  • This time of year my pasture that I turn the horses out in to graze is really sparse from the horses eating the grass down to nothing. So my husband and I have been doing a lot of research to see if we can make the pasture look like a pasture again. And while there is a lot of information, most of it isn't really helpful! So, we are testing out what we have learned, and trying to get more grass in our pasture.
    I bought alfalfa seed and dryland prairie grass seed. Then I got the ground ready, used a broadcast spreader to throw out the seed, added some peat moss to protect it, raked and and drug the ground, and all that was left to do was water. Time will tell if it works! I sure hope it does, that was a lot of work! But we're not done yet, we have to make sure and keep the ground wet and keep the horses out of the pasture until the seeds turn into grass. I hope it turns into grass....
    Be sure to subscribe to my channel, and come back in a coupe of weeks to see how the pasture is doing! Hopefully it will be green, instead of brown!

    I have a 15 acre pasture for 5 horses and the way we keep it looking nice and green is... Roll a hay bale out (a 500 lbs round bale) to seed it in winter- spring, we go thorough about 75(ish)+ rolls per winter. We bushhog it once a year. And then fertilize it in the early spring with some super amazing stuff (not sure what it is since my dad is over all that) and usually within 4 days it's a luscious green color! Also it is safe for cattle and equine so I don't worry about it. Thankfully it isn't a hard process at all. Our pasture is a mix of alfalfa, orchard, Timothy, and a few other breeds of grass. So my horses have plenty of choices to choose from lol.

    I have a irrigated but small pasture 2.5 acres, I think it would be to much work to seed by hand. So I use my manure spreader. It beats the manure up into very small pieces, think of poop snow. I add a scoop of seed every time I spread the manure. Works very well. Good luck with your pasture. It should do well until winter. I live in northern Nevada, so know how hard It is to keep a good pasture.

    Great idea for a video series Lisa! Concerned horse owners want to know if it can be done! Thanks!

    We should send some rain your way from MN because we have all green fields from all the rain this year. But, I can't wait to see the follow up video. I also love when you had an audience with your boys watching. 😍

    Oh wow. Super small area for 2 horses. I have about 4 acres for 2 draft horses. Reviving a pasture is not easy or cheap. We spray weed control every spring, seed, fertilize and lime over winter and again in spring. We don’t have a sacrificial dry lot so we rotate 2 weeks on 2 weeks rest. That’s the most important. Also... I WISH my weeds came up that easy! We also don’t have a tractor, but we have a plugger and an ATV... we use what we have. A tractor would be SO much help for sure! Lol great video to show people you can bring a bad lot back to life.

    Hope it works! Everyone's fields are pretty dry this year, even ours is a couple acres and its completely dead as well. If yours works I might try too. If not next year for sure!

    Can’t find part 2 but wondering how it all went?
    Do you rotate their pastures so you don’t get unhealthy horse sick land or do you just reseed every year?

    Nice music. Do you have enough acreage to put your horses into a new section every other month? If the horses stay off for 8 weeks, your grass roots have time to go loooong

    Although this video is a couple years old, but I'll say what might help you is, 1 do soil samples if you ph is high? Then grass won't grow as well so you would need lime to sweeten the ground. 2 spread your horses waste, after its composted if you can? 3 try to rotate your horses so there not constantly overly grazing the same pasture. But that's my opinion.

    Can i use weed killer instead of pull up weeds. Then tend to keep breaking off and roots stay

    • @BudgetEquestrian
      @BudgetEquestrian  Před rokem

      I wouldn't use weed killer, but I'm a fraidy cat lol. I always worry that there will be some residual and then my horses may accidentally eat some.
