    I'm totally on board with the "notes don't matter" philosophy and I like the idea of building rhythmic vocabulary, but I also wonder if it would be instructive to focus on what things sound "bad" and why. I think about this a lot in terms of picking a color scheme because I can't explain why any two colors don't work in a certain situation. My wife is quick to tell me that my outfit choice "doesn't work", but she can't quite articulate why. I'd be curious if you guys could find a way to talk about why/when certain musical choices don't work as a counterpoint to the notion of "every note works with every chord if you know what you're doing".

    You guys are so great! I’m a guitarist but I glean so much wonderful stuff from you. Both killer players! Thanks!!

    The one part that’s missing for me in this discussion is the beginner/intermediate jazz player angle. I think the goal should be to develop the intuition and that requires a mix of “the notes matter” and the “notes don’t matter”. :)

    Great show. Regarding theory and when/how it is useful, there's something that I came across on a music education podcast called Music Student 101 (I hope it's OK to mention a specific source). They presented the concept of using your "theory brain" to supplement your intuitive or aural abilities. For example, you might have a only a rough idea of how to play a particular few measures from a song. You can then switch to your "theory brain" narrow down the possibilities based on common patterns which are easily captured in music theory terms. Then, switch back to your "in the moment" mode, and so on. I expect that with long experience that this all sort of becomes one integrated process, and things just flow.

    It’s where you play it! How the notes sound is dependent of the location and the people listening.

    Both of you are amazing Adam and Peter. Really enjoying your videos👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏💖💖💖💖
    When i heard Adam said: 'The notes don't matter' , it was a game changer in my improvisation! Focus on the ENJOYMENT of improv process, BE IN the THE PRESENT MOMENT (awareness) and REALLY ENJOY the present moment.... (*DON'T THINK with egoic mind, don't involve your thoughts*) ... and just let your fingers AUTOMATICALLY go where they want to go. Like Adam says, enjoy the FREEDOM !!!!
    AWARENESS = PRESENT MOMENT

    Every time i hear the piece of intro music I want to hear the rest of the song. Did you write it? Is it on spotify?

    The original video was Legendary. This one isn't. Second guessing? A little politics thrown in? Please don't.
