    Very nice! I actually also recently build a Rotella, but I bent 2 rows of wooden planks over a mold and glued them together to stay in form.

    I used the polycarbonate, coated it with a 10mm Eva foam, it increased the size to around 60cm diameter, but it became sturdy enough to hold full amplitude halberd strikes. Also makes it safer to strike with the rim if that's the way you roll.

      Truly, it is this sort of scrappy ingenuity that is being systematically washed out of the human race by mass consumerism. I am a weapon maker myself, and never with the ideal materials. I’ll be following you and learning as much as I can. Specifically, I am looking to learn more about the spear and shield combo, so I’ve added a couple of your videos to my playlists. Keep up the great work, and look me up on Instagram if you are there!

      @SchildwachePotsdam  Před 3 lety +1

      Looking at historical examples (at least the measured once at the royal armories and the met museum) you can find Rotella between 2 to 6kg, with a lot weighting around 2-3 or 3-4kg. Thus the marshall historic is probably in the range of an average shield while the windlass is one of the lighter once. The heavier once also tend to be highly decorated, maybe its the beautiful but less used once we see in the museums nowadays, and the boring every day rotella rusts unmeasured in the archives :D

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  Před 3 lety +2

      We don't have experience with the Cold Steel Targe. I think repurposing it as Rotella depends if it is possible to exchange the center grip with two straps. Also the middle grip would have to be completely removed. But Rotella fencing is lots of fun ❤️

      @nullifye7816 Před 2 lety

      Yes, you can unscrew the handle and the strap ( i even recoment getting rid of the solid handle) and remove the foampad (it might be glued). take care that its a "strong solvent" free paint, i would recomend water based acrylic colors. Best, Stephan =)

I am making sure if I perhaps misunderstood your explanation, or if there is an update on that particular item that the 60cm size has gone out and is replaced with 30cm. It's 2023 and this video was published two years ago so I am not sure.

      We have diffent sledges here, i guess the more traditional wooden sledges are more comon. These dish-sledges are only avalible in more soft and flexible synthetic form, less ideal for a rotella. Maybe we could do sledging with the Riotella or the metal Rotella. Maybe we will test this next winter.

  • @b.h.abbott-motley2427
    @b.h.abbott-motley2427 Před 3 lety +1

    What's the evidence that over 2.5kg is "very heavy" for a rotella? Many extant examples of Renaissance steel shields are more than that, such as a Sir John Smythe's shield at the Met Museum: 55.6cm diameter & 3.6kg. That weight is very common in collections. Edward Cecil wrote that the Dutch targets in use in the early 17th century weighed 6lbs (2.73kg). Renaissance military shields need to be rather thick to be sturdy enough to stop pike thrusts, crossbow bolts, & the like. I don't know that we have any clear surviving examples of specifically civilian fencing rotellas, if such a thing existed, but Giacomo di Grassi noted that the rotella is heavy, mocking those who brace it on the thigh. I have one of those riot shields & do practice with it, but it's significantly lighter than almost all historical shields of that size, so it doesn't simulate much. Sparring with a 1.4kg rotella will differ from sparring with one of a more plausible weigh. I'm not very strong at all, but I feel no need to rest a 1.4kg shield on my thigh. They're a different animal than what di Grassi wrote about.

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  Před 3 lety +3

      You are right, historically the 2.5kg are on the lower spectrum of weights you find on rotella and rotella-like shields. From what I found there are many shields also exuding the 4-5kg. But they are mostly also very highly decorated and more works of art then suitably for fighting (maybe). And in a military context they are maybe heavier as you say, to stop pikes etc.
      The 'very' heavy statemend comes from a modern point of view, we are not really used to use this kind of load on our off-arm, but if you train a while, the increase of weight is not an big issue. However it is easier to start with a lower load to learn the technique and movements and then starting to increase the weight to aim for the average or heavier historical weights.
      If you look at marozzo, there are techniques which require the enemys spear for instance to get stuck in your rotella. If it's a metal rotella, than it has to be thin enough to be punctured by the Spear so it can get stuck. Thus it can not be to thick/heavy.
      This for a beginner, directly starting with anything over 2.5kg may be even a health hazard. Once you build up the corresponding muscle for the movement you can and maybe should go up. The Riotella is here a really beginnerfriendly option, additionally during sparring: it's much nicer to get punched by a 1.5kg synthetic shield in the mask, than a 3.6kg metal one.

    It isn't wrong to use a non-domed/flat circular shield either.

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  Před 3 lety +1

      This is true. Nevertheless a domed shield allows for more arm protection and also a shift in the center of mass, thus the dynamics might change. For a light shield this can be a neglectable. It's always okay to train with what you have on hand 😊
