As a guy who has always played the “new truck” game, I fully advocate for building your own vision of the perfect tow pig. OEM’s design to cover as many end users as they can, so the things you see as super important might be overlooked. Every single thing you want to accomplish with your tow rig can be done through fabrication and aftermarket, then you have the knowledge of how correct it is because you did it yourself. I think you have an excellent starting point in your fummins. That iteration of the Cummins has excellent longevity and reliability as well as aftermarket support, as does the Ford trans. The truck platform is reasonably solid too, with good creature comforts. Build what you have. You’re already 75% done with what a lot of guys would consider the “ultimate tow rig”

We hear stories like yours far too often, which is why we designed the Disaster Prevention Kit and the new DCR Pump Conversion. Thank you for using our DPK diagram in your video to help out other Ford Super Duty owners. You shouldn't have to give up on your dream truck, and they are a dream to drive and tow with. We have a 2016 and a 2021 that we use for development and towing our show trailer cross country. With a DCR Pump Conversion installed in both, we feel great about taking long trips and enjoying the ride. For what it's worth, we have had multiple reports of Ford honoring warranties with our Disaster Prevention Kit installed. If you decide to get another Ford, we can help you solve the CP4 problem so that you can "live the dream!" We can likely help with the Fummins too, if it's common rail.

Both were new and I have been the original owner and I do most of the general work ie; brakes, oil changes, plugs, filters and most common repairs. As I've done everything from rebuilding engines, automatic and standard transmissions, differentials, and axels, I'm like you in watching most mechanical issues. You have the capability to make it exactly what you want and that includes converting it to a manual transmission if that is what you really want at the end of the day. Sure you can go out and buy something shiny and new but haven't we already learned recently enough together maybe that isn't necessarily the best option. When I realized there was no remedy to the "Service DEF See Dealer" issue, I asked the dealership what the timeline was to get the parts to fix my engine and was told, "MONTHS!" Since I use my truck for work... "months" was not an option. Glad to see you got it worked out!!

Similar but different story. I use fuel oil to heat my house and bought my own barrels at 40 bucks a piece to bring it home myself. I bought me a 12-volt Diesel fuel pump at the parts store. A visibly there's a little bit of water in the bottom of the barrel that killed the pump instantly. I tried a second pump and the same result. Not a solution for your car but my solution was to get an aquarium air pump and a t on the siphon hose. I have 150 ft of Polly something or another tubing that carries the oil to the big tank wherever that might be at my storage area. I've had problems moving the oil just because of a little water that couldn't get past the centrifical diesel pump. How one can protect their fuel tank on their trucks from contaminated fuel, just a drop of water will kill the machine.

You are very lucky they covered that repair under warranty. 2020 was a horrible year for injection pump failures, Ram even recalled theIr Cummins trucks and replaced the pumps at no charge to the owner. Most Ford dealers are crooks and will do and say anything to not cover that repair under warranty. I also agree that it would have been better to have a truck not under warranty, then you fix it yourself. I’ve done a handful of these fuel system jobs after the pump failed and I’m confident the job can be done in a day in a parking lot with the right tools and the right people. I think one of the reasons you were fortunate enough to have your dealership write this up as a warrantied repair, is because of your CZcams channel. They probably figured that if they didn't warranty the repairs, as Ford commonly does with these trucks, they would get put on blast for being butt monkeys, and they didn't want to deal with the backlash. As for what to buy next, I know I'm going to be in the market myself, hopefully in the near future, for a diesel pickup, so I'll just tell you what I already have my eyes ready to look at. I'm thinking king cab, long bed, 4X4, Cummins Ram, but it cannot be any newer than 2006 because, I don't want to have to deal with DEF, or any fines for deleting it.

I’ve been around diesel trucks for a long time now and here’s my advice…
We started with a 2001 Ford F250 crew cab long bed 4x4 7.3 5 speed for towing and it was the best truck we could ever ask for. It was slow but very reliable!
Moved onto a 2001 Duramax that was very reliable…until the never ending Injector issues.
2006 Ford F250 6.0 4x4 that’s been a good truck for the most part, but breaks down regularly if I don’t inspect it after every trip and clean the EGR every 10k miles. I’ve had to do a lot of work to it to keep it going, but it’s in great shape and it was well maintained.
I’ve looked at buying a brand new truck, but I constantly see BRAND NEW diesels of all makes stranded on the side of the road with fuel or emissions issues costing thousands to fix.
I am now looking for a 6.4 truck to swap my 12 valve Cummins into that I will be building up for more power. I promise you will not regret keeping the Fummins and running it as your primary tow rig after you improve it. You’ll never find anything better than a Ford truck with a Cummins moving it.

I have always tried to do things the right way, be prepared for everything so nothing happens. I had just had my trailer serviced, new bearings brakes etc. 2 spare tires for the trailer etc. It was a 4 day trip and on the 2nd day one tire fell off. Thankfully it was a 2 axel trailer. But everything I did to prevent any disasters from happening didn't help.
I finally found a trailer repair shop and they determined that who ever did the work on the trailer before I left failed to do it properly. LAST TIME I ever had a repair shop work on my trailers.
    2. Had my F350 transmission beefed up to be able to avoid any issues...2 weeks after the work was done and $6500.00 later it broke down...with less than 1000 miles on it. It took 2 months to get my truck back.
Most guys that have towed for work or play have had an issue at some point in their life. When I say your video, my heart went out to you guys. I relived the pain that you guys went through. The only thing that has ever made any of those experience livable, was the kindness that we got from complete strangers.
My 2 cents: pretrip checks, checks at your destination when you get to where you need to be....try to get there early, checks before you leave and again when you get home. And regular maintenance.
I've had too many friends who waited till the night before the track days to find out they had issues with the truck or trailer.

Thank you for the update to your breakdown. You just stopped me from making a huge mistake. I was going tomorrow to put offer on 2020 f350 w/ 50k miles. The cp4 issue popped up yesterday in my investigation. I said it must not be that bad if Ford is still using...I think I was wrong. I've been reading horror stories the last 24 hours and then your video pops up. I've never seen your channel. But glad I did today!!!
Now I'm back to square one. I was originally looking at Rams only. Because of Cummins. But the new ones have me walking away...guess I'll get me a team of horses! Thanks again.

I did the same thing with my 2021 F350 Dually, I just didnt trust the cp4. It was showing some sign of premature failure. You made the right choice

Fummins, you have already put so much time and effort into that truck, you know you have done a high-quality build, just finish the job and make it perfect. You won't regret it.

Keep what you have you can’t beat the Cummins I’m 76 years young I’ve had the ford 6.9 7.3 and 3 Cummins 5.9 6.7 1995/2002/2004/2012 and 51 years of 18 wheeler car hauling. Been there done that.

I would keep the fummins wrap the trailer black with a Garage Built style graphic and polish the chrome and aluminum. I've watched your channel in silence for a long time now not missing 1 video in about 2 years I just wanted to say I appreciate your videos and your knowledge 💪🏻 keep up the hard work TR!

The Fummins is the ultimate tow rig and you already have it and have put a ton of time and money into that truck plus it was built frame up by you so you know that truck inside and out and the ability to get parts at any of the parts houses across the country is also a win if your out of state. Keep building that truck to your liking and it will take care of you.

Yes sir everything breaks down or can break down at any given time. Nice to know the problem with the truck.

Thanks for posting this. I am looking for a truck to pull a big trailer and had no idea the new trucks were like this. I greatly appreciate you honesty.

    Chris to the rescue. Legend.
Your medium term plan sounds like the best: get the transmission sorted on the Fummins and a few other not so costly things and start using it, while gathering all the info on the alternatives. Then in a few months time you'll know what you want to end up with.

You have the perfect tow rig. What is stopping you right now from hooking it up and going to an event? Maintenance?... bet you could do it without even doing that. We need more people like Chris.

Rides like shit and has electrical problems. Can’t even leave the battery in the truck.

Seems like more than anything you hated the warranty since it limits you. You should have just had the truck fixed since it was covered under warranty and put the CP4 Disaster Kit plus a delete. Truck would be bullet proof and lasted a long time.
If you keep the Funmings change out the wheels ASAP to something better. Truck will ride, handle, brake, and get improved mpg so much better.

Honestly if you can upgrade the fummins in the comfort area, that's my vote. Like you said, you know every nut and bolt on that truck so fixing it if it did break down would be quicker and easier. The only thing that would sway my vote towards a cummins would be the manual transmission
