  • The Israel Woodwind Quintet performs the Quintet in Eb Major, Op. 88, #2, for Winds by Anton Reicha in 1968.
The Israel Woodwind Quintet performed and recorded from the late 1960's to the early 1990's. Drawn from the principal players of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, in its established form, the quintet consisted of Uri Shoham, flute, Eliahu Thorner, oboe, Richard Lesser, clarinet, Meir Rimon, French horn and Mordechai Rechtman, bassoon. In addition to performing the traditional and modern quintet repertoire, the Israel Woodwind Quintet specialized in music by Israeli composers and music by J.S. Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, as transcribed by its bassoonist, Mordechai Rechtman.

Reicha has become one of my favorite composers. He surpasses many of the so-called greats--I won't name names. I never knew how beautiful the horn was. I do believe the Czechs have produced some of the best music, both in terms of composers and performers.

I agree that Czech music and musicians are often neglected. Performers and broadcasters pay much more attention to Italians. Other than Dvořák and Smetana what other names of Czech composers can the average concert goer or listener to classical recordings or broadcasts name? And in the case of Dvořák the majority of those who recognize his name likely know only of one of his symphonies, No. 9, "From the New World." Even dedicated opera lovers are unlikely to know his "Rusalka," despite the Met's having given it a fine production a few years ago and its having been included in the series of operas broadcast this season on Saturday afternoons in the US.

Erfrischende und erleuchtende Musik von Antonin Reicha ist zauberhaft: ich setzte mich zu hören mit der Schwere in der Seele - stand aber auf mit Freude ! Ist das nicht die Magie ? Tepper Michael.

I've heard this combo of instruments before, but never knew anything about it. Just learned in Music Literature at Pensacola State about the Woodwind Quintet. The Bassoon in the back thumpin'. The flutes chirping like birds. Makes me want to have a romantic picnic.

I just discovered Reicha a couple months ago and I'm obsessed. i love his music. trying to find comprehensive recordings of his quintets and symphonies etc. If anyone knows how to locate scores for his symphonies I'd be very interested.

You could try IMSLP online; they might just have something by Reicha.

Try A Midsummer Night's Dream, overture, Op.21 at the very beginning.
