Thank you Sir. This is why we need to show love and respect to Chael. This man is the walking dictionary. What a great story🙏
I've trained under John Danaher, and also trained for ~5 years under Matt. Matt is easily to MMA knowledge and coaching what John is to BJJ, the only thing thats different is the public's perception or awareness of this. Also, even in his 50s his skills are still insanely sharp, to the point where those are still the scariest rolls i've ever had with anybody (and i've rolled with several HOFers), i'm not sure more than 10 seconds ever passed without me tapping, despite an almost 20 year age gap.
isn't he amazing
Hope it was fun
Chael has got to be the only person I never heard say the word " um " in-between words . He has a unnatural flow for as fast as he speaks.
Amazing what speach lessons can do hey!
That must be his white privilege
@@eldawg2742 in 2023 only racist blame color for disadvantages!
@@snowybooooy um yeah
Try listening to Anthony Smith hahah
Chael just interchangeably using instagram and TikTok is excellent
Both Matt Hume and Erik Paulson learned Catch wrestling in Japan at time when Japanese MMA scene was light years ahead of North America.
The Japanese trained Catch wrestlers who crossed over to America all became champions fairly easily: Frank Shamrock, Bas Rutten, Matt Hume, Erik Paulson, Josh Barnett, Kazushi Sakuraba, etc. Just to name a few early pioneers. These guys dominated their often much larger opponents at North American MMA scenes in 1990s and early 2000s.
Under Chael was leaps and bounds the best MMA fight promoter who's ever lived. And I'm talking about promoting his own fights. He was the absolute master of making his fights a must watch. We'll probably never see anything close to that again. He knew how to use intelligent trash talk. Extremely witty. Always hilarious. Got under everyone's skin. It was awesome. Lol.
Send anybody you want, but dont send anybody you want back - GOAT
Love when he told Brian stann he was gunna give him a red white and blue ass whoopin😭😭😂
It is so awesome that we get Chael's first person view on all of this legendary heritage of MMA. Thank you Mr Sonnen for all you did for promotion and these fantastic stories. One day they will make movies about it all.
I was at AMC (American Martial Arts Center) for 18 years under Matt from 2003-21. Before that I was at Team Quest from 2002-03 thanks to Robert Follis letting me train for free for my senior high school project. Love these talks about the old days. So many good stories from these wild west days of mma. You forgot to tell us if your dad won that 5k bet 🤣 Not sure if you've told about the SBG gym in Portland and how the old Team Quest guys trained there too but I'm sure there's great stuff there. Especially since Conor ended up being a SBG fighter from Ireland when that gym started in Portland. Miss when you were a politician and promoted Sportfight events.
old school most don’t know what you’re talking about but i remember.
I’m guessing he’s referring to ufc 33 ( which I was at) where Jens beat Hallman by decision after 5 rds. :).
Oh, and where Murillo Bustamonte got ripped off against Chuck lidell. Lol.
@@kristophermcleod4276 Yes, Bustamante should gotten that fight. One of the BJJ / MMA goats many have forgotten about.
"His name was Eric Pulson.."
Lived in same area as AMC gym in early 90's and we all knew Matt's name and reputation. Maurice Smith trained there too back when the Kickboxing world wanted nothing to do with him . A few friends trained there and they said just holding pads for Moe was painful. Lots off quality came from that gym
holding pads for moe is brutal.. felt like someone hitting you w a baseball bat. it was truly amazing how it would rattle your brain when he did body kicks. thud thud thud felt like my arm was breaking through the kick sheild.. fun one was bob sapp.. he didn't have that thud kick.. it was more like a battering ram. first kick from bob took me straight off my feet. rich Franklin couldn't take me off my feet. he barely made my front leg move. bobs hip flexibility wasn't great so his mid kick was awkward but just the weight of his leg would shove me back 10 feet
Maurice also had his own school in Bellevue. Maurice Smith's Kickboxing and submission center (1998) before he landed at AMC.
I went to Maurices school with Roman Roitberg before he went to AMC. Later I went to Ballard Juijitsu Firehouse under Mamazinho 'Ralph Gracie School' before he went back to Brazil. I was at Ivan Salverries school at Lake Union for a bit around 2006.
Trained with a fair amount of AMC guys at Ivans. Great work ethic.
Matt Hume is a legend. Maurice too.
Cheers
@@jodydolphin79 Did you train with Moe at Ivan's or AMC?
@@tinhatrancher904 i bounced around at a ton of schools. Alot of us including DJ, steve skids, im spacing on his name, but the 145 red head we all lived in the south end and primarily trained at the short lived auburn amc in vision quest. but made our trips up north. i worked with moe at AMC.
@@jodydolphin79 Thanks for the reply. I did about 4 schools myself including Reese Andies before he moved from Renton to Auburn.
Yes Moe's kicks are hard. Even just holding the Thai pad for him and demonstrating a round house, I could tell he had a lot of power.
This was 98 or so right after he beat Mark Coleman. Kasushi Sakaraba ' the Gracie Hunter' would come in his gym for a time to do cardio and roll at Maurice Smith's Kickboxing. He had another shorter trainer there with a mullet whom helped run the gym. Good guy. Got to take wrestling from some Lions den coaches there. Good memories.
I trained at The Wizard's gym back in the mid-90s. He & Haru Shimanishi were the coaches back then. Those guys were great people. I must have just missed an opportunity to train with you, Chael. I had to leave the gym around that same time that Barnett came in to the gym... after him fighting against Sun Bear at a Pankration event in Montana. We were shocked that Sun Bear lost.
that is fascinating
@Sub if you are against antifa and BLM Chris (Sun Bear) was one of the top guys at the gym, AMC (American Martial Arts Center) at that time. He helped coach and showed technique etc. Had many fights under his belt. He had the fight lined up along with a couple other guys from the team in Montana, so alot of us got to be involved in his prep for the fight. We felt pretty confident since he knew his opponent was gonna be some young, college wrestler with a 0-0 record. When Chris returned home with a loss, his opponent was remembered. When we learned that kid was coming to train at AMC... then we knew his name. LOL
I consider Erik Paulson one of the greatest coaches in the world. He has organized MMA since the early 90's and has excellent programs. Plus he's a fantastic human being.
Chael, I’m talking to you - we need more of these storytelling episodes. That is all.
I really like these type videos, really getting a mma history lesson today. Damn it's a wonder Chael isn't charging us a fee just to listen to the mma master mind named Chael P Sonnen!
I agree the stories are outstanding, but to worship another man and put him on such a pedestal is baffling to me
Sakuraba (the Gracie Killer) was the greatest catch wrestler of our time !!
I don't think anyone is more criminally underrated in the GOAT conversation than Dan Henderson.
I've met Matt Hume on a couple of occasions about 10 years ago very nice guy he actually introduced himself to me I used to be a rather large size bodybuilder at least in my humble opinion and here he was training Josh Barnett in a gym in Auburn Washington called vision quest that was secondary to AMC and that time Dimitri was not training with him but Josh Barnett also had a few guys from Japan there training with him
I took my son and his teammates to wrestling workouts there back in the early-mid 2000's!
@@Cucumberdrx yes I'd be in there lifting weights sometimes when the wrestling was going on and I got to say some of those kids were absolutely amazing I wrestled as a youth and I wouldn't have lasted more than a minute with any of them I know he had three four or five state champions there kids were incredible maybe your kid was one of them?
@@deepsquat600 My son did win a state title his sophomore year (2010), but he probably wasn't one of the elite guys you saw. We actually drove 300mi just to get a chance to work out with some of those kids and feed off of some of their coaching/technique. We were from Republic, a tiny town in NE WA.
@@Cucumberdrx well 2010 is definitely when I was working out down there my job moved from Bellevue to Auburn in 2010 so I no longer trained at Renton gold's gym so possibly I saw him I would work out on Saturdays or Sundays as well but anyway yes those kids were awesome perhaps I saw your awesome son as well 👍
@@deepsquat600 thanks for the kind words but we went to VQ years before that, when he was still in grade school. I wish I could remember the name of the coach/wrestler back then that we were going to see.
More Josh Barnett stories please
So Matt Hume came out of Pancrase, Erik Paulson was Shooto champion. Both fight promotions in Japan essentially Shoot or Legit pro wrestling promotions. Tiger Mask started Shooto, Billy Robinson started Pancrase. I wrote a book 📖 Rough and Tumble with Erik Paulson about this history back in 2008. Mitsuyo Maeda who trained the Gracies was a competitive catch wrestler and judoka. The Gracie family ran the Carnivals in Brazil 🇧🇷 where the catch wrestlers bet fans they couldn't last a few minutes in the wrestling tents. History is Very fascinating read our book 📖
What Chael is secretly telling you; Matt Hume is an amazing coach, and his star student Demetrious Johnson proved how great Hume was as a coach.
i trained w dj for a long time. Steve skidds was as much of an influence as matt on djs career
Erik is one of the greatest martial artists and instructors of all time - one of the pioneers of MMA - amazing amount of knowledge and never holds anything back. All of that and one of the most approachable and nicest human being as well. Those who know - know! Thank you for giving him some props 🙏
Matt hume is better
Thanks for the Great story. Reminds me of my father , always telling military stories. Captivating
That's awesome that your father used to tell you those stories my father did not my father was in the Korean war stationed in Tokyo as an MP only went to the front lines one time that he told us about and he did not like it at all and he only ever told us one story about people acting up in a no-go zone in Tokyo other than that he did not talk about it I wish you would have he's been dead now for over 30 years and I will never be able to learn those stories
Chael I truly appreciate you and basically love you .. in a manly way. We the public need more of these stories brother. It's okay to sell us fights but this is your niche. Man I gotta say it's a damn shame you didn't believe your on hype. All heart bro. Till the end
His name was coach eric pulson. His name...was coach eric pulson.
🐯very real thing
What about sakuraba
Thanks for schooling folks about the pioneers. Man Hume was ahead of his time.
I met Matt Hume at the Abu Dhabi combat club in 1997. He was amazingly skilled and knowledgeable even back then.
Very glad to find this , i had always wondered what Chael knew about catch wrestling and im learning what he does now
Old Chael can tell a story, can't he?
Matt was my wrestling coach at Kirkland junior high in the eighth grade and once the season ended I trained with him in wrestling and mma with him year round from then until the end of high school. I was one of his very first students, and my mom even lent him money to pay for him to purchase wrestling mats for us! Every moment I spent with him I either grew as an athlete or grew as a person. Although Matt is as humble a person as I have ever met, in my humble opinion, at his prime he was an unstoppable force. I’ve seen him sparring with Maurice Smith, who was at the time (in WKA, I think. Which was the most fearsome American kickboxing association at the time because the only one that allowed leg kicks) the heavyweight kickboxing championship of the world, and Matt would do wizard shit on Maurice. Maurice could barely land a punch. And there’s a video of Matt fighting Ken Shamrock and yeah Matt loses but Ken has like 40 or more pounds of muscle on him and Matt looks like the least worried person ever to get in a ring… Anywho, my for my entire adult life my definition of frustration is “how I feel when somebody starts mansplaining something mma related to me!
Love the old school stories.
I think it’s hilarious that Chael got the “you’ve been on Instagram too long” message before I have
Like Bob Dylan said, "The times are a' changing!" I remember ordering stuff from magazines; and those dang VHS 📼!!!! 😂 A few years back, Josh was on Rogan's show, and he shared a story about CONTINUING to live in downtown LA. even though he could afford otherwise. When Joe asked him WHY? Josh calmly stated: "We'll, sometimes you walk outside and meet a nice person; sometimes you meet a homeless person; and sometimes you meet someone who tries to stab you. It keeps it interesting." LOL!!!! That's when I knew Josh is cut from a different fabric than most of us! He's a legitimate GLADIATOR!!!!
It is amazing how this channel manages to capture the essence of stories passed down, this is how myths and legends were created once in a while, and now we have uncle Chael telling us what's up every day, and some times what happened
Haha Pat Miletich showed that exact same move at a seminar I went to around 2004 and talked about how awesome it was and Hughes made Sylvia cry for help using that move at practice. I forgot if he claimed to invent it or not. Good times
Outstanding vid thanks for the share 👍🏾🙏🏾
Chael gives free MMA history lessons. This is Doctorate level stuff.
Chael should do a video on the history of Catchwrestling!!! I've always been interested in that
i'm the only guy with the tape. love that. and you said 97. i graduated in 92 from high school. my Dad was into boxing. my great granpa fought sugar ray robinson in amateur. but i remeber ufc at my dads house in 93. we had an illegal cable bs thing. i never missed another one. my dad never took to mma. he would watch it but never loved it. he always hated he had to judge mma fights. mississippi boxing commission was bad ass early 90s. tuesday night fights. he said sean o'grady was a terrible tipper. tipped one freaking quarter. anyway. just heard you mention you pops and mine passed away in 2020. he got me into boxing and i got him almost into mma. i miss him. and i miss he didn't see fury beat wilder. he called tyson/ douglas. he thought wilder would be the best if he was under control. he went rouge the last round of their first fight to win it. and rouge won his fights again twice. peace bro. just mentioning your dad brought up mine.
I got to train with coach Billy Scott for a couple months and it was a great experience. From a jiu jitsu guy, catch is awesome.
That story of Chael paying for boxing lessons believing he'd be the first guy to think of it is hilarious. Perfect teenage logic.
Anyone else here forget what this video was about six minutes in?
Matt Hume was a Pancrase fighter in Japan and Paulson was a Shooto champion in Japan
Kip Triplet was my first boxing trainer, so cool he name dropped him
Love these stories! Keep it rolling uncle C
Amazing video on some mma history. I would love it if we had some more vids like this
You haven't made it in life until chael tells his two viewers how great you are in between window sheen ads
"How did we get here?" .....I was thinking the same thing, just about your rambling story lol
I love that he just casually says he made his dad waste 5000 dollars
Uncle Chaels stories💪
Great story. Thank you
WOW
Thanks Chael
Agree on Josh Barnett. How could anyone argue with that.
Great video would love to see more of these
The apex of promotion speaks, and I listen.
I'd give anything to have witnessed some of those old team quest practices fr
I remember the old AMC Pankration…
The old Greek sport I believe it was…
I got that same Marco Ruas series btw 😂

Lou Thez, and Stu Hart!
I wish someone would do an entire interview w/ Bret Hart about his father catch wrestling and stretching guys in the dungeon!
Thanks. Was wondering why Josh made the switch.
Have been a huge fan since your collegiate days, prior to my own. I love the interview with Gable in ‘18, and when reach back to guys like Les Gutches, Ed Banach, the Brand brothers (etc.)!
I was a huge professional wrestling fan as a kid, (actually went to my first folk style practice at 4 with a ski mask tucked away until the old man found out 😂)!
I think it would make a really fun watch to see you go back and forth with a guy like Brett Hart who evolved from ‘getting stretched’ by his father Stu Hart, a great catch wrestler in his own right!
Bret Hart is a legend but i would not mention scripted actors when talking to actual fighters
@@mathprodigy a lot of those guys DID know how to fight that is why they made it look good
Lol, this isn’t a clinic.
It’s entertainment, and he was referring to a Professional wrestler.
If you’ve followed Chael, he actually made it through tryouts for WCW and almost decided on that before MMA.
Plus as I mentioned the NCAA greats are my fav content (minus “get in the hole” 😂),
however it would make for Entertaining media.
Every name you dropped could be it's own story....but I'm old school....great watch...😁👍🤙👊
Neil Melanson ftw, absolute monster.
Awesome story!! But I feel like there’s a lot more to it, Chael.!! We want the whole thing...!!!
Matt Hume is a legend!
I didn't come to appreciate Josh Barnett until recently. I didn't realize how great he really was. If you question this, go watch all his old fights. He was great... Hell he will still beat guys to death 🤣
They call u Chael Sonnen!!
Chael took a IQ test once.
The result spit out of the machine.
*one at a time, please*
This is a cool guy.
Funny story: Early 90s, I’m a grocery clerk in Kirkland Washington. Matt’s gym was down the street and he and his then wife were regular shoppers. Always friendly and polite. One day he shows up at the store with a small mouse under his eye and I asked how he got it: “I just got back from a type of martial arts tournament in Japan, and got it there.” Me: “Cool, I’m a purple belt in Shotokan and have done a few point tournaments myself! But never got so unlucky (lol) as actually getting hit in the face.” I had absolutely ZERO idea about MMA, nor the total badass Matt was. He smiled and said “That’s cool! Maybe come by and train at our gym sometime.” Matt’s a class act. I did go train a bit and was soundly, and gently, choked out, submitted, and generally dominated over and over again.
Jeff "The snowman" Monson scariest nicest guy met years back at the UFC Expo. Literally built like the Juggernaut
while u bring up machida and wonderboy dont forget henry cejudo changed his stance to a karate like style and beat matt humes pupil demetrious mighty mouse johnson! when henry started implementing that strait palm read he chained his olympic class wrestling off of it and cemented his legacy.
Rich Franklin was also a Karate guy, it might not of been as noticeable as say Lyoto Machida and Wonderboy but it was his first Martial art, it somewhat could be noticed in how he striked, cant mention karate in the UFC without GSP also
The War Master
BEST STORY EVER!!!
Ken shamrock is the name that came to mind when you said "catch wrestling". He was the first big name on the scene known for that......actually I just looked it up.. Ken was a shootfighter.. not sure what that is or if there is a difference.
Shootfighting has catch wresting in its ingredients. The history of catch as catch can wrestling is very rich but underappreciated, like a more esoteric bjj.
Erik Paulsen nearly got his ponytail ripped off of his head by James Warring in the “World Combat Championship” MMA fight.
The stories about matt hume are legendary and i heard them from an old school amc guy. Matt literally beats the shit out of everybody in the gym all the ufc guys dj even said matt beat the shit outta him for his fight yesterday.
matt has to be approaching 60

The 'move'.
His name was Robert Paulson...lol
I know at least two more names with catch wrestling, Ken Shemrock and Sakuraba.
His Name was Robert....
My main MMA trainer that I consider to be one of the greatest coaches and trainer taught catch as only catch can and was one of Eric Paulson's top students also an Ohio champion
Wait did your dad win that 5k bet?!?!
Lou Thesz was well into the era of professional wrestling being a work. It had been a work for decades already. The era of Frank gotch and whatnot it was already at work.
