I really like to use Plastilina, oil-based clay, for it's re-usability. I have not really had a problem releasing it the mak from the mold. I use petroleum jelly sometimes, that requires cleaning with detergent, but sometimes, I use dishwashing soap as the release.

I like the sulphur-free oil based clay…l don’t remember the brand. I aim the hose of a bonnet style hair dryer into the pieces in the bowl they live in, and warm it up. Aluminum foil as a release, because it can be made very smooth, and adheres to the clay, then a coat of Dawn, allowed to dry, for paper maché,

if my clay is too stiff, I put a lump of it under a warm lamp to soften it.
