    I appreciate that you took special care to mention that certain features only work at certain settings, like “this only works if you're mac is set to English”, that way I can curve my expectations when I go out looking for the feature. Other settings and functions might only work in certain regions and content creators ignore them.

    Great video👍. A small suggestion which I think will help many is to create short videos feature-wise. For example, if I want to get a quick update on how to use "undo send" I will have to go through many videos entirely. A short video which says "Undo feature in Apple Mail" will be so easy to search. Thanks for all your effort. Much appreciated.

    Great job Gary, as usual. For me this is great on my iPad and iPhone however I have these features on my MAC via Mail butler through a lifetime purchase I got a while back. I’m surprised that apple took so long to add these features but better late than never.
    LoL Gary always includes those little details that everyone else leaves out. I was searching like crazy for whether or not your device could be asleep when it comes to the send later feature/schedule

  • @zoulhhh
    @zoulhhh Před rokem +8

    It's a shame Apple does not support reminders as soon as you move an e-mail out ouf the inbox. I will never understand this. A nice feature totally messed up. Same the follow-up feature. You're right Gary, thanks for the video.

    • @scottsegal7631
      @scottsegal7631 Před rokem +1

      Agreed completely. Re: Remind Me feature…Outlook for iOS does a much better job at this and handles it the obviously intelligent way - moves the message out of your inbox until you want the reminder, then the message reappears at the top. The least apple could do is let you Archive the message but KEEP the reminder active, which then moves it back to the top of your inbox. I want Mail to be my primary app, but it’s hard to give up outlook, which also lets you turn on notifications by mail account. I have about 5 mails accounts linked to both outlook and mail. I only want reminders for one of those accounts, which outlook does for me. For now, I still need both mail clients to get what I want: Apple Mail and Outlook. I think Apple underestimates the importance of having their apps be the best. When you use apple apps you have the most seamless experience with all of the ‘services’ apple operating systems offer. In spite of that, sometimes you have to sacrifice seamlessness to get the functionality you want, which makes Apple products less compelling vs. the competition.

    Yeah, the follow-up and reminder me is pretty useless especially when you practice inbox zero. I find the 3rd party plug-in Mailbutler does this very well while retaining the UI of the Mac mail app.

  • @thesisko3715
    @thesisko3715 Před rokem +1

    Nice summary of the new features, most of these look really useful and it looks like Mail has caught up a bit (though not completely) to competitor apps like Outlook and GMail. I also appreciate that you are critical of the new features that aren’t so great-always good to have an honest review. Apple doesn’t always get it right after all, some new features need tweaking, changes, or just plain don’t work.

  • @bea492g7

    Is it possbale to send an email with check boxes? I want to send a feedback email and I know my clients are busy so I thought some preworded check boxes that they could check off and reply/send back would save them time and improve my response rate - a bit like a quick questionaire within the email. I do not see a way to do this. Is it possable?
    Also, I used to love "Stationery" in Mac Mail and thought it was a huge step backward when they removed it. Is there anyway now to send a "pretty" email via Mail ?
    Last question.... Do any of the new Mail updates inclue the ability to see if/when a person opened an email ??
    I find your instructions clear, concise and Very helpful. Many Thanks

    • @macmost
      @macmost  Před rokem

      No, you can't put a form in an email like that. Create a form online using a service, and send an email with a link.
      How many "clients" do you have? If you have more than a handful, then you should probably be using an email service, not personal email. Such services would also allow for templates and HTML email messages that look "pretty."
      You cannot see when a person opens an email message because email standards don't include such a thing. Email is a standard supported by thousands of different services and they would all need to agree for something like that to work. Many (like Apple) go the other way and prevent tracking tricks from reporting back that the email was loaded. This is considered a violation of privacy. So no solutions you see out there from services are 100%.

  • @candleby
    @candleby Před rokem

    Thanks, Gary. Good clip as usual. I really like your no nonsense approach! Like you I found some of the new features rather underwhelming. Here is something I would really appreciate: attachments added to the header section rather than randomly thrown into the body of the email (or where your cursor just happens to be). It is an absolute mystery to me why Apple is not capable of fixing something that basic.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  Před rokem

      But would all email clients on the other end know what to do with those? (honestly, I don't know). I try as much as I can to avoid any attachments to email (I think they are rude when you know people could be getting email while out on their phones).

    • @candleby
      @candleby Před rokem

      @@macmost Hm, in my line of work attachments are a daily occurance (and far from being rude). As far as other email clients are concerned, I have only Outlook and a couple of other clients to go by, but they keep attachments separate from the body of text. Maybe, I am missing something here, but I would invite others to chime in here.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  Před rokem

      The Mail app doesn't have any templates. Hard to suggest an alternative without knowing more about what you need. As for having email look the same, I'm not sure what you are looking for there. How are they different? And keep in mind that the recipient will see an email differently depending on the device, app and settings on their end. Someone reading it on their phone with image turned off will see it differently than someone on a desktop computer, etc.

    The reminder function doesn't work at all, it doesn't take the mail from your mailbox it just put's it to the top after an hour, yeah... great function. I use apple mail because it's the only mail app that integrates with the rest of the Mac, but I find it very basic and a kind of disappointing that Apple is just fully focused on hiding everything and make things look as plane as possible. People are actually working on these machines make features that do not just work with iCloud or in 1 language, create functions that are handy, make Apple mail the best client there is. Gmail in Chrome is ugly as hell, but man it works so fast and it's really focused on people that work and do something.

I start off composing my e-mail and then find I want to attach a photo, so I click on the Paper Clip expecting to be able to select the PHOTO button (have all my photo's displayed) and then select the photo I want to attach. But the minute I select the photo button it starts attaching my entire photo library. It all but locks up my mac. what am I doing wrong?

      Not sure why you are seeing that. I try it and I clicked the paperclip, then chose Photos from the left sidebar, then clicked a photo, then the Choose Photo Button at the bottom.

    I really, really hope we got a better mail app, before the mars gets populated.
    Still no templates for mails you send often. Still no feature to silence incoming newsletters. Mails you set as „remind me“ are staying in the inbox. Still not the same features on MacOS and iOS (why we don’t get smart folders on iOS???) etc….
    I did send feedback to Apple a couple of times, but I think it’s more effective to teach a dolphin to speak. But maybe I’m underestimating the dolphins….

      What you do to troubleshoot depends on your mail service, how you have it set up, and other factors. Call Appel Support so they can work directly with you.

      Remove all VIPs. So go to an email addressed from the first VIP, click on the from address at the top, and remove the VIP status. Repeat with the rest.

      If I’m not mistaken, on iOS 16 there is an actual remind me notification that pops up from mail. I could be wrong but I’m quite sure of it. It seems strange that this wasn’t integrated into Ventura.

      @@thesisko3715 I just tested this on iOS, and yes, I get a notification on my lock screen. I do wish they had just implemented a standard snooze function though, as not moving mail out of the Inbox until needed is a big shortcoming.

      My battery usage is still about ¼ what it was under Monterey. I’ve been told by several that it’s just a temporary thing, that it will normalize after all files are indexed… but it’s been days, machine on for days and still short battery life. I used to be able to work outside for 6-8 hours, now it’s like 2 or 3 hours.

      @macmost  Před rokem +1

      Erin: Are you letting your Mac sleep or do you shut it down? If you shut down, it doesn't get to do the maintenance it needs to do. After a day or two you shouldn't notice any difference in battery unless you are also doing something else different on your Mac.

    ☠BLACK BARON☠ The UI was better before ... now the search bar is on the right and the "Where to search in which mailbox or mailboxes or inboxes" is on the left. 🙈 Kaputt developed 🙈 ... Honestly, Apple has a lack of skilled user interface designers. That's my opinion.

    still unusable. Deleting a message makes the focus jump to the next email, marking it read instantly. I overlooked/forgot about countless important emails due to this 'feature'. Have been sending them requests to improve this, no success. Will continue with Spark, as this is no issue there. Whatever more or less useful feature they bring, I can't use Mac Mail as long as this doesn't get fixed.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  Před rokem

      Using Spark is a fine option if that is really critical to you. Myself, I consider anything in my Inbox as something I still need to take action on, and then I move things to Archive when I am done with them. So my Inbox is "deal with" and Archive is "dealt with." Read/Unread I don't care about.
