THAT is Bullsh*t. The APU is 6 years old and never was meant to compete against gaming machines. It was a really nice solution for HTPC or office PCs back then, outperforming the Intel/HDGraphics combination with its Bulldozer(?) cores and Integrated Radeon by a whole lot.

This board was my old computer a loog time ago. It was really reliable, I took it to friends places alll the time each weekend. It was not amazing, but with a "ok" graphics card it was fun to play a couple of older titles, and as an emulation machine it was fire. I kinda love that old thing.

The cheapest motherboard on the platform you want should be good enough if you're not overclocking.
Unless you're going for looks or something.
Nope, just look out for the CPU support and features (overclocking, M.2, etc.) you need, but among boards that supply those buying the cheapest is generally not a problem. Although Linus didn't test it, but I'd bet this -POS- board performs identically when compared to anything else with FM1 and this CPU.

My general advice for buying motherboards: find out what motherboard chipset you want, what socket you want, what I/O you want, and what form factor you want, then get the cheapest one that fits those parameters. Aesthetics is really the only reason to vary from this formula because all that matters in a motherboard is the chipset and the list of things you can connect to it.

I think since he was using a stock heatsink, and fan it came with preapplied thermal paste which in this case was good enough, but I could be wrong.

it's 2018 and I still use a6-5400k and an A55 board by gigabyte with 4gb of ram with a 768p monitor and a 500 watt psu with mustard and ketchup cable.

I didn't realize how small mini ITX motherboards were, did my first small form factor build for my wife, and was genuinely shocked by how small that motherboard was. I just realized why I thought they were bigger. I'd only ever seen them in your videos, and your hands make it look like its pretty similar to an EATX

I upgraded from a GT 430 (no rgb) to a RX 570 (has rgb) and over tripled framerates which proves rgb makes a difference

And I liked the video, laughed, and got the point about it. Come on guys, you're acting like you really needed to know if a 30$ motherboard is a good option for gaming.
Although I find Linus's insistence on reviewing absurd products somewhat disappointing, I certainly would appreciate it if he would review some reasonably cheap products since the highest volume motherboards/GPUs/etc. at the low end are rarely reviewed by big-name tech journalists.
Would you even trust their reviews though? Luke is likely the only guy in the whole studio who sorta kinda understands computers besides Linus, and even he doesn't quite have the methodical meticulousness to pull off a good benchmark or to notice some significant pitfalls, and he's better at it than Linus. The rest of them can't even assemble a computer from a bag of parts. I think it's a lost cause. Take it for what it is, computer-centric entertainment.

You're right on. These products are a joke and a waste of time. They focus on the extreme ends of the scale which both represent a poor value, which only tells us not to buy extremely cheap or expensive products. It would be preferable if they compared mid-range hardware that 90% of their viewers are going to buy.
The 3870 was the heart of my backup rig for a few years. definitely not good but was always playable at lower settings. I know I am looking back with rose colored glasses but one of these got me through quite a few part ordering wait times for my main rig off and on. I still have it around here somewhere. Will probably turn the thing into a dirt cheap retropie arcade machine out of pallet wood one of these days. Throw an old ssd and some old video card in like the 750ti I have laying around and its at least gonna be better than a raspberry pi would be at emulation. Hell I think even its integrated gpu could give the pi3b+ a run for its money, it can barely run raspbian and load a youtube video, now I haven't gotten a pi4 yet but I can't imagine it's much better, even with the hype, I digress. Thanks for covering a POS chip and board that got me through many wait times for i7 parts. Had I started watching your channel years ago instead of just tinkering and being reckless I may have saved myself some of that pain, but that's half the fun right? lol kinda late to the party but I love the channel. keep it up guys.
Yeh well technically RGB CAN affect performance, lightstrips can deliver some heat so the pc is getting hotter and the strips too and then it's as hit as the sun and boom.

I have one of those, i play bf3 and bf4 at 60 fps. Idk why he ridiculizes so much this hardware as it is not meant to play triple AAA games or to run with a fucking 1080ti. It is a mobo for basic things or light gaming..... simple as that and it is pretty cheap.

It is backwards compatible with a lot of stuff though. If you have an old monitor and printer that thing could support them.
Is the video about motherboard or CPU? You got a $30 mobo and showed graphs comparing Kaby Lake to a 2011 AMD CPU. What?? The conclusion was as vague as the methodology. Suggestion: get a Kaby Lake Core i5 or i7, find the cheapest mobo possible that will run that, and compare performance to a "balls-to-the-walls" motherboard. Keep the apples-to-apples comparison!

There are $49 kabylake supporting mobos and comparing using then would have been not vague. LTT is comparing a top class cpu on a top class mobo ( i suppose) against a budget cpu on the cheapest mobo, at the very least he could have used either a current gen cheapest cpu like the pentium series or on a cheap mobo . The way LTT has put this video is simply telling budget buyers to go f""k theirselves .
I appreciate the idea behind testing the cheapest mobo possible, but a viable modern budget solution at the end would have been nice. Bonus points for least expensive modern Intel AND AMD boards.
Agreed, the only takeaway from this video is that an old AMD APU cannot compete with a kaby lake processor. Any information about what difference any motherboard could possibly have made is nonexistent, which is pretty dumb for a video titled to be about motherboards.
I think you might be missing the point a little. I saw this video as a comparison between the old mobo with the best processor it can run and the current architecture. They did use the same graphics card and (assuming) the same hardrive. It super bottlenecked the graphics card and showed what a big difference 3mb and 6mb sata can make. It was showing you what you would get if you bought that POS and benching it against current builds, again, for comparison
