  • Recorded on Sept. 26. Rania Khalek of Breakthrough News and Zoe Alexandra of @PeoplesDispatch sat down with Cuba’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs at the close of the UN General Assembly. They talked about the terrorist attack that had just taken place on the Cuban embassy in Washington DC, the impact of Cuba’s inclusion on the state sponsor of terrorism list, accusations that the Chinese built a spy base in Cuba, and more.

They just turned down a trade deal with my country, the UK, turning their noses at us. The UK, after all the times we backed the US. Also, when a US woman ran into and killed a young Scottish man she fled to the US, And the US refuses to send her back to face trial. Even though she admitted she did it and make a mistake. He faces no justice, unlike any UK citizen who would have done this, they would have faced possible jail. US citizen gets away with it.

In the (True) words of Malcolm X: "Show me a Capitalist and I'll show you a Bloodsucker."
"Social murder is a term coined by Friedrich Engels in 1845 in one of his seminal works, 'The Conditions of the Working Class in England'.
“When one individual inflicts bodily injury upon another such that death results, we call the deed manslaughter; when the assailant knew in advance that the injury would be fatal, we call his deed murder. But when society places hundreds of proletarians in such a position that they inevitably meet a too early and an unnatural death, one which is quite as much a death by violence as that by the sword or bullet; when it deprives thousands of the necessaries of life, places them under conditions in which they cannot live - forces them, through the strong arm of the law, to remain in such conditions until that death ensues which is the inevitable consequence - knows that these thousands of victims must perish, and yet permits these conditions to remain, its deed is murder just as surely as the deed of the single individual; disguised, malicious murder, murder against which none can defend himself, which does not seem what it is, because no man sees the murderer, because the death of the victim seems a natural one, since the offence is more one of omission than of commission. But murder it remains.” Engels used the term social murder to describe how living and working conditions of English workers caused their premature death. Engels argued that since those responsible for these conditions - the ruling class or the bourgeoisie - were aware of the conditions that caused premature death, they were therefore committing social murder."
“You assist an evil system most effectively by obeying its orders and decrees. An evil system never deserves such allegiance. Allegiance to it means partaking of the evil. A good person will resist an evil system with his or her whole soul.” - Mahatma Gandhi

Carlos Fernandez de Cossio doesn't mention that even though Bill Clinton endorsed the Torricelli Act during his 1992 presidential election as an electoral trick to break the GOP grip on the Cuban American vote failed to win him the state of Florida. On the other hand, JFK and LBJ framed their anti-Castro stance through foreign policy interests, not through winning Florida.
Almost all the Cuban exile militants who tried to topple Fidel Castro died long ago, and some Cuban American/Cuban exile activists who switched gears in the 1990s and began advocating non-violence and civil disobedience to call for the end of Fidel Castro's rule simply regard Luis Posada Carriles and Orlando Bosch as simply martyrs who were willing to fight for their cause.

These questions were very curated. It is true that US policy towards Cuba has been unnecessarily aggressive and has helped create a lot of misery within Cuba. But it is also true that US aggression is the favorite excuse to justify the shortcomings of the Cuban government and their own oppression of the Cuban people. Throwing people in prison with sentences of up to 30 years for protesting in the streets against them, for example, is a little too much. Forcing farmers to sell their crops to the government at ridiculously low prices that do not cover for cost and punishing them for selling their produce directly to market; sending medical doctors, athletes and other professionals abroad under contract with foreign governments, then taking 80 percent of their salaries and holding their families as hostages in the island so they don't "betray" them by staying abroad, etc, etc, etc, are some of the reasons so many Cubans that love their country and even recognize the righteousness of their cause, run away from Cuba. They unnecessarily make life harder for whoever tries to actually produce anything of economic value within their system. Along with that comes of course, the usual nepotism, like, the family members of the ruling class do escape all the suffering the common people deal with. Much of the pain felt in the Cuban economy is self-inflicted thanks to their mediocrity and short-sighted policies. Take, for example, the fact that us, Cubans who live abroad, are thought of and treated as enemies by the Cuban government. Is that necessary? Does that help advance their cause? Like, imagine Mexico considering Mexican-Americans as traitors. Really? None of this diminishes the fact that yes, US policy towards Cuba has been atrocious and unnecessarily adversarial and I honestly don't blame them for standing up to the US. Small countries next to great superpowers have always a lot of hard decisions to take related to their neighbors.

Here’s a fun thought. Cuba claims to be Marxist state, and was run by those educated by Marxist thought, and advised by Soviet advisors. The same occurred in the Eastern Bloc in Europe, including the USSR itself.
Yet those economies have collapsed, and been replaced by liberal market capitalism. In most of Eastern Europe, the hard left is minuscule in terms of political power. No one is seriously advocating for that system to return. Few people call for communism and socialism’s return.
Yet somehow, people keep believing that Cuba would be wealthy, if only it were not for that darn embargo. That every other socialist economy has either collapsed or reformed is irrelevant to Breakthrough news. It’s strange, living as the child of Macedonians, to see so many fall for this idea.
Cuba isn’t even an industrial power. Sugar and tourism are their main economic drivers. At least in Europe, they could claim to have the power to build. Yet 60 years on, the state never built effective industries, never developed the infrastructure to support an economy of scale. It’s being beaten out by the Dominican Republic, who through business-friendly democratic policy have encouraged investment and local activity in the economy since the 1990s. It took until 2018, scarcely a decade ago, for Cuba to even allow citizens to own private property.
But naw, it’s just the embargo. Stupid Americans.

    Mr.Fernandez just few points,
    1) Not sure base on what documents you are saying that US Government have told foreign citizens they are not allowed to travel to Cuba???!!!!
Even US Government is not stoping own citizens to go to Cuba.
Base on the US sanction against Cuba , the US citizens can travel to Cuba, but they are limited of spending money in Cuba.
I have traveled few times to Cuba back on year2000&2001
Actually my last trip was on year 2001, and my return ticket was day of Sept.12.2001( one day after 911 terorist attack), my flight got canceled , and I had to stay few days over to fly back to the US via Mexico DF.
When I got back I heared need to get permit to travel to Cuba, so I called several government offices related to this matter, all of them told me there is no such permit or needed.
So, I think there is no such US government restrictions for anyone traveling to Cuba,
Some countries citizens such as Iran, Syria,.... if they have been in Cuba they get questioned more, the reason is security purpose.
    Mis Rana Khalek:
I am not sure if you think people of Cuba are happy with Economy and Cuban government political situation why you dont travel there and interview the people!!!!!!
    Could you stop your BS.please.Thanks
Mr. Fernandez,You are saying countries with less population imigrant more than Cuba to the US or abroad!!!!!
Mr. Fernandez could Cuba government allow people to freely choose to get their Pasport and imigrant anywhere if they can afford to pay for their trips????!!!!
Please allow me to ask you another question Mr. Fernandez,
Could you please let me know why 20Years young man married to 50years old French Turist women???!!!!
I know why, because I asked him, do you know what was his answer?

Keep in mind Cuba is facing a similar level of growing inequality as it privatizes industries. When you 'forbid' people to protest then you can't lecture other people on freedom. Cuba's own leaders with their growing inequality don't help matters much. When you see what poor people live like in Cuba and what rich people live like, there is a similar contrast to the US.
That said, there is really no doubt about the history of the US foreign policy, and if people missed it, Haiti had a democratically elected president who was kidnapped by the US adn overthrown when he raised the minimum wage by a nickel.
The US has largely run the country since, and even forbids that presidents PARTY from running in elections. They literally say that no political alternative is even ALLOWED to run in elections.
And if you haven't seen what Haiti has turned into lately, go check it out.
