  • Smart ForTwo 451 New Rear Brake Pipes AND Have We Fixed The Pedal Travel Problem?
    I bought ANOTHER Smart Car ... this time a 2011 Smart ForTwo Night Orange edition. One of only 235 ever made!
    Why? Well because my Smart 450 is getting on in its life and the colour ... well I just fell in love with it.
    In this video Dad and I find a leaky rear brake pipe and so fabricate some more - we also bleed the brakes and hopefully find and fix the illusive brake pedal travel issue WITHOUT having to bleed the ABS system.

    Used a few different flaring tools over the years but bought one of these about 4 years ago and it's been very good especially using it on a vehicle bit hard work on steel pipes but does the job.

    I've just had to make a new flare on a rear brake pipe on my 2004 E46, using an almost identical hand tool to yours. The BMW uses DIN flares though, not SAE, when joining the hard pipes into the flexible hoses. I'm surprised that Smart use the SAE ones. Were the existing union nuts definitely SAE ones, with a slightly concave shoulder? The DIN union nuts have a flat shoulder that screws up against a flat base of the flare. Good work on the video! Hope the new pipes will give you many years of good service :)

    I’ve done brake pipes myself in the past, borrowed a tool
    Easy job, as long as you don’t forget to put the fittings on before flaring!

    I reckon maybe just jacking the car up just a bit higher allowed the “trapped wind” to find its way out of the pipes…. many motorbike rear brakes are very tricky to do, sometimes you have to unbolt the cylinders and wave them around a bit….

    • @JonCoupland
      @JonCoupland  Před 3 měsíci

      Yes that's entirely a possibility!

    I bought a couple rolls of the copper brake pipe from my local motor factors. It's copper and Zinc. Mix Quenfer I believed it is called. I hate the smell of break fluid. That was the way I was taught with a bit of string. 😂 What normally happens is you make a great flare and forget to put the end on it 😂. Good brake tool around £35 i believe i have a couple of them. One here and one at my brother's. I taught my brother because he was getting burst pipes he lives on the west coast of Scotland i live on east next too the sea. 😂. I hope your learning Jon 😂. I think poor Mr HubNut good do with your Dad for a fortnight 😂😂. Think the brake pedal will be better the fluid looked a bit yuck. I did my freinds Audi TT for him with VCDS. Just to cycle the Abs pump. Great work 👍

    • @JonCoupland
      @JonCoupland  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Thanks for watching. Ive got a terrible sense of smell (so has Dad) so the fluid isnt an issue to me! Good tip about remembering to put the end on! Rookie mistakes can happen there. I've been following Ian's progress (or lack of sadly) with his Smart 450 - Dad could do with a motorbike busmans holiday to Wales! I can confirm the pedal issue is now seemingly fixed (but now the pedal is squeaking!) J

    I bought the same tool, made a couple of practice pipes. Not sure about the difference between single and double flares... I also got a pipe bender as I would probably kink the pipe 🙄
    I like the re using nuts and milk bottle. I have a sauce bottle for when I will bleed the brakes 😊

    • @ferrumignis
      @ferrumignis Před 3 měsíci +2

      A single flare is what is shown at 17:19, the end of the pipe flares out then then back in. To create a double flare you first form a single flare, and then perform another operation to push the end of the pipe in with a conical tool creating a cone shaped flare but with the pipe folded back in on itself creating double the thickness.

    • @ferrumignis
      @ferrumignis Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@terryatkinson3182 You know by looking at the end of the original pipe that you are copying, or failing that look at the component that the pipe is fitted to. If it's designed for a double flare the threaded hole will have a convex seat at the bottom (i.e. the seating area that the pipe mates to sticks out). Something designed for a single flare has a concave seat.

    I must have replaced 100 feet or more of brake pipes air bubbles get trapped in abs pumps and they difficult to get out they need the system cycled either by software or if you know what your doing you can put power to the abs module

    • @ferrumignis
      @ferrumignis Před 3 měsíci +2

      The only way I found worked on a 450 Smart without the scan tool to open the ABS valves is to hook up an easybleed and then perform a conventional manual bleed procedure whilst the easybleed is hooked up. Neither work on their own, but together they do.
