When this song was out, my youngest son was about 4 or 5 and I caught him walking around the house singing "I left my brains down in Africa". I laughed and under my breath I said "Apparently".

Growing up in the eighties, I had no idea at the time how fortunate I was hearing this type of music all the time on a daily basis. Times have surely changed.
As a South African i gotta point that this is our unofficial anthem. They play this at almost every event. Never gets old.

Not all Toto. But all these guys were big time session players that were highly daughter-in-law after especially when someone needed someone to come in to studio and lay down a guitar lick and solo. He would reach out to a few of these guys.

Ok I wanted to say synthesizer but I wasn't 100% sure so I guessed Electric Organ.
I’m from New Zealand and worked in a Holiday Inn hotel in China in 1996 as the F&B Manager and I hired a Filipino band to play in the lounge bar who asked me to figure out the lyrics for this song so they could play it. It took me over an hour on my tape deck constantly replaying it to get the right lyrics. They knew I played guitar as a hobby so a few months later they asked me to and I played the last set with the band with my guitar for the first time ever in public nervous as hell. I also played and sang this song with them and the lead singer of that band is now my wife and we have four daughters who also all sing. I have it all on tape and it still freaks me out to watch lol

"According to popular myth, at the first recording sessions, in order to distinguish their own demo tapes from other bands' in the studio, Jeff Porcaro wrote the word "Toto" on them. In the early 1980s, band members told the press that the band was named after Toto the dog from The Wizard of Oz.
After the completion of the first album, the band and record were still unnamed. David Hungate, after viewing the name on the demo tapes, explained to the group that the Latin words "in toto" translated to "all-encompassing." Because the band members played on so many records and so many musical genres, they adopted the name "Toto" as their own."
So they became Toto, as in "We're not just playing for Kansas any more?" 😉

There are no females in Toto or backing Toto, that was the lead singer.
This song was very popular when I was in 6th grade. I loved it and still do. Toto is a GREAT group, their song "Rosanna" "Love Isn't Always on Time", "I'll Be Over You" and my favorite "I Won't Hold you Back"
"Rosanna" is about Rosanna Arquette ( her famous siblings are John and Patricia Arquette)
I also heard Eddie Money's song "Shakin" is about Rosanna Arquette, but that could be rumor. At any rate Rosanna left an impression. Lol

The vocals at the end that you thought were female were actually the vocals of Bobby Kimball their lead vocalist with the bushy mustache. The song was about how the people would go out to pray that God would bless the rains for the crops that year.

The high vocals at the end are not female. It's the lead vocalist Bobby Kimball. The dude with the stasche and the percussion instrument. Check out Hold The Line, Rosanna, Stop Loving you, Pamela

One of the most underrated bands in the history of contemporary music--this song and "Hold the Line" prove it beyond a doubt. Some of the best vocal work in any song. Period.
Toto is a band of studio musicians who played on many of their contemporary's records and albums and this song is probably one of the most analyzed. There are many theories but in the end it is just good. The complexities are just the result of talented studio musicians playing together and having fun.
Toto was the studio band for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album!
A few of them were in the backing band on the Grease soundtrack.
@@ZacCostilla Yea, Toto 4 (with Africa on it) won Album of the Year at the Grammys, they then delayed their tour to work on Thriller, which won the same award a year later. They even wrote Human Nature (one of the tracks on Thriller).

Jeff Porcaro is their drummer, and he is on everyone’s “best ever” list.
Listen to “Rosanna” and pay particular attention to the drums. The beat was actually dubbed “the Rosanna shuffle” and there is a CZcams video where Porcaro describes how he composed it. It’s pretty famous and there are darn few drummers who can pull it off.
Sadly, Porcaro has expired and thrown off this mortal coil. RIP.

Not trying to be combative but I have only seen him on a few beat ever list.
This is a Perfect example of the 80’s, not my “sound’ but can’t deny the talent and composition. Still played in public spaces and that is the mark of a great artist.
Also the song Rosanna is about the lead singer's at the time girlfriend actress Rosanna Arquette. You might know her better as the brother of actor David Arquette from the Scream movies and he was married to actress Courtney Cox.
If you decide to react to it I would suggest the live version. Post Porcaro, but the new drummer nails it.

Jeff Porcaro died in a bizarre gardening incident too, a common risk facing drummers.
When Toto first formed, a good portion of the band was made up of 3 brothers - the Porcaro brothers! Jeff (Drummer), Steve (Keyboardist and Singer), and Mike Porcaro (Bassist). Jeff died early in life back in 1992, but not before laying down many good tracks with his drumming skills. Mike died from ALS in 2015. He had a long career as a Bassist - touring with Toto, Boz Scaggs, and Seals and Crofts. Steve Porcaro is the last surviving Porcaro brother. He wrote the song "Human Nature" for Michael Jackson. He was also a session musician for the band Yes, and Jefferson Airplane.

Heard in a documentary that 'Africa' is the world's most mathematically perfect song. True or not, it's a beautiful song, vocally and musically.
If you want more piano you need to react to Bruce Hornsby and the range "the way it is". 95% chance you will recognize the basic piano part because a rapper sampled it. It may be the best piano riff of all time.

These guys played on nearly everything that was recorded in L.A., from the late 70s, and into the 90s. A little album called Thriller, for example. But they've had a huge career as a band of their own as well.

What you are hearing along with the piano is a "Kalimba" (sometimes called a finger organ) It is used in a lot of the early songs by Earth Wind & Fire (Murice White) Songs like Devotion, Reasons, Fantasy, Kalimba Story and others

The lyrics are mainly by David Paich - the keyboard player. He had two experiences which combined to become the inspiration for the song - as a child, he attended a Catholic school, where he met several missionaries to the continent: their descriptions of the preciousness of the rains became the chorus lyric "I bless the rains down in Africa." Paich later had watched a documentary on Africa, and seen photos and video of the suffering that a drought-stricken continent suffered - and this developed a heart for a place he had never been. The song describes this as a love - perhaps even a romance - of a man for a continent (the "she" referred to throughout the song.) Drummer Steve Porcaro says "A white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he's never been there, he can only tell what he's seen on TV or remembers in the past."The band didn't really expect much from the song - it was a significant departure from their usual sound - but it made quite an impact on the listeners, hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the video has over 694 million CZcams views :-)

These guys are top session musicians (have played on many artist's songs) and this is a group they formed to do some of their own music. You'll note how incredibly tight their sound is and how impeccably produced it is. This is likely their best record. The drummer Jeff Porcaro passed at age 38 from a heart attack.
Toto was a super group of session musicians, they were impeccable. The late great Jeff Pocoro is widely regarded as one of the best percussionists ever. Top 5 up there with Buddy Rich, Neil Peart and such. They were always amazing at vocal harmonies. You need to do Rosanna, and maybe Hold the Line by them. BTW, they use a synthesizer keyboard for all those cool 'piano' sounds. Love the vibe you two put to appreciating music.

Meaning of “Africa” by Toto. “Africa” is a song recorded by the rock band Toto. The lyrics of “Africa” capture the quandary of a guy who must choose between his two loves - the continent of Africa and girl he finds therein.
Well, according to David Paich, the song is inspired by when he was in Catholic school as a boy, they had brought in priests who had done missionary work in Africa. I think the conflict in the song is meant to be over the work they were sent to do over their love for the continent and what they'd found there. One fun fact is that the rest of the group didn't like the song, it almost got cut from the album.
I'm 56 years old, so I've been listening to music for a while now. Honestly, I think that this is my favorite song of all time. I don't know why I love it so much. It just sounds so dang cool. The music along with the harmony of the voices gives me chills to this day, at a point in my life when I don't get near as many "chills" as I used to. Something about this song makes me feel adventurous and brave.
When I hear it in public unexpectedly I get very emotional.
I am one year older then you. It is because we were late teens when we first heard it. Very beautiful yet melancholy. There was NOTHING that sounded like it at the time. Incredible arrangement and vocals. Truly a masterpiece of the 80s and frankly one of the finest songs in decades.

I’m 64 so I understand your comments all to well. I enjoy watching reactions because I know there isn’t much real music these day’s and we understand the power of the Radio. I just get a warm fuzzy watching youngster’s hearing what we heard on the radio on our way to the store. Thank goodness we have CZcams that provides what you and I lived and heard every day. I also love this couples vibe. I believe they are genuine. I’d be willing to bet you and I get these same little fuzzies when we watch a reaction from these youngsters. My sister (two years older) and I had a really cool, young babysitter. Without our parents knowing, she bought three tickets to the Beatles concert in Detroit I believe it was their ’64 tour. Our baby sitter kind of conned our parents into going out that night and we were going to stay the night at her house. That was not uncommon so no red flags there. I was only six and kind of had some anxiety just because of fan rage. We (sister) and I would sit on our living room floor and listen to a transistor radio waiting for a BEATLES tune to come up. Our Mother took notice and bought us the “Meet the Beatles” album. We wore this album out.
It was a magical time and we got to live it. Don’t know about you but I feel blessed to have been brought up in this time. I would not change my age if it meant I wouldn’t be brought up at that same time frame. ✌️to you and yours.

In 2015, David Paich explained that the song is about a man's love of a continent, Africa, rather than just a personal romance with the lyrics based on a late night documentary of african suffering.and plight. the sound WAS a keyboard a synthesizer a Yamaha CS-80, a polyphonic analog synthesizer, to be specific which was introduced to paich by . Steve Porcaro, the band's synth player, they basically wrote the song around the synth and created what became the songs iconic opening run

From what I’ve read and heard about this song (not any musical expert here) that Paich wrote this song after seeing a news story on TV about Africa. If I’m remembering correctly, the song is about a missionary in Africa and is torn between the love of his work and love for a woman. The first verse lets us know she’s flying there for him.

The “female vocals” are the lead singer who isn’t singing the verses on this song. He’s not female 😃. Toto was like an all-star band of the greatest LA session musicians of the late 70s/early 80s. Masters of their craft, but lacking in the art department imo. I wouldn’t worry too much about the meaning of this one. This band is all over Michael Jackson’s Thriller album and the keyboard player wrote the song Human Nature. Check out Rosanna and Hold The Line for other Toto classics.

“ Rosanna” and “ Hold The Line” are a must. Once you discover TOTO it’s extremely easy to have their music ready on repeat. There is no better sound then real musicians playing real instruments. The talent and hard work required to reach this level of sound just can’t be underestimated.

When it came out, I thought and still think they are singing about the continent, Africa. I've heard from so many people that once you visit, it stays with you and makes you yearn to return. I watch another channel that you might enjoy, it's wild earth. They take you on an actual safari in several different African parks. It's absolutely wonderful! My favorite animals have changed from elephants to the hyenas of Djuma. Once you see the babies, they will become your favorite too. Oh, and it is family oriented. They encourage the younger viewers to ask questions and they answer them. :)

This is an eighties song and the sound of the keyboard is a synthesizer sound you're hearing that was popular in that era. The guy that wrote the song says he grow up with a special love for Africa due to his Catholic school teacher infected him stories about Africa where she lived and taught.

Toto IV, a great album. Listen to “Roseanna” sometime, the other big hit from this album. This song is so well known and beloved, kind of like ELO’s Mr. Blue Sky.

I saw Toto 3 years ago. this song was so big they would stop the music and the whole crowd would sing the chorus..It was so fun and they still sounded great!
We saw them a few weeks ago open for Journey. I loved the jam section they did at the end where Jospeh would have the crowd repeat after him
“Africa” is a legendary song. Another memorable song about Africa is Enya’s great “Storms in Africa.” Enya has many gorgeous songs, including Book of Days and Orinoco Flow. When you hear them, you will remember them forever.
Two more great Enya songs are 'Only Time' and 'Caribbean Blue.'

Toto's guitarist, Steve Lukather, is also one of the most prolific session guitarists, having played on way over 1,000 albums for a wide range of notable artists including Michael Jackson, Chicago, Aretha Franklin, and Richard Marx. Jay needs to listen to his solo at the end of Lionel Ritchie's Running with the Night. Incomparable.
Also Jeff and Steve Porcaro worked with a lot of artists in session work.

Steve did the Guitar riff's for Thriller, he even wanted to do the solo for Beat It. But when he heard Eddie Van Halen was going to do it, he fanboyed himself.

It's weird because it was "Rosanna" that got all the accolades back in the day but "Africa" is far more remembered today.

The songs you guys review, in their time, we're the absolute best that those times had to offer. "Africa?" Toto? " They were great, and then they put out " Africa. " It stopped people in their tracks. The drums, the chorus. Jesus! When I finally got to Africa I did what I promised myself, I stood in a street corner and yelled "I blessed the rains down in Africa."
You just hit a goldmine. Toto is one of the best popular bands in music history. Super talented and creative people. I was your age when they hit and my musical horizons were expanding with the times. They are transcendent. You simply can't get enough Toto. They were made for the playlist. Really needed that song right now. Much love from California.

The instrumental solo was done with a computerized keyboard, aka "synthesizer." They can be programmed to sound like many different instruments. (Even a standard piano!)

You might also like some late seventies/early eighties Genesis, songs like "Follow You, Follow Me" (1978), "Turn It On Again" (1980), and "Abacab" (1981), maybe also some Peter Gabriel from the same period ("Games Without Frontiers" and "I Don't Remember" from 1980), maybe too Tears for Fears' 1981 hit "Change." This 1982 Toto song brought to my mind all that because this song would have flowed right into or out of those ones on the radio at the time.
This is one of the best pieces of music ever recorded. Incredible song, and the choice of instruments is phenomenal.

You two, if you loved the harmonies and soaring vocals in this, and when you have listened to Journey, you really ought to try “Kyrie” by the band Mr. Mister. I just checked, very few have reacted to that song. Total 80s vibe. Fantastic vocals and harmonies. Bonus, when you find out what the lyrics for that song really mean, it is totally your scene! Do it! Mr. Mister, Kyrie!

Toto was a band that got their start as studio musicians who became a band on their own. Very gifted musicians. Toto IV was their best album, which included this song, Africa, Rosanna(apparently about Rosanna Arquett), I Won’t Hold You Back( my personal fav), Waiting for Your Love( also a fav), Good forYou, no bad song on that album. I love Toto! "Africa" remains a classic after 40 years. I've played it hundreds of times in my life, and it still rocks. Other great Toto songs include "Hold the Line", "Rosanna", "Pamela", and "Animal".
This song brings back so many memories. Played keys in a band during my high school years in the 80's. Rosanna and Africa were two of the songs we covered. You should definitely check out some other Toto songs.

In the 80's, keyboards were often synthesized and that's what you were hearing pounded out on Toto's keyboard. When this song came out, I was pregnant with my oldest child and she'd dance in my belly when we heard AFRICA.

One of my favorite songs ever! The song is really about wanting to visit Africa, a place he loves but has never visited. The instrument you're talking about is a synth (synthesizer), basically an off shoot of an electric keyboard. And actually, the female harmonies you mentioned are the lead singer in falsetto! Just a little bit of what makes this song incredible!
I've heard two stories of what the song is about. One: It's a novelty song about a guy who is a werewolf. "Frightened of this thing I've become ". Two: It's about cunnilingus. "Rains down in Africa " is a euphemism for wet p@$$y.
I feel like this song perfectly explains what it is like being from Africa, you might get drawn by the bright lights of the worlds cities but as soon as you out of the country you ache to get back onto African soil as soon as possible, I will never trade living here for any or all the other destinations in the world. Africa and have a innocence about itself that you don’t feel anywhere else in the world, even with all our problems there’s nowhere more beautiful to spend your life than Africa

The piano was a synthesizer. A piano-type keyboard that controls electronic circuits. Very big beginning in the late 70s and now almost any song you hear in modern music has synths in it. They’re capable of a huge range of sounds, from mimicking other instruments to totally new sounds created from scratch.
