Went to Slab City once. Drove down on my bike from L.A. on a day ride to there and the Salton Sea. Everything around that place feels like death. I knew as soon as I got there that I'd never go back again and honestly asked myself what the fuck I was even doing there in the first place. The whole state is just blehhhh! Everyone says California is beautiful, but it's really not. The cities suck, the desert really sucks, and the few places that are actually geographically appealing are filled with assholes. It has some nice beaches but even most of them are too crowded. Did Cali for almost a decade and I used to miss it occasionally, but I don't miss it at all anymore. And seeing these videos make me so glad I'm no where near it anymore.

Not safe is an understatement. Believe me when I tell you that a lot of these people are chameleons that change their colors to make unsuspecting tourists more comfortable. They mimic kind and sane behavior. There is nothing sane about living in a landfill in the middle of the 130 degree desert. Going out there to party and maybe do a psychedelic and watch the sunset is perfectly fine, but actually scraping trash together to live under isn't sane.
There are so many other places in the U.S. you can do this. Places with creeks and lush forests. The Manson family lived exactly like this and you see what came from that. At first it's love, peace and happiness. After a few weird LSD experiences things start getting a little darker each time until you find yourself being asked to go kill and rob people.

Not one person shouldn't be without a place to lay there head. Shelters are a joke and not enough room. I’ve long been fascinated by videos of Slab City and part of the fascination is how creeped out I’ve been by some of the residents there who when they tell you that indeed there are vigilantes there who burn people out they find undesirable it’s wise to take them at their word. Anyone in his right mind who wants to go off grid can find land out in the desert where the authorities won’t care if you want to live in a small quonset hut or what not. You just need to be sure that whatever state you buy the land in is not hostile to off grid homesteads with alternative sanitation arrangements such as composting toilets or making absurd demands about electrification, water wells, septic tanks, or building codes. In other words stay the hell away from Colorado in particular.
An interesting book on this topic is RANCHO COSTA NADA The Dirt Cheap Desert Homestead by Phil Garlington. And in particular, don’t ever buy parcels of cheap land in Costilla County, Colorado. They used to tolerate outhouses with 400 gallon pump out tanks but then stopped grandfathering such homesteads in and started harassing people using armed building inspectors who drive around fining people for not having septic systems even though the water table there is FUBAR and not conducive to running a regular septic system. They also want everyone electrified even though most of the roads in the county lack power lines suspended from utility poles. I got rid of my 5.5 acre parcel by donating it to the Catholic homeless shelter in Alamosa as I finally realized to not bother with it anymore. Something in Arizona on the shores of Lake Mead would be a far better investment.

I have seen people taking water from the canal, running it through a bit of cloth and claiming it was fit to drink.....right, run off from all the cattle grazing areas and from the poop covered land along the canal.....full of insecticides, poop and heavens knows what else. Just to breathe the air with the dust blown up from the ground is toxic. Add the crime (like the pedophile filled Goonies Camp, the rapes, murders, robberies, the arson, and the meth heads) and why would anyone with one brain cell left ever go there? The meth heads will kill you for a darn nickel. There were some people that wanted to be "left alone" or to "live free" or to "live cheaply" for a long time, but, once the criminals moved in, it just became a dangerous, insane wasteland.

FYI ...those burnt out buildings near Maes Store and that building you're in down in Niland were torched by a crazy meth addict that loved to hang out at the Slabs ...

I don't suggest anyone going there unless you have to...or you're the type of person who thinks arson and crime is acceptable ...

TheMobileHomestead wow... thank you for your comment and telling some of your story. I think my videos are honest and open. I think 90% of Americans should never even visit. Most people are not like me and you. Most people could not handle that place.

    • @TheMobileHomestead
      @TheMobileHomestead Před 6 lety +14

Actually I do think you are an honest and introspective person .... very few people out there hearing about the crime and arson problem at the Slabs would be intelligent enough to ask the Niland Fire Dept. to speak of this...
So I appreciate you for this ...
Although you were wrong about Gnomes Video...woman get beaten and Raped quite frequently at the Slabs ...if you had asked the fire dept about how many times they've sent ambulances up to the Slabs to transport the bloody bodies of women and girls that their boyfriends beat up and then passed her around for the scum to have sex with you would have heard many horror stories... that and much more is why the fire dept wants that hellhole shut down.
Even so... your Title on this Video ...What They Don’t Want You To Know ..is a perfect summation of what the Slabs is actually all about ....
The Slabs simply survives because of the ignorance of the people who visit there ...they rely on the Rubes to be impressed and wowed by the NOT Particularly Unique things they do ,and do their best to sweep under the carpet the real slab city story....
So if a person is Young or Old and dumb ..without a single clue about what goes on in their own country ..they're going to be super impressed by the Slabs Library , The Internet Cafe , The Range and a few other places there.... what these dummies don't know and Slab Hustlers who rely on donations from the perpetually uniformed don't want them to know is ..
1...There is Nothing Particularly Unique ,Cool and Edgy about running internet and sharing with others off of Solar power...LONG before anyone got internet at The Slabs ..Rvers have been running Solar Internet and sharing it with their friends all over the country...
2...There is Nothing Particularly Unique, Cool and Edgy about having an outdoor library ..hippy communes have been doing this since the 60's and the new Intentional Communities all do this right now ...
3...There is Nothing Particularly Unique ,Cool and Edgy about having a place where people get together and make music ...people have been doing this all across our country since the early 40's..
4...There is Nothing Particularly Unique ,Cool and Edgy about East Jesus Art Commune ... you see that same thing all through LA ,San Diego , Venice Beach , Mount Shasta ,Portland Oregon ,Seattle and a shitload of other places....
Unfortunately most people who visit the Slabs are not really travelers who have been anywhere ..so they don't know about this stuff .... so it's really easy to hustle them into believing that the place is one big Artistic Anarchist Paradise... so they don't see the massive piles of garage everywhere , they don't want to believe the unbelievably high rate of crime and arson there ... IE the Slabbers have them right where they want them..
This is when they pounce .... can you get me a beer , give me a ride ...hey baby want to check out our cool party hut...

You were there for a measly week and don't have enough time or experience there to know how to tell a questionable story from a real one...
I was there for 2 straight Years on foot ,no vehicle and out of necessity got to know at least 85 percent of the people living there.
During those 2 miserable years ...22 camps and RV's were torched by people at The Slabs ...3 meth labs went up in flames also
5 people were found dead ...2 from natural causes ...1 was a guy beaten so severely at the Range he was dying from head injury's but didn't know that , wandered down to the hot springs and died in the springs.
the last 2 were murders which the cops never found the perps...
I was there when 6 SUVS full of Federal Marshals came to the Slabs to arrest a guy who everyone thought just went AWOL from the Air Force ..turns out he came to hide out at the Slabs because when he ran the day-care center on his base he was sexually abusing the kids.
I was there when the swat team came to arrest a meth Addict guy and his girlfriend who had pulled a gun on an imperial county road worker...
I was there when the girl who runs the Library ,Cornelius was taken away by the sheriffs dept for pulling a gun on someone she was afraid of...
I was there when 3 road girls didn't like what some other girl said ..so they lured her to an out of the way spot ..held her down and sliced her stomach open ,then for added shitz and giggles pulled her insides out.
I was there when two guys sliced each other up with a machete and needed to be air-lifted to the hospital.
I was there when some guy choked his wife so badly her eyes popped out of her head ..he hurt her so badly she will always be brain-dead .
I was there when some guy drugged a girl there and then pulled out a gun and forced another guy to fuk her.
I was there when 2 sick-minded Meth Addicted Families had their Children Taken away for horrific abuses.
I was there when some kids in a car went down the 'Wrong Road'..they got stopped by a gang of crazy people who threatened to beat them to pulp if the guys girlfriend didn't have sex with them...which out of terror she did...but they still beat the boyfriend to a bloody pulp.
I was there when a woman got attacked by vicious dogs and died from it.
I lived there and got to know a lot of other things that went on in that dump ..so when someone says that they drove a couple to the hospital after a rape .. I have NO REASON to not believe them because the same thing has happened many times at the Slabs...
So do me a favor Stay Honest ..but stay out of judging something you don't know anything about.

Was hoping to see the bad things you spoke about? , what exactly gave you the bad vibe? What things did you see that you didn’t like that you didn’t show? Really curious, I live in upstate N.Y. In the beautiful Catskill mountains. Have been watching different videos about slab city, grabbed my interest because it reminds me Kinda if Woodstock ny with the kind of art displayed everywhere and the free spirited people they have disconnected from society. Usually in these places there is a bad element, mental illness, drugs, a loss of self, no care for personal hygiene or health. But mixed in some people who want to carve out a peaceful existence away from the world and not be bothered by anyone or anything and these places always attract a type of people looking to go someplace to let loose and do whatever they want and get fucked up, trashed and fuck with others and ruin someone’s good time and be obnoxious. People should start realizing that life is what you make it no matter where you are, you don’t have to escape to some wasteland in the dessert that the most of society doesn’t care about . I’ve sometimes considered escaping to a place like that when life gets unbearable, when the world you live in just isn’t enough and you feel there isn’t anything here for me. I call this the grass is greener syndrome. Everyone always thinks someplace else is better, people in other places are better, different. I be realized that no matter where you go, whatever reasons you are escaping, those reasons follow you and you will find the same people you wished to escape from the same scenarios will fallow you no matter where you go. You have to change from within and find the core issues from which you are running from. Once you find inner peace it will be with you wherever you are and it will attract the life you are looking for. We make our own way in this world and we make our own happiness it can’t be found in a particular place. I’m curious why you went and what you saw. Would love to hear your experience and others. Thanks for sharing and look forward to hearing from you.

Nothing bad happens where there are no laws or rules, right? Yeah right! Common sense folks, lots of people with shady past living together with no laws and rules, of course, there are going to be shit that goes down. They are there to escape the law and do what ever they want. If you're there you should always be looking over shoulder.

except police are a drain on society and there is thousands upon thousands of hours of video evidence to back up my claim. if you shoot a home invader under current system they can sue you for damages even though they broke into your house. In a truly free society you just shoot him in the head and drag him out and the problem is solved. cops and laws just bring a whole slew of bullshit. Don't steal, rape, murder, or break into soneone property/trespass and we would have a safe society. If you break these rules you forfeit your life it's that simple. No court dates and missing work or law suits just good old fashion justice.

    • @desertweasel6965
      @desertweasel6965 Před 2 lety

That " lawless" shit is exactly that, bullshit. In fact, the more it is openly and obnoxiously broadcasted the more the police will show you how lawless it is. They say it's lawless, because there is no police department and police are 30 minutes away. The sheriffs drive through this place everyday. The laws of the U.S. applies to this dumpster in the desert as well.
Now, it is true that there isn't a huge police presence. You can openly drink, snort coke on the bar, take acid and run around naked for the most part, but if someone calls the cops you will be handled just like anyone else. You can also imagine there are MULTIPLE informants that benefits from turning others in. I mean, anyone can throw on a tye dye shirt and sandals and ask around for some meth or LSD. They could even live there and just pass on information to the police. The police will also give these informants pictures of wanted child predators and other fugitives. Once they spot anyone that has a warrant or is wanted, they simply make a phone call. Otherwise, how would the cops even know the fugitives are there?

This is the best place for these folks. If you generate enough negative publicity, there are people in The State who, because of who and what they are, simply cannot leave others alone. Those people WILL destroy the lives of the residents whose discourse and living differs from their own. Regulate, commercialize, or close down The Slabs? Where do you expect them to go? With any luck, they would cut a hole in the walls around your gated communities and compounds, lean some pallets up under your bedroom windows, and become YOUR neighbors. Those who cannot stand to leave their neighbors unmolested deserve to be driven out of their enclaves in San Francisco and Bel Aire.
But ... these people are the powerless. Leave them alone.
