And that is what I love most about Melle Mel. He will not sugarcoat his message to sound more palatable to the new generation of listeners.
Truthfully, he has always been a staunch critic of the rap game. Hell, he dissed the Sugar Hill Gang and Run DMC, so he's not just partial and biased towards the old school.

Nothing but praise and respect for Melle Mell. What he's saying is dead on BUT as a young female in the 80s. I related to Queen Latifah, Salt/Peppa ams MC Lyte. Although Lyte was hard-she made me harder which actually helped me survive these streets and i could relate to what she was sayin.. "I still ♡ a Rough Neck" ; ). Melle Met my daughter a few weeks ago and it was one of my proudest moments when he and my child spoke of the Todays Hip Hop-and real hip hop-she was so educated and up on True School Rap and where Hip Hop started and it's demise.. He was very impressed and so was I♡

Understand, he's not talking about those artist you mentioned. Those females were very lady like with just enough edge to let you know they could go there. Many female rappers as well as female singers of today are anything but lady like. As a result, many of our young girls following them are becoming just as hard....if not harder than the boys.

I miss when Hip Hop had true diversity in styles. It forced it to grow and expand and change communities and now it is forced to copy & dumb down and tear away at the very fabric that built it. what was once intricate and inspiring is now a chase for money, popularity and trends which produces a lot of manufactured music without true expression and feeling. Hip Hop as we hear it in the mainstream is numb!!!

It has been misused, abused to promote unnecessary violence within the community. Heavy duty thoughts being presented.

If it wasnt in such a rush, chances are he would have broken things down to a core. Kats just have to stfu and listen well on how times were back then and how we can all use his and many other practitioners(not only in Rap) experiences as a lesson to learn.....think about it. peace from Puerto Rico

On that gang $h!t, Ive been saying what Mel saying for years w/ the NY Hip Hop scene. Originally Hip Hop eliminated the gang culture in NY which innovated the creative process. Now lyrically the culture gave rebirth to the Gang culture where the created process has diminished and that's where NY lost it's edge. We went @ss backwards. And to add insult to injury we added that LA Blood and Crip $h1t to the NY scene. I'm as fukd up as you Mel!!!

Truth spoken. I like how he shut down that ol tired excuse of "this is what they see so they rap about it".
Need another strong political type group of people like the 'Ghetto Brothers' again. Them dudes stopped gang violence and hip hop culture became something born out of it for the black and brown (and whoever else) people there. And now look at hip hop. I honestly feel it's too late to save it. It's gone, man. Too many knuckle heads now that's willing to use messages in rap to destroy people to get money. They don't care bout no hip hop no more. It's been going in the wrong direction since the late 80's/early 90's. And you can walk a long ways in 30 years.
I haven't listened to any mainstream hip hop or music in over 10 years. I know the agenda now. It became very clear when I saw my 7 year old niece singing the lyrics to Ginuine songs. Talkin bout "Ride my pony".. It's song after song after song they play on the radio and everywhere else that they're pushing these words into young minds and having them repeat it themselves over and over again. Grown people too.

Whats this about the females rappers being butch-like. I thought he woud give props to Salt N Pepa at least. The problem today is too many people are allowed to be rappers. Anybody can do it. Wow. The great Melle Mel summed up in little more than five minutes what the heck they did not only to hip hop but to the last couple of generations who have been hoodwinked to believe that the life of a pimp, gangsta, gang banger, ho and straight up thug is what we should be aspiring to. The only path that leads to is jail and eternal hell.
I remember when NWA came out with Gangsta Gangsta the whole world went nuts and went out and tried to be like them and forgot about BDK, Public Enemy, KRS and the likes of the X Clan and Poor Righteous Teachers, Lakim Shabazz and Chill Rob G and the Flav Unit trying to teach us what time it was and how to be a better human being.
They done messed up our minds and now we seem to be beyond redemption.
How can any people's think it's right, it's good, it's cool or it's funny to present themselves and their women as pimps, hos, crack heads, murderers, rapists, gangstas and whatever other freak nasty business we got today.
We all done lost our minds and got brainwashed and should be ashamed of what's being pumped out today as hip hop and rap.
Melle Mel was so right to say that in the ghetto the people's was right minded folks trying to make an honest living, with respect for themselves and others. We know it wasn't all sweetness and light but people had respect for their neighbour's and got along just fine.
Today no one even knows their neighbour and the first time they meet it's to bash each other's brains in!
What happened to the hip hop saying of Keep it real? Today all these cats is wack and fake.
I suggest people go back and listen to
    World War III
    New York, New York
    The Message
    Survival
and so many other titles penned by Melle Mel and realise what garbage is being peddled today.
It's a crying shame to see what rap has become today.
    A crying shame.

    • @craiglucas913
      @craiglucas913 Před 9 lety +1

***** , first off I hope you have more than a high school education by starting off with "fuck you bitch. For god sake I hope that" Evil Priest" is not your rap name either and if it is go to church and pray for a successful career. Furthermore more, to my point I did not say KRS one was a poor rapper I respect KRS One, but after 1992 rap/hip hop died along with its political movement for the social justice and awareness of what was an issue in the USA. It was guys like DJ Kool Herc, Gandmaster Caz, Melle Mel, DJ Clark Kent, etc.. the list goes on that started a whole social and positive movement. The vast majority of new rappers from the early 90s and on, really have no relevance as they all rap about the same thing, sell it to white middle class America and get rich. I do not think that many of them even give back to their own neighbourhoods to assist in raising the standard of living to help their fellow bretheren. I'm not making any levels, my point is that rap / hip hop caters to mainstream white America along with corporate America all in the name of selling merchandise and records. It is sad the the grandfathers of hip hop and rap are being forgotten by many except the older people, and to your last point NOBODY is keeping hip hop alive except for the pioneers of rap such as KRS One, Public Enemy etc.... but what exposure do they get now......not much.

The old heads have a part in this too they didn’t tell the next rappers up to keep the music amongst themselves as opposed to them signing with WHITE LABELS WHOSE MAIN POINT IS TO CHARACTERIZE BLACK PEOPLE AS SAVAGES, IMMORAL, IGNORANT, AND UNDESIRABLE. Not once did he say that we as black people should’ve kept the culture to themselves and have people like him decide who can rap and who cannot you hear him they should do that, my question is this where you when you say rap devolving? Did you tell the younger cats about the industry and how these label execs rob you, pimp your culture, and only reward you for portraying a negative image. All in all it’s to easy to blame black folk for all their shortcomings but there is a lot of forces in play.
P.S. Also remember this the relationship between money and art has never been beneficial to the artist and the culture it represents in terms of the image.
