Jimmy Ellis and Muhammad Ali were quite friendly and fought many exhibitions against one another.
Over the years, the two held public exhibitions all across the world; from India to Sweden, New Zealand, Denmark, England and all points in between.

      Thanks Rich
This video is a perfect example of a couple of things
      1) Ali holding behind the neck. A major defensive tactic that was ignored by the referee for most of his career
      2) his backing away from a left hook. When he was no longer able to move away quickly enough he took massive punishment. Even when he was in his prime he could not counter punch effectively because he was backing away. Watch the CZcams video of Ray Robinson taught by Harry Wiley, moving INTO the left hook then in position to effectively counter with his own left hook.

Thank you for bringing up Ali holding behind the neck! It´s such a dirty move and a real shame he got away with it his entire career. It´s blatant cheating. Similar to how Fury today drags his opponents head down with the left hand and when he lets them back up, it´s to set up his right uppercut. It´s how he hurt Wilder badly numerous times and how he KO´d Cunningham. That Cunningham fight should have been overturned as he won via an illegal move. It was BS.
Mayweather loved that move, but he usually went for a left hook or a quick right hand. @@Johnnybratton802

Interesting. Thanks for the share, I'll look out for that move in some Robinson footage.

At the end of the second round the way Ali dodged and slipped Ellis’ punches was truly beautiful. No wonder he was a legend without throwing a punch l was mesmerised.

Ellis really a blown up Middleweight. A very good fighter, but his chin didnt hold up to the big hitters of the division. His tournament victory was questionable. The Patterson fight was booed loudly and the only judge was the referee. Still accomplished a lot at Heavyweight being a natural Middleweight, RIP

Man you know i didn't care much for Ali back in the day i guess I didn't know greatness when I seen it. That man was amazing the jab was so good he looked like he was off balance sometime but the punches still right on track just amazing. Thank you Rich I hadn't seen this fight in yrs great job as always

For a former middleweight Ellis beat some pretty tough heavies including Quarry, Bonavena (whom he knocked down twice), Chuvalo, and Patterson (although I thought Floyd won that fight). One guy who I know for a fact Ellis would not go near was Al Blue Lewis one of the most ducked guys ever. How do I know? Dundee said so.

Jimmy was able to reach Ali with the jab. This was the big difference between Ali pre and post exile. That split second timing wasn’t there as it had been. Before the layoff, during the championship years, he was virtually impossible to hit. That changed when he came back. Thanks for the post Rich.

Jimmy Ellis has to be one of the most underrated Heavyweights of all time. His back to back victories in the Heavyweight tournament give a great resume and I think a lot of people forget this man went from being a Middleweight contender to Heavyweight Champion.
Had a question for you Rich, how well would you rate this victory for Ali? Would you say Ellis was just as game as he was in the Joe Frazier fight or was he not the same?

    • @RichtheFightHistorian
      @RichtheFightHistorian  Před 8 měsíci

I don't think this is one of Ali's greatest victories...more of a keep busy, grease the gears type of fight. I'll have to rewatch Ellis' fight with Frazier to make the comparison that you ask of.

Ellis was too small to trouble Muhammad Ali as he only weighed 189 lbs compared to Ali's 220lbs. If he was fighting today he would be a cruiserweight. They knew each other's style inside out as they had sparred countless rounds over the years. Ellis went from being a middleweight prospect who lost to Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter and George Benton to being the WBA heavyweight champion. He ended up suffering from CTE in his final years as result of taking big punches from the likes of Joe Frazier and Earnie Shavers.

Jimmy Ellis was a great boxing technician. An extra four inch reach, and the body frame to take another twenty pounds and he would be up there with the all time greats.

The way Ali throws his jabs is just unique. They describe it like a “piston”. But, to me, it is much more whip like, the way it uncoils and snaps, even when it comes from the hip.

  • @johnny5805

I'm surprised that Ali forgave Dundee for going with the another man purely because of a higher cut of the purse. So much for loyalty.

A nice display of Boxing by Ali and Ellis. Jimmy would have been a great champion had the times and men were different, he had nothing to be ashamed of, Ellis might have made a good actor in that Era.

Ellis had a sickness bug leading up to the fight which is why he weighed in so light compared to 200ish lbs when normally fighting at heavyweight.
