award but this stuff on Phantom is brilliant stuff
I saw it the same time and situation, went and ordered the LP. I got the novelization at a tag sale years after. Due a remake, but they would PC the cast ala Ghostbusters 2016 and wonder why it failed .

Mid-70s grade B drive-in movie...I loved this flick. It usually ran as a double feature with a grindhouse film like Foxy Brown or Race with the Devil. This is all foreign language to these youngsters. Remember those cardboard-tasting pizzas from the consession stand? Sneaking in extra people in the trunk. Laying on the hood with your old lady and a cold one while your friend and his girlfriend were getting busy in the back seat. Those were good times.

When this song is played in the background when Winslow sees Phoenix making out with Swan, it made the scene all the more heartbreaking. I was like, "WTF Phoenix, why?! How could you betray Winslow like that?"
In her defense, she didn’t recognize Winslow with the dark makeup and voice box when he tried to warn her, not to mention they had only met once before then, maybe a bit over a month before. It’s only because of his makeup magically disappearing at the end of the movie she even recognizes him at all!
was fortunate enough to see this film in theatres and drive ins when it first came out & it is one of my favorites of all time...this song is magical, and the film far underated. paul williams is too, the entire soundtrack is pretty amazing.
Out of all the songs, this is my absolute favourite. The emotion conveyed here are strong and the singing perfectly reflects the dark and tragic side of this musical.

My second favorite film if not favorite. I purchased a dvd copy recently. Had to settle for it in french but luckily i could turn off the subtitles. A lush and Infectious soundtrack also. Truly must be seen to be believed.

In case anyone cares, the Phantom of the Paradise is about a man who loves a woman; but, is kept from her and gives his life to protect her. True love. Old Souls is based on Goethe's "Faust". Faust ends with the love of Faust's life dying and Devil trying to get her and God saving her by taking her to heaven, leaving Faust alone. It is the story of the meaning of life and love and the reality of loving someone at first meeting without ever being able to fully exchange that love because of being immediately separated.
