As graphic designers, we are to be masters of clear communication. If we are using style and design technique incorrectly than our messages will become lost in translation. Consider this point…
If you use Alexander Rodchenko’s work as inspiration for your design promoting freedom and diversity than you will be sending the completely wrong message with the style you are using.
If graphic design history Alexander Rodchenko design work in Russia during heavy communist reign. His work promoted the communist movement and was known as Constructivism. When you understand this you will make sure to always use the inspiration your glean from graphic design history correctly.

Hey Ben, the image you used at 13:25 - the part where you mentioned Chinese moveable type - that image is actually Korean. I really enjoy your presentation, as a self-taugh graphic designer this kind of material is so helpful to me. Thank you for the great work!
yes my sentiments exactly, I turned it back just to see those familiar hangul letters just to be sure. I enjoyed the lecture nonetheless
没错
I have a final in a course called "History of Graphic Design" and the final is to make a timeline of the history of graphic design, from cave paintings up till the present. I am watching your video now, but had to comment how thankful I am. Thank youuu for taking the time to film this very informative video. I will send this video to my classmates! ❤️
Thank you so much for the great content Ben. I'm actually so glad that I found this video. Totally agree about the learning of the history of graphic design. I always feel like it is one of the most crucial fundamentals of being a great graphic designer. You have to understand what you are doing & saying. Again thank you for making such a great video!
Thank you for uploading this! I am teaching myself and free resources like this make me feel like I'm actually in design school! You are so wholesome and easy to learn from too!
My brother, I cannot express to you how grateful I am for this huge amount of knowledge that you have presented in this video. Continue, my friend, what you are providing is great.
Thank you for video! I am newly studying graphic design at TAFE (Australian term for vocational colleges) and have found it to be quite helpful and enjoyable to watch.
Very helpful. I live in Switzerland and didn't knew how much impact the designers from this country had. Will help me a lot for my future career
😱😲👏👏👏👏Hallelujah! You are a true legend in the design community. Never thought someone would be kind enough to dedicate this much time and effort into creating such great value. Hope bigger creators consider giving this some shine. This was kind of astonishing for me since I visited your channel after a long time. The numbers will catch up Mr. Kaiser.🙏
Hey Phil! Good to see you on the channel. I am stoked you appreciated the effort it took to put together this video. It was definitely a lot of thought and planning.
Thanks for the encouragement.
Really loved this video. I am about to go down a research rabbit hole to learn more about the movements and designers you introduced here. I didnt go to art school when I was young because I bought into the belief that I would regret going for the rest of my life. Now I am in my late 20s and there is nothing about my teens I regret more than not choosing art school, go figures 🤷
Its never too late 😅
Thank you so much my friend. This helped me a lot preparing for my final exams! :)
thank you so much for sharing that precious knowledge for free ! i'm about to start graphic design studies and this presentation + your tech advices help me so MUCH 💜
ps : i just wanted to correct something in the quote u talked about earlier in the presentation : "I see further only because I stand on the shoulders of giants" is actually from Isaac Newton from 1675 📖 voila!
hey, really appreciate this video:) just one thing I want to mention is where you're explaining about Typography around 00:14:00, the example is Korean not Chinese. It's Hangeul that's our own alphabet invented by King Sejong.
thanks man for this video I developed immense love for graphic design in lockdown period I was looking for something like this. Kudos! love from india🙏
Thank you for this presentation. As a university graduate, I missed the chance to explore graphic design and get a degree in it and even though this is a brief session on graphic design history, it takes me back when I hear a well thought out presentation.
Thanks for this overview! Just starting out my journey into graphic design and this was a nice little dip into the history of it all.
Thank you so much for this video! I can now teach my students the brief history of graphic design without boring them (yes!)
So stoked! What class are you teaching?
This is a great video. I am a graphic design teacher who is an artist that never went to school for Graphic Design.I found this so helpful!!
So stoked you found this so helpful.
Thanks for this!! I am changing career to graphic design and learning his story has been fascinating to me! Thanks a lot for this!
* The quote “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
its from Isaac Newton (not Thomas Edison)
No, actually is a bit older, medieval. Commonly Bernard of Chartres. But is a bit more complicated: you can Google it.
Extremely helpful for an insight on design history which has always confused me, thankyou!
So stoked you found this brief history helpful!
I really needed this. Very insightful and informative!!! Great work.
Thank you, please make more videos about design history or approach, it would help many graphic design students.
13:24 by the way this isn't Chinese. This image is a metal type made by middle age Koreans.
Hey man, quick question. could I use bits of your videos/lesson for my class.
I teach a graphic design course and due to the whole quarantine in NYC all schools are closed.
I will love to teach the history of Graphic design since my kids don't have access to Adobe programs at home. Thank you very much.
Yes, feel free to do so.
Tanks for the wonderful teaching I loved
Your intro was on point. I needed this.

So stoked you liked the video!
Really instructive video, thank you!
Great video, I enjoyed it and it was worth the effort you put in. I'm surprised it doesn't have more views I will be sharing. Btw,the "shoulders of giants" quote was by Isaac Newton, a bone fide genius.
Thanks for the support and encouragement! I am so stoked you enjoyed the video!
Newton, eh? Got it!
Very well organized and informative .. Thanks 🤘 I see what you did there with the look of yours, compared to your other videos .. Cool.. Like Helvetica to Garamond .. Haha 😀
Thanks for the support and you kind words.
Glad you noticed the subtle font usage in the thumbnail as well. :)
This is what I’ve been looking for! Thank you!!!
I am so stoked this video met your needs! Thanks for the comment.
What did you like most about the Brief walkthrough?

Bro you looked tired, and I don't blame you😅 this has helped me a lot thanks👍
Thank you beng for your video, I really needed something like this
very helpful and organized. thanks a lot
Highly informative. Thank you!
You're most welcome. Thanksfor the comment.
Great video, I just want to make one correction that I haven't seen others mention. When you said the German Bauhaus designers were kicked out of Germany, you switched from saying Nazis to Communist. The Nazis were not communist, they were fighting the communists in Russia and they jailed and deported socialists and communists, of which many Bauhaus members were (which is why they were persecuted).
Thank you, you educate me🙏🌱
Oh man! Amazing! Much appreciate! :-)
Thank you so much Ben, for sharing that much of Design History and Knowledge , I really need to know the roots of design for my study and practice.
So stoked you found this so helpful!
@@BenGKaiser is there any platform where I can see your design works ??

Question: What is the brand of the cup you are sipping from in the beginning of the video?
Im looking into a career as a graphic designer. Im trying to learn with out a degree or to start a degree some day. Right mow im learning and learning a lot

So stoked this helped you out! What are you interviewing for?
@@BenGKaiser fine arts university graphic design department! 😊
At 36:50 "The Swimmer," by Italian artist Giulio d'Anna belongs to the Futurism art movement and not Cubism. Thanks for putting so much time into this but its fundamental that you review the video for mistakes.
Thanks for this information.
Great informational 👍
very surprised to see "dislikes" on such an amazing video... strange !
Heyyy a quick question I’m a student can you tell me what is the summary of the history of graphic design? I hope you can answer this... THANK YOUU
Thanks man!!
I think the actual language of the “chinese” moveable type at 13:50 is Korean (Hangul) rather than Chinese. I recognize some shapes from when I was there last summer. Just FYI should you use this powerpoint/keynote again. Now I’ll keep watching this interesting summary. :)
Yes, that was a mistake that has caught many eyes... thanks for the comment. I will definitely update the slide for the next time.
@@BenGKaiser Is there a next time? Did you create an updated version? If not, you may want to research the pronunciation of many names. In addition, when you briefly mention other artists in a list, even a small image of their work would help visual learners get more out of it.
Really appreciate your talk on topic
Thanks you
I have a question which are only 3 front you use for a year ?
I am so glad you like the video!
I used Droid Serif, Myriad Pro, and Oswald.
@@BenGKaiser
Front?
Amazing Video
👏 great job excellent
Thank you so much for this. ❤️
So glad you found this so helpful!
Your walkthrough is wonderful. Thank you!
I wish you had included the significance of the Islamic design, the mosque architecture and the symmetric structure and shapes they used which revolutionized style of design.
please can i use the photo resources without copyright or you have one, like tsai lun, adison dwiggns ( historical personality) on my youtube channel
Thank you I found this interesting as a new student of Graphic Design. I did find it a bit frustrating however that there wasn't a lot of mention of female influences! (Barr the obvious Paula Scher)
I’m a female Photography/Graphic Design student who’s in my final year of A Levels in the UK and I’ve searched for female graphic artists from the 30s-80s and I’ve now and then seen them in those decades. I’ve studied and produced similar artwork that male photographers/graphic designers have made such as David Carson, Ed Fairburn, Shepard Fairey, Javier Marro, Wes Browne and Dan Mountford. The female photographers/graphic designers that I’ve studied and produced similar artwork to are Hollie Chastain and Susan Stone.
Love this
Do you have a list of recommended reading?
Is there video on How to work with these
when you're Russian and see a poster from the USSR, this style is so familiar
Thanks so much for this video)
thank u so much
hey mr ben thank u for sharing this with us , and I have just one question , do I really need to read and know about the history of design . cuz I see that it is just to get a background of design no more .
It is up to you how deep of knowledge of your industry you would like. There are many great designers that don't know the histroy, I for one, like to know where my craft came from.
thank u s m , last question pls , do I NEED TO BE GENERAL DESIGNER OR Expert DESIGNER , LIKE I HAVE TO FOCUS IN ONE THING LIKE LOGO DESIGN OR FLYERS OR BOOK COVERS.
Amazing.
BK Thanks! (Spasibo BK!) Спаибо БК!
You are most welcome!
thanks mate
Enjoyed
Awesome video! thank you!
one question: The "typography" picture of individual moving letter blocks, why is it korean? I thought its originated from China
That was my mistake. Good catch.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
great video
Hey, Great video Ben. I used this for a school research project it was very helpful, thank you. I really enjoy your emphasis on the importance of understanding the history, it gave me some insight. Also i would like to know what you think about the psychedelic movement in the 60's? thanks again.
Honestly, I think the psychedelic movement fits more into the art movement. There were a great deal of music album covers, but the design was mostly layout, not the art aspects.
Don't know who made I. Is it Soviet constructivism? Was it for a magazine?
Hmm, I don't know specifically off of the top of my head where this piece was featured.
Thank you. This is very helpful. Also, I think 13:31 is Korean instead of Chinese.
Yes, that was my mistake. Thank you.
Hi, really like the video, but the first cave paintings are from around 30.000 - 20.000 BC
Great video on the history of graphic design ❤ It was Newton's quote, not Edison's.
I think the typesetting board at 13:30 has Korean characters, not Chinese.
Have you started the GD class you announced?
I have decided not to start the class. Please forgive me for any confusion this may have caused.
Nice.
1. Based on bens what the oldest person communication system is how it is?
2. What are the three languages that are the basis for today's communication system
3. What is the current graphic design mecca?
Please anyone help me to answer this asap..thanks
