I had a Renault 5 many years ago. It too was a '78. It broke down endlessly, till I could stand it no more, and walked away from it, after it's last breakdown one night, telling a local scrap merchant to have it.
Yours, though is lovely in that gorgeous green and the wheels are great.
Thanks for a great channel. 👍
I remember when these were introduced in North America when I was young. Nice choice of colour with the green, it goes well with the hearing aid beige interior lol. The wheels look like they belong on it.
Excellent build. These older Matchbox cars are AWESOME. The suspension makes them even more fun. I really love the 70's Matchbox castings. Some of the 80's were a bit odd, but I have always loved Matchbox/Lesney. They made a awesome product. Thank you for resurrecting them.
This was probably the only classic french car that put France on the map, specially the GT and rally models
beautiful color, looks so natural on it!
I really like this casting. Here in Mexico, many people used to call it "Zapatito" (little shoe) and it was the utility car of the phone company (Telmex) for years. The green colour and wheels look fantastic. Nice little car, I love it. I'm glad you have your new gloves. 👍
Very cool. I had a yellow one back when I was young. Whenever I would play with my cars, I would tend to assign my teddy bear to drive this one.
That green is just PERFECT with the interior. Well done!
Ah the Renault 'Le Car' - as it was marketed in the US. Which brings to mind an old Mad Magazine comic where a passerby tapes a sign saying 'Le Flat' to the fender above the offending deflated tyre...
Lichen that green. We has a five door 'Le Car' in a similar colour...
The green really is nice. It looks like a very appropriate shade for that year.
What a lovely shade of green! Sure beats the whites, blacks, and silvers that are the majority of today's boring vehicles. Nicely done!
Sweet little cars, very popular when I was growing up, I particularly remember the fast Gordini version. Great paint job, I reckon the vicar in the village would drive this one.
Great looking little car. That green is really nice and those wheels compliment the overall look of this casting.
My older brother had an R5 when they first came to the US. Believe it or not it was Green! His son, who was a toddler, named it Greeno.
Green is fast becoming a favourite colour in 1/64, looks brilliant.
Another little Total Package MG, unreal Show.
That’s one of the nices Renaults I’ve seen looks really cool in the light metallic green
Thanks for keeping the videos flowing during difficult times..
Always great to see a new video from Matchbox Garage pop-up. In these troubled times they are a much needed escape to a simpler world full of memories of long-gone vehicles. Thank you for all your hard work on these 👍
That color turned out really nice on the Renault. I think the wheels look like the steel wheels they used to put on MGs and Ford Capris in the 70s. Nice work!
You’re pumping these videos out quickly now. Definitely not a complaint 👌🏻
I try to get one out every 2 days
Thanks for the little bit of joy, Very nice paint choice and well applied !
Renault 5TL, -74. The first car I drove. Love these rust buckets..
Lovely finish, there. My late father always wanted a Renault 5 Turbo, after hiring one on a holiday in Spain in the early 1990's. My mum said that it made him drive on narrow Spanish country roads like 'A bloody maniac', so, when he changed cars, she put her foot down. He never got one, but instead, bought a big Audi. Which, when the mood took him, he would drive 'like a bloody maniac', just, I suspect, to keep mum on her toes... He was a very, very good driver, but did enjoy winding mum up with a touch of the 'loud pedal' every now and again. 😆😆😆
That Renault 5 on that color with the same color seats was my brothers first car, which he got passed from my aunty.... Great memories mate. Thanks for that Rob
I hope you are keeping well Juan
@@MatchboxGarage Yes mate. Doing great thanks. Hope you and your family too Rob
Wasn't this one called 'Le Car' in America? And no, it NEVER looked as good as you've made it look! Magnifique!
Your painting skills have come a long way, Rob. Nice job
Love the little French cars, reliable and so much fun! And a nice job again on this one! 😍
I have always liked this casting ever since it came out in that yellow color with LeCar in black on the side. Typically I am drawn to the more quirky cars in Matchbox/Hotwheels/Majorette and this is no exception. You really did this little runabout wonder. Great color choice, and you are right the interior was perfect once cleaned up. Keep putting out those fantastic restorations and customizations my friend!
Very cool Job on the 78 Renault 5 great job with the paint and wheels and tires .
What a pretty color! The interior color goes well with the green.
Nice choice on the wheels. They compliment the car well.
Love the shade of green, it looks great on the casting. You just keep churning out great customs. Those wheels look like they are a GM rally rim, possibly a Chevrolet or Pontiac wheel.
Pretty cool! Reminded me of a le car casting I got two years in a row at Christmas when I was younger. Very cool!
One of your best paint job and color choice. Well done!
Beautiful restoration, I love that green paint, it’s perfect and the wheels suit the model really well, excellent job 👌👍😊
I am very happy to see you this restoration, it was my dad's car in my childhood back in the 80s and it reminds me of some good memories and stories with it 😊 👍
Love those 5s. I had this model when I was a kid. My brother’s first real car was a mark two
really beautiful restoration, it is beautiful, it is my favorite car😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
My first new car was a 1980 R5 1.4L LeCar. Mine was red with black interior. Loved it. The vents above the taillights were black in the USA
Borrowed a mint green 5 in south of france. Scary car. Suspension was shot, no head rests and no belts. Felt like meat in a tin can. Thanks for another video!
Nice front end detail; including the air vents on the hood. Nice color choice. Good job overall Rob!!!
What a fantastic looking little model, superb job 👌🏻
An OUTSTANDING customization job!!.. Looks all ready for the next country road!!.. Keep up the great work Bud!!
My TL had caramel interior, Marron Glacé (Metallic Brown) exterior, a sliding fabric Webasto sun roof and 'umbrella handle' dashboard gear change. Took it from about 30k to 125k before it rusted to pieces! Absolutely loved it.
The color looks great and the wheels look good on that car.👍👍😊
Bloody love Rob! Oh remember having a Renault 5... lovely job colour really does suit with those wheels, not over the top! Nice! 👍
green looked great. wheel selection suited it
Gorgeous job. You have got to be the most prolific restorer Rob. Every ones a good one too.
Grafter mate 😎
Beautiful simply beautiful little car
That green looks great.
The color is great, kinda reminds me of an old Ford Fiesta. Great work on it mate
You’re very entertaining I live in the USA I love your channel I watch everyone you do keep up the great work
Great video Rob. Had a little yellow one as a kid. In the States they were called the LeCar
Always liked the look of Renault 5 and this one looks just great 😎
Very nice colour and those wheels look very good and right sized for that car.
I think those wheels look very much same style as Alpine 110 wheels 😀
Bonjour ! I have a 1988 Renault 5 as a daily, been driving it for 4 years. Really fun car to throw around corners! I'd like to drive a GT Turbo one day. With 60 bhp more than mine it must be a blast.
The colour you chose to go with is very close to my car!
The green was a lovely choice
That's a great looking car, Rob!! I really like the paint color! The wheels look great on that Renault and your detailing is always excellent! Another beautiful restoration! 👍👍👍👍
I remember the Renault Dauphine back in the late 50's to the the late 60's. It was a neat little car and kind of popular here in America. I remember the ads on T.V. Never saw, any ads of Renault after that.
I didn't know this video is two years old as it was just recommended courtsey of youtube! Despite growing up in the States, the original yellow variation with "Le Car" side tampos was a favorite. This was when Matchbox returned to its roots with fantasticly accurate vehicles and novel moving parts. That plastic tailgate similar to the ones on the Cougar Villager and Citroen CX wagon / estate were remarkably durable plastic! Pretty much known as "Le Car" in the US, it was something novel, and was a common import car in that era when the "Big Three" still dominated the market. By that time, Renault was heavily linked with American Motors, and these were sold through AMC dealers, although I have vague memories of a nearby foreign car dealer selling these with a number of brightly colored models (lime green, orange, lemon yellow) on the lot. I don't know if I'd like to see Renault back in the US market, but Peugeot has some mouth-watering cars that might provide a great line of vehicles to re-enter North America in the Stellantis monolith car manufacturer.
Very nice. Cute little car. Stay safe.
Glad you're doing the paint removal in a place with better ventilation. I do hope you're airbrushing with a mask as well. I agree that green with the windscreen looks good.
Yes I wear a mask during the majority of the process now
It was called the "Le Car" here in the states...
What a gorgeous colour, and the wheels are nice too. And those goldish wheels would look great on a 70's Datsun 240, or a Toyota 2000
The problem is the size of them they are so small
@@MatchboxGarage oh jeez, I see. If you're able to get your hands on a diecast that's smaller than a hotwheels, or matchbox, maybe it will work out. Or even something with smaller wheel wells
@@MatchboxGarage Maybe put them on a Mini? They look like the Minilite wheels that were fitted to the Mini Coopers that were sold in the '90s (and that the works rally Minis often had in the '60s). Minilites would also look good on a '70s rally car - like a Mk 2 Escort.
I used to own one of the later models of the R5 in real life so anything 5 is of interest to me in particular and I love that green colour and wheels. très bien Robert
Merci Mark
Nice clean look. Perfect!
That renault look awsome,.Rob seeyou on the next video.
Wow that green! This one turn out real nice🤘
Cool little car.. Tires look great.
Rob, sacrificing you health for a video of the caustic Sosa shot is not what your viewers want (I hope) that shot today was fine.
Love the little Car, the green is right for it
Great result Rob, well done.
Damn, this looks so perfect.
Nice. Work. Love. The. Wheels. Looking. Good. Brother. Lee
I love the color. I was wanting to paint one of mine green, but wasn't sure. Great job Rob
Nicely done, sir. I also think the color is sharp.
I really dig this one! I saw recently that someone puts Chrome pen down on the tail lights first then ads red over them. either strategically or fully over. gives the red a more modern, metallic look. like it's shiny reflective under the red lens like in real life. I did this myself to a couple cars now and it really does make them pop. Like the original tampo from hot-wheels premium line.
Gorgeous paint job 👌🏼👌🏼
Nice build and paint job 👌
Helpful Hint: reverse your drill and it won't remove "too much" material because it doesn't eat the metal- it simply grinds it away. It's pretty delicate stuff.
Hi Rob, great video, you have done this well,it's looks brilliant, for a quick glance I thought the wheels were gold lol, with them and the paint it is tidy.
I miss my old Renault 5! Never seen Cragar SS wheels on one though! Lovely paint finish too
Nicely done my friend
Nice job on the small fine details..
I love that green, looks awesome!
Another clever colour choice Rob; Renault used a very similar shade.
Nice Work on the Car! There was a time Renault dealed with AMC to sell cars in the US and they didn't do so well through out the 1980's mustly because some of the cars were probably built with different engine parts or there were some people in US who didn't want to buy a French Car it was also mention in the AMC Pacer video on CZcams and there also a document from the CZcams Channel Marspeed that talked about AMC Motors and their Merger with Chrysler and the Cars AMC sold that were phased out including the rebadged Renaults they were selling.
Nathan I agree, I remember most comments here in Ohio were negatives about the 3 lug wheels and the AMC dealer network. The older AMC fans didn't like the newer cars at all and stayed away. I read the car magazines and knew the Renault's were liked in Europe, if they had built their brand here things might have been different here today with them.
I couldn’t afford the insurance on the gt turbo so instead opted for an ax gt. very nice job 👍👍👌
Still an awesome car mate
Nice Shiny Paint Job too!!
Awesome transformation!
Great color!! The wheels look good on it.👍
Nice. Looking. Love. The. Wheels. Fit. It. Good. Work. Brother
You might be able to remove the yellowing on the windshield by using a product called Salon Care 40. People use it to remove yellowing on shoes, action figures, old video game consoles. You apply a thin layer to the surface, cover it with plastic wrap, and leave it in the sun for a while.
I like these videos. It makes me look to see if I have the car . And can't wait to see what it turns out like when you are done.
That 5 looks just like one i see sometimes here in france and the wheels look like the original 3 lug ones even if they came from a muscle car. The other ones look more suited for a 5 Turbo maxi rally car.
Hearing aid beige! 😂😂😂 love it! Those wheels really remind me of the sort of alloys Renault used to fit to their Gordini variants! Sort of performance spec like a Cosworth? So excellent choice Rob 👍 oh yeah and paint removal on the bodyshell was only 94.82% not 94.83%! Do pay attention 007!!! 😂
Fantastic job great color choice
Hearing-aid-beige. Lovely.
Awesome new look Renault 5 👍
Excellent job, looks great 😍😍
Very nice!! Great job on this custom!!
Looks great!!! My fav. So far!
Nice Job Love The Renault 5 called Le Car Renault in here Puerto Rico & in the U.S. market.😍😎👍
Rob luv the color choice this green is real nice and the rims look like Greger ss job well done
