I do explain that at 8:30, you'll have to say what you didn't understand.

The way i understood Simmel's thinking on this point is that, the objective cultures strives to ''subordinate'' the individual through different methods and means, example being the function of money, fashion or the process of rationalization. The individual then, tries to subjectivly assimilate what is forced on him from the outside, so he himself can truly become who he is, through the wish to also become a part of the ''general'' and objective. Simmel uses the dialectic method to explain the relationship bettween the subjective and objective, which is resolved through conflict and moments of actual cooperation, he didn't think conflicts were necessarily a bad thing. But he's really vague in his methodology of describing and exploring these theories, it's no wonder, he is considered one of the first sociologists/philosophers who incorporated ''postmodernistic'' thinking into their works...

In fact, I think it's safe to say, he didn't actually have a solid theory going, but he did ask some interesting questions about HOW methodology of a certain theoretical presupposition should be formulated
