All these old heads making fun of younger generation for having boundaries and trying to have healthy balance and not burn out are infuriating.
Especially *news anchors* like sorry that your idea of hard work is talking in front of a teleprompter all day… a lot of us deal with jobs with unrealistic expectations, little to no resources, little to no support… of course we are gonna be burned out.
Shout out to the social media manager for this channel, I know that YOU understand what I mean

In a time when pay continues to fall behind inflation. Ever since the 80's, pay vs cost of living has diverged at a continuous rate. This adds to the stress levels, a Bachelors in Computer Science can't land you a job to make you enough money to "thrive", and just "survive" paycheck to paycheck. Now I'm working on my masters in data science (aka AI), but unlike boomers, who could go to college for nothing, my 1 year masters will put me another 100k in the hole. Thankfully, the pay is great in machine learning, so I'll be fine in a few years. But this is what we have to go through to "make it" today, vs my aunt who walked out of high school into the IRS (no college degree), and owns 2 homes that are now worth over 2 million and had 3 kids, driving luxury cars her whole life. Then they want to say we are lazy? I spend 60 to 80 hours a week on school, and will continue that the rest of my life in tech, just to "thrive". Given this is how absurd it's become, I don't blame gen-z for "giving up". Affordability vs pay is horrible today compared to what it was like for boomers, and boomers are incapable of putting themselves into our shoes. If your a boomer, ask yourself, could you make enough to afford your home at market rate today? Studies have looked at this and determined, the vast majority of boomers would not. $120k per year middle America suburbs, or $260k to $360k on the west cost depending on where you live, buys you a starter home. Here in San Francisco, you have to be in the top 3% of income earners in the country to qualify for a bank loan for a house.

The best workers in my workplace don't apply for promotions because it just amounts to more work for hardly any more $$$$. Add in the consideration that most of us don't have families or children and why would we bother?

Stop the AI boosterism language. AI is a mirage - that hiring managers are saying it's an "essential" skill" just shows how little they understand AI. Currently it's a gussied up search engine that steals language, images, etc. to create a subpar product. The only AI stories that need to be covered are 1) the environmental costs of AI, 2) the people who are or are going to lose jobs due to AI - and cover it correctly - computers will do a worse job and put people out of work while consolidating more power and money in the hands of the rich, 3) the over-valuation of companies that, again, creates wealth for the executives and investors but is a dangerous bubble.

I think you should understand how AI works. It's really just matrices of multi variant maximum likelihood estimators using multi variant probability density functions. Yes, it's a lot of math, but it's all just probability, and with the latest LLMs, the accuracy is actually very good. Yes, they make mistakes. Yes, you need to double check things sometimes. Yes, it can be a search engine, but it's a lot more than that. LLMs are being used to derive data and insights that would be too expensive or impossible (need to track down humans no longer in the company). They are being used to identify and solve all manners of business problems. This isn't a "fad", it's a new application using advanced stats, linear algebra, discrete math, and calculus, all of which is possible thanks to hardware developments. Yes, there's ethical problems (that's a class I will take in the spring). But humans NEED to step away from this "burn everyone into the ground to survive" lifestyle, and AI wil provide this. It's how we as a society reshape it adapt financially to address this paradigm shift.

Keep in mind the only reason companies are making this a thing is either 1, they don't know what it is or what to do with it, but it's the latest buzzword and they don't want to be left out or 2, they have a stake in feeding their AI systems data, so that's why they want people to buy into it. I would guess most people in the world don't know what it is or even care to use it even if they did. It has great potentional and likelihood of being misused by those in control of it. Remember, most companies, whether they're selling you a product or service or one you work normally in business because they're actually concerned about your wellbeing or your livelihood. They are there to make money. If your government can't and won't hold them accountable or regulate this sensibly, you should probably stay away from it both as an employee and as a consumer. Your money speaks.

I'm an older retired person and happy to be out of the workforce.
AI is going to replace jobs currently held by people and make the people who are working in fields that use AI an extension of the AI.
    Brave New World, indeed!

I'm curious. How many people work for companies that have "burn out" coaches and gap years and other things this guy is talking about? How many feel like their company cares about them getting burned out? Raise your hand.

Think about this. If workers are stupid enough to tell people it's taking them less time to do that which it took them before because "AI is so good," why should a company keep that person around once the AI is able to do everything the worker did before? It doesn't sleep, eat or need benefits or pay. Don't be stupid. This guy is telling you it's a good tool, but what he's really saying is "it's good for you as employees to make this tool better." Once it is, there's no reason to keep you around.

Burnout isn’t new. We had a pandemic burnout when we were all trying to hang on to our jobs. I do feel like at my org there are a lot of people that take time off at the drop of a pin, even at our busiest moments, leaving the rest of us to scramble. And yes, I don’t know what’s going on in their lives, but we know our busy times-you can plan for it. It used to be mandated you don’t take time off during certain months, but with new management no time is off-limits, so we’re always having to cover. Now THAT’S causing burnout for the rest of us.

With an increase in technology, comes an increase in the amount of work you are expected to do. Add in the fact that wages have never kept up with costs of living, which makes living that much more stressful and difficult. Personal time is not a thing anymore. Yes, unlimited PTO, but if you go on vacation, you still MUST get the work done, and it will be used against you in terms of promotions to boot. So most people just don't take vacations. 7 am to 9 pm, 7 days a week, of complex math problems and machine learning development is my life right now.
