1963 Phil Bonner Ford Galaxie 427 Lightweight: Muscle Car Of The Week Episode 261 V8TV
This 1963 Ford Galaxie was built for racing, with lightweight fiberglass and aluminum components and a high-strung 427 for power. It was campaigned by Phil Bonner in the ‘63 NHRA Super Stock class, and is is basically the same today as it was in racing trim back in the day. Good for low 12’s in the quarter mile, these cars paved the way for the F/X and Funny Car classes in the heyday of 1960s drag racing and is one of several 1963 Galaxie lightweights in The Brothers Collection. Except the Japanese stuff can start looking really weird. I don't understand where their stylists' heads are at. Taillights that look like a cat's eyes and offset vertical pillars where one pillar is missing. Not necessarily butt ugly, but just plain weird stuff.

What a fantastic machine. The factory lightweights are some of the greatest automotive endeavours ever thought up. No frills, no high tech. I don’t care how fast a new Demon goes, you can’t touch the sound of these cars and the way they shake the ground. Brutal!

I saw a mid 60s Dart lightweight with the 426 Hemi in my hometown. Another factory built drag car and the team showing it said very successful. Those were the days. I wasn't a "brand" guy. I saw each of the big three dominate at different times. And the competition meant new and improved technology for all. I guess the biggest story of that era was the GT40s domination at LeMans, and that gave Ford bragging rights hard to combat. But the Hemi's success at the drag strip was unmatched for a while and GM had some pretty impressive numbers of their own. Then the 70s hit. Pollution control, safety regulations, the wimping of the auto industry. From a Boss 302 to a Mustang II? Oh my lord. Many years elapsed before cars became fun again.

I love the dawn of the performance BB. Chevy and Ford both introduced 427's, Pontiac unleashed the SD 421 and the mighty 426 wedge and later Hemi. The all sported big bores and fairly short short stroke and could rev. The availability of pump 100 octane fuel allowed manufactures to use some insane compression ratio for the time and it's set the ground work for some really awesome small blocks.

The top oiler never had any problems that I ever heard of, beyond rumor. It did not "starve" the bottom end, but on start-up the oil pressure will rise from top to bottom. Once pressure is established, it is the same throughout the system. The welded-on oil channel that created the side-oiler was an improvement by Ford to allay the concerns of people about the top oiler. But there are no occurrences documented that I know of (if anybody has some please reply it would be cool to see!) to show that the top oiler ever had bottom end oiling problems. Having said that...I think we can all agree the side oiler destroyed all of the NASCAR competition in the 60's. For several years the only brand on the track was Ford powered. Chrysler and GM abandoned NASCAR completely for several years because they could not compete with the 427 powered Fords. Quite an accomplishment, given that the FE big block is actually a bit smaller (length) than the GM and Chrysler alternatives.

I grew up during this period and still don't understand how this motor doesn't get the same respect as the 426 hemi. I knew 3 people who had hemis and they all said the same thing. You can't keep the hemi tuned for any amount of time. They were glad to unload them because as they said I want a car I can drive without having to work on it every month. I know all high performance motors have higher maintenance requirements but it seems that there were plenty of motors, including the 440, that could run with the hemi without all the headaches and expense. Even the infamous superbirds and charger 500s that dominated Nascar didn't do it because of the hemi, they were faster because of the aero and wing package. Hemis didn't dominate like that before or after that.
