I always thought Yaquis were in the same category as mexicas? I was told I am Yaqui and I hold that dear to my heart. I'm moving to Guadalupe next year and I just wanted to ask how would the Yaqui tribe treat my family and I when we move there? I really want my kids to follow in the Yaqui traditions. Even though I'm on the red road trying to fit in with my people I hope and pray for peace and unity. From Alaska to Argentina we are one!

Heyyy, my aunt Betsy lived right behind this church building. I remember stomping around barefooted around there. For me, the ground was white sand and I can still feel the comfort and the coolness of it on my feet. I was 8 years old and I felt so free here. Wished I could of told my aunt Betsy "Thank You". B"H

He came to US when he was 6. I am now living in Chandler, AZ and I would like to attend the Catholic Church in Guadalupe. The Yaquis of Guadalupe originally came to Tempe, Arizona Territory, circa 1870's. They lived west of the railroads tracks and first street in Tempe circa, 1900. It included land owned by Rafael Martinez 1856, who sold it to the Gonzales family, that started The Cahill Construction Company and S.L. Cahill Construction Company. The City of Tempe wanted "The Yaqui People" moved, so my great grandfather, Maricopa County Deputy Sheriff for Tempe, Rafael Estrada Castro(a Yaqui) moved "the Yaqui People" between Priest and Mckemy and Broadway Road to 13th Street, to his personal property. In 1910, my great grandfather, Rafael Estrada Castro was elected Maricopa County Constable for Tempe and during the following years 1910-1918, the City of Tempe wanted "The Yaqui People" moved again. This period was when the first church and graveyard were by the San Francisco Canal, same as current location of the Yaqui Cemetery in Tempe. Maricopa County wanted to take all the land from the Yaqui People. So, Constable Rafael Estrada Castro moved them to the current location called "la Cuadenta". Forty acres of land that had been previously rented from Mrs. Higgins, by the Estrada Family. Constable Rafael Estrada Castro worked with Mrs. Higgins and she agreed to give the land to "The Yaqui People". Subsequently, my grandfather Pedro "Pete" Noriega Estrada(a Yaqui) and a local school teacher Miss Andrade begin fighting Maricopa County Courts to make sure the land would stay in the hands of "The Yaqui People", not the tribe. My grandfather Pedro "Pete" Noriega Estrada continued this battle as he became a Maricopa County Court Interpreter in 1923 and later in 1958, Chief Law Librarian and Director of the Maricopa County Court Law Library. There is a Park named after him in Tempe, Arizona off of Warner Road and McClintock Road. Rafael Estrada Castro and his mother-in-law Antonia Salas Gonzales Noriega and his wife Rafaela Noriega Salas Estrada are buried in the Guadalupe Yaqui Cemetery of Tempe. As well as my great grandfather Sacarias Cahill Gonzales and his wife Genoveva Davila Apolina Gonzales. They are all Yaqui.

The irony of Porfirio Díaz, discriminatory against First Nations, sending Yaquis to Yucatan as slaves and Mayans to Northern Mexico, when he himself was indigenous, of the Tya Nyu(Mixtec) and then he goes and creates a fund for the indigenous people of Mexico which expires now! Its good these Yaqui found a better life in Arizona.

He wanted the land and its resources to make mexico part of the first world. The yaquis just wouldn't cooperate, so removal became the solution. Porfido was a contration himself like you said. Help beer become the alcohol of choice instead of pulque. Made people dress like europeans and not like Peasants. Tried to restructure mexico city to model Paris and other European cities but also created the Raza cosmica identity and love pre-Columbian sites. A total contradiction.
