- The Dell Precision T5810 was an interesting production tower offering from Dell half a decade ago and at the time it was a very expensive computer, featuring a high end X79 Xeon processor and a quad channel memory. Now this T5810 workstation can be easily converted to a gaming computer on a super low budget and it can deliver plenty of joy while playing any modern day titles.

I picked up a T5810 to do a mini project, 1620 V3, 16GB 2133, AMD Firepro W5100, it was able to game at 1080p Low @30+FPS on "No man's sky.
I will be installing a 5500XT once my 2x6 to 8pin adapter is here, upgrade to 1650 v3 for £12ish & mess around with the cooling etc, very decent capable machine!
I'm not using mine for a gaming machine, but a home server / lab server, but this video was still very helpful, thank you. I have a T5810 with Xeon E5-2680 (14 real, no-kidding cores, 28 effective threads), 128GB RAM, 2TB SSD and 10TB HDD that I have spent less than $500 on total. I'll be hosting a couple dozen VMs and a handful of Docker apps. This machine will do this without breaking a sweat and still have resources left to run some games if they're on a separate SSD (possibly utilizing an M.2 on a PCIe x8 slot). It's incredible to get this kind of hardware for that price. That kind of machine would have been over $10k just 5 years ago. This is why I liketo wait until the end of a business lifecycle (about every 5 years), because these machines can do so much more than consumer-grade machines for about a 5th to 10th of the price.

Built three of these years ago, when the RTX2060 Super founder editions were $350. I had three T-5810s laying around the office, all with the E5-1650 v4, 4.0ghz, CPUs. I went to E-Bay and upgraded the PSUs and pretty sure, Amazon for splitters to combine 6pins to power the RTX2060S. Used a flathead screw driver to carefully pry off the metal piece behind the panel to fit the GPU, pretty easy actually, just take it slow to not damage the panel. Never had heat issues, have no extra fans. My only splurge was three Alienware 24”240hz monitors, because @1080p my kids easily go over 100fps-300fps depending on game. To date, I still can not justify upgrading their PC as anything I look at in the $1,000-$1,200 range would be worse or equal.
I got 3 of these at my local recyclers for 50 cents per pound they were a little banged up on the outside but everything worked.
Can we get the video of the whole process of how you customized the case and made a glass window?

Dell has the cooling figured out. You don't need any janky fans. I am running a T5810 with an E5-2697 V4, 64GB RAM, GTX-980 and a pair of 6TB RAID 1 HDD's. It's mainly because Dell designs their machine properly, meaning they have different thermal zones. What you should mention is the annoying metal/rubber bracket/extension on the lid that prevents full sized GPU installs.

I built a precision 5810 on a budget . specs are ....xeon e5- 2695 v3 14 core 28 threads , 32gb ram {upgradable to 256 gb}, 1 samsung 970 pro m.2 1tb w/ pci-e card , 1 samsung 870 evo sata ssd 1tb, zotac rtx 2060 super , tp-link ac1300 pci-e wifi card. oem 685 watt psu. it runs 1080p at ultra settings and 4k at medium. All cooling is stock becuase this beast was overbuilt when it comes to cooling. the only thing, other than the upgrades was reapplying a premium thermal paste . A very good and stable machine for around $500 ., upgrades

What about bottlenecks with (a) PCI express 3.0 and (b) your relatively low Xeon clock speed?

you say that the 3 front fans suck air into the case, but on my Dell T5810 they blow it out on the contrary.

GPU yes, the CPU and Ram are a little tricky since is technically server ram and has to be ECC

For a GPU, depending on which PSU do you have, if it's the 685W one, you can do 370TI. As for CPU, you will have to check the service tag and see what Dell are saying for maximum supported

@HardwareSense I have exactly the same model and am running a GTX650 TI boost with 6 pin connector but have just bought an Rx480 which has 8 pin, I went to local comp shop and he wasnt sure if his cable would work due to it being dell it may have a different pin setup? what cable would i need from the PSU motherboard to the graphics card?

How hard is it to put a clear window in the removable panel on the case? Is the glass you mounted tempered? I found 4 Dell Precision towers! 3 T3620s & 1 T1650. All have the Xeon CPU! The 1650 is about 10 years old and the 3620s are about 7 years old! But still run!
I’d imagine you’d have to use a small angle grinder, probably touching up the edges with rubber so it’s not sharp then attaching either acrylic or glass to the back using plaster tape

When you consider the power consumption is it still worth it, or are more modern, efficient, processors cheaper when you consider the energy use over a year?

what size is the motherboard?
I appreciate the work you put into this video. But you kind of sidestepped the tremendously high power that those old Xeon's used compared to modern CPUs. And also, that newer Ryzen platform can be upgraded, where as these end up as giant paperweights around my office after 3 years.
All that is true but we are talking about Ultra budget gaming, keeping things very cheap, not everyone can afford upgrading. Also after 8 years since the Precision was released you can see that they are not only not a paperweight, but beat the Ryzen in all games.
@@HardwareSense And the power consumption difference isn't that big if you select the correct CPU. The Xeon 2640 v3, for example, works great in these and a 90W TDP part. It's also $20. Even parts with officially higher TDP most often do not run at the full wattage when gaming.
Tremendously high power? The best CPU you can put in there is the E5-2699 V4, with a TDP of 145W.... That's for 22 cores. An R9-5950X has a TDP of 105W for 16 cores... A modern CPU such as the i7-13700K has a TDP of 253W.... with 8E and 8P cores. So no, in summary I don't really think the most power hungry CPU you can put in a 5810 has a TDP that is out of line with other modern performance CPU's and certainly not 'tremendously high power'. And recall this is TDP. IRL my 5810 rarefy pulls more than 100W at the plug doing normal non-gaming stuff. It has a e5-2699 V4, 96GB of memory, 1.6TB Intel Optane drive, 2x6TB RAID 1 HDD's and a GTX-980. My gaming rig pulls significantly more, but it has an R9-5950X, RTX-3080 ti, 64GB, a 2TB NVME and 2x 8TB RAID 1 SAS drives. The real power hog in the house is my Dell Precision 7910, with 2x E5-2699V4's, 128GB RDIMM, 1.2TB Intel Optane, 4x8TB SAS drives in a RAID 5, and a RTX-2080 ti....

I just picked one up for $200, only problem is the door doesn't allow tall cards. Any advice or a video to add the window like you did? I need at least a RX 580 to play Half Life Alex for Stream VR.
Did you try to remove the rubber support bracket that is on the door?
Not yet, from what I was seeing on Dell forums is the only way to fit a full sized card requires either a sledgehammer or angle grinder.
If you use a "U" type adapter when connecting the 8 pin power cord to the top of a 4 3/8" graphics card the cover will fit without removing the plastic/rubber piece. Most card manufacturers offer the smaller 4 3/8" sizes of 3060s, 70s, etc. but they don't have the better cooling options available with the taller 5.5" cards. You can unscrew the plastic/rubber piece on the inside of the case cover but it is designed to be permanently attached (clinched?) to a metal piece to the cover that interferes with installing the larger cards. Not sure how easy it would be to scrape that metal piece off without bending the cover. Cutting it out and replacing it with a clear or ventilated piece is a great solution. Adding the rear exhaust fan is another excellent idea.

The CPU is actively cooled! You can't see it because of the shroud, but there's a fan in the middle drawing air through. Very efficient design and works great, I hardly ever hear the fan throttling up.

I'm running a 3060 12g on a e5, 1650 v3 and never have any issues with temps. The only thing I don't like is you can only set the fan speeds in the bios
So long as the CPU cooler fan supports the CPU's TDP, you should be good to go. The E5-2699v3 has a TDP of 145W, which is 10W more than the E5-2690v3. I think you could check if the fan fits this specification by looking its part number up.
My work is about to sell me my previous machine, a 5810 with the E5 1660 v3 (8 cores, 16 threads) and 32GB of RAM, but Im checking how can I upgrade to a decent GPU because I want it to play fighting games in the living room and some emulation.
Also they are selling it to me for less than 20 bucks (including peripherals and two monitors) because my supervisor said more or less verbatim: "Look, me paying shipping so it gets here to headquarters and store it in a warehouse because cybersecurity measures say we cannot use it anymore is more expensive than selling you the machine."

No that was before Nvme, only Sata 3
You can get an adapter for 15 bucks on eBay and then boot from NVME. Very simple.
Help my 5810 is acting strange... Only dvi gpu's work... DisplayPort doesn't output on any gpu i have.. I'm trying to use a AMD Radeon pro WX5100... No dp output. Then trying the 2e wx5100 in my other pc and that one doesn't work in my 5810 as well.. wtf is going on..

Not really, there were versions with 425, 625, 850 an a 1000 I believe, luckily it's very easy to upgrade them.

@@waheed53gb Actually I do. My Gpu temps are a little high even at high rpm with side panel on. But when I remove the side panel is temps are normal. I definitely need a exhaust fan. I will go with a 90mm fan.
@@humayuntariq3530 I faced the same problem today when my RX570 and CPU hit 73 degrees while playing a graphic intensive video game. I took off the side panel and the inside was expelling hot air.
I noticed that the front exhaust fans were not epinning fast enough for proper air circulation.
So I went into the BIOS and changed the fan speed from auto to manual. And then I set the speed to 30 percent fixed. Afterwards, I replaced the side panel.
Now the GPU and CPU temperatures were 65 and 55 respectively.
I think you should try this approach before installing another fan.
