@@theescapist Ok, thanks for answering.
Not sure if this'll ever be seen, but I've been wondering if you guys would review YIIK: A Postmodern RPG.
For those interested in the title, I wish you all luck. Trust me, you're gonna need it.
The difficulty isn't low: it was adjusted for one-handed playthrough.
@Channel07 that had to do with console limitations at the time than anything else.
@@keiichimorisato98 yea,console limitations,sure
@@comradesam3382 there is a reason they chose the bump system at the time. I dont remember the exact details sadly, I learned about why ten years ago when I first got into the franchise.
I'm honestly not sure if anyone who replied so far got the joke.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
When he says “It’s not bad at all,” he actually sounds like a pleasant human being. It’s so unnatural
It's a rare moment when Yahtzee finds a game: Shocking, and GOOD.
Comments like this come up a lot when Yahtzee has a good review, and I have to ask: what are you talking about? There are literally hundreds of ZP reviews, and many of them were generally positive, if not entirely perfect (because what is?). It's not unnatural at all.
Hell lots of times he says good AND bad about a game
Oh that’s easy. It’s because it’s a joke. He’s pretty famous for being very, VERY critical and sardonic in these reviews, it’s kind of the entire Yahtzee character.
I like Yahtzee and Zero Punctuation, I’m not trying to critique the review or something like that. I just thought his change of tone in that one section could lead to a solid C- tier joke.
The sad thing is he's right. Half Genie Hero was quite good and I was quite looking forward to Seven Sirens... Hasn't lived up to my expectations so far...
“The Bayonetta Saturday morning cartoon” is a surprisingly accurate description of Shantae
Yeah, but Shantae existed before Bayonetta, so technically Bayonetta is the late night adult cartoon rip-off of Shantae.
@@Wol1427 But Bayonetta is more like a sexy, female empowerment version of Devil May Cry's Dante..... starting to think originality is dead.
@@Netherwolf6100
As the saying goes, nothing is original under the sun.
@@Wol1427 Might have existed before Bayonetta but it's about exposure. Shantae has been around for 18 years and most people in the world has never known of this character. Not an _inaccurate_ description of the Shantae series.
Apparently there is a possibility of this being a thing too. According to Plague of Gripes in his Art Gripes about Shantae WayForeward is interested in making a series with Shantae
"it's hard to argue his assessment"
@@Scream_Lord Seems a bit too late to me. If they try to make a series with characters designed like this Wayforward will be the latest to draw the ire of the Twitter twats.
@@mightymanatee5342 The writing is much more important than the costume choices. If the characters are well realized and actually behave like women rather than like cursed stereotypes created by dudes who work next to a strip club and haven't seen the sun since 1998, the same people who love She-ra, Madoka, and Legend of Korra will go to bat for Shante.
@Exquisite Corpse - I kind of agree here.
If simply wearing more clothing defined how progressive or feminist a character is, then a Burka would be the highest expression of feminist ideas ... which it clearly isn’t. I think it’s more the character on the inside that counts.
Which is not to say exactly that Shantae is a role model or anything ... but I think we’re glossing over the fact that the Shantae is always at least light-hearted and positive, all her games pass the Bechdel test, and she displays actual agency in trying to rescue her friends. Which is better in my book, than being a damsel in distress or treated purely as an object/reward. So I don’t think Shantae’s clothing is anything to get triggered about, personally ... even as a flaming liberal.
And, for whatever it is worth, Shantae’s character was designed by a woman. I don’t think her clothes were ever intended as a political statement. She’s just drawn how she’s drawn because that’s the style - it’s supposed to look like an anime, and it’s meant to be cute/kawaii, rather than demeaning, and her design was clearly meant to be cute and appeal to both a male and female demographic. I’m not upset about that.

Rest in peace, Sigma Star Saga. We hardly knew ye.
I discovered Wayforward because I accidentally allowed a track from Mighty Switch Force to play from a video game music playlist rather than clicking away. It was pretty damn good.
So I made a playlist of the soundtrack, adding the second game when that came out a year later; and used to listen to it on shuffle while studying.
I say "used to" because CZcams has since mangled itself in multiple ways, including the ability to play a playlist on shuffle without repeats.
Anyway that's my rant, happy Coronavirus Survival Epoch everyone
AstroTibs It was Love You Love You Love wasn’t it
"Book of memories- Wait, that was you!"
WAIT, THAT WAS THEM?!
As a longtime wayforward fan I didn't even know that lol
Could you explain the joke pls?
RDSk Silent Hill 2 is one of Yahtzee's favorite games of all time and he refers to every Silent Hill game since it in.. Less than kind terms. Deservedly so, I'd say.
@@mitchellblake1475 wot? Did I get my head stuck in a vat of crazy? The other team silent silent hill game he reviewed he had quite a handful of good things to say. And it was the fucking room. Which many people dislike and I find myself agreeing, at least in terms of gameplay.
But he never said that 1 or 3 were bad, just that they could've been as good as 2 if they weren't so narmy. He also enjoyed shattered memories and said homecoming was bad for a sh game, not a game in general (which I disagree with but that's neither here nor there). Also read my next comment to see why I got so tied up in a knot from your comment.
@@RDSk0 silent hill book of memories took a terrifying, clunky survival horror about being alone in the abyss with something that hates you and made a bottom of the barrel hack and slash out of it. And it was even noisier and more colorful than homecoming. On top of that that game implied a beloved character from the first game was dead. That's why he backpedalled so hard when he saw these were the people who made it. Probably their next choice would've been to retell final fantasy 7 as a grounded crime drama about the mafia needing to choose between losing their turf and fighting for it but risking the poloce catching them. And the gameplay would be color matching of the easies caliber, with the story implying barret got cement shoes after the original canon story.
Speaking as a longtime Shantae fan, this is definitely the most... conflicted entry in the series. On one hand it's trying to be a fresh jumping-on point for all their new Apple Arcade customers, but on the other hand also try and address complaints from the really hardcore Shantae fans who kept complaining "Half-Genie Hero was a step back after Pirate's Curse".
The end result is a game with really fluid movement system that's afraid to challenge you, so you just breeze through every level. And since almost every level is in the same environment, "underwater city", the gameplay never feels like it evolves.
The one saving grace for me, as a Shantae fan, was advancing the metaplot. I got a kick out of seeing more half-genies and glimpses of their genie moms, and seeing more of the threats genies used to protect the humans from. And seeing more Risky Boots, she had some great stuff in the big climax.
climax huh
If you revisit the dog after completing the lowest area of the city she is shocked about one of your powers stating she thought only she and her daughter had such an ability.
Please elaborate on the big climax
Well, from a longtime Shantae fan to a regular gamer who never heard of this game before and the first time he saw Shantae EVER was on Deviantart, can you please boil it down for me? Why are these games so obsessed with jiggling boobs? Or is it just this one recent game, and all the other old ones were just merely implying that Shantae, being some kind of half-genie presumably came from an Arabic nation or something, and that's not a stereotype, these nations are legit "Hell-on-earth" level of hot?
DISCLAIMER: I'm seriously asking, I'm not trying to make fun of you. The way Yahtz talks just robbs off on me
I really enjoyed this one. And all of them. But I definitely agree that it is too easy. And it would be easy as pie to solve that. Give me a hard mode where there is no food. It would make me have to buy the potions and I wouldn't damage boost through all the enemies any more.
Easiest thing to explain the downgrade of this game to the previous: it was a timed mobile exclusive before coming to consoles.

All that jiggling must've put him in a good mood.
Has he played Pirate's Curse? That's far and away the best game in the series to date, and if he liked Half-Genie Hero he'd probably enjoy that one even more
Pirates curse was pretty fun.
Out of the entire series, I'd say Pirate's Curse wins for sheer gameplay fun, and Half Genie Hero wins the silver medal by its art style and, unlike Seven Sirens, not riding on that alone.
Playing that one right now (it was free on xbox this month) and I gotta say its much better than I thought it would be.
Personally I had the Most fun with the original Shantae and in the world Design of the Risky's Revenge. I admit I am a bit more into puzzles than most though. Pirate's Curse does have the Tightest gameplay hands down.

This comment is just amazing
So, is this Yahtzee’s breast game of the year?
"The five breast games of the year" should be a category in his end year review.
Hope so.
Just wait until the next few years, and that title will go to either Cyberpunk 2077, Subverse, Leauge of Maidens, Lust from Beyond, or Wildlife
I wonder if Wayforward will watch this video. I imagine their reactions would be something along the lines of:
"Oh, is that that how the internet sees us these days? Bad movie tie-ins and boobs?"
And then I'd think there'd either be uproarious cheering and high-fives all around, or a silence that lasts a few seconds too long before someone clears their throat and they go back to animating more jiggle-physics with a now awkward atmosphere.
Because let's face it: if you're making games intended to be played with one hand, you either embrace it or feel some level of guilt.
I don't think they'd be looking for high fives given the amount of one-handed work they'd been doing prior.
And the weird bit is: I have absolutely no idea where they are on this spectrum... Do they feel they need to? Is it still on the harmless fun side for them? Were they trying to be cute? Who knows!
@@magmos6346 Maybe the devs think that to keep the series standing out over the flood of ever-increasing platformers coming from the indie scene, they need something that most platformers don't have: sex appeal. I mean, it worked for Catherine, right?
Then again, like Alex said, who knows what WayForward is thinking. They're playing their cards pretty close to the CHEST.
I will not apologize for that pun.
@Alex Norman Year old comment, but allow me to clear it up a bit
I follow the lead director of Shantae and head of Wayforward, Matt Bozon, on Twitter. The guy constantly likes and retweets art of not only Shantae, but several prolific JP artists. A fair number of said artists mostly draw cheesecake. Guy's a MASSIVE weeb who lives and dies by the horn.
They definitely do this stuff because they enjoy it to at least some degree.
Try Mummy Demastered. It's the only good movie tie-in they did.

"The only shantae game that is a Metroidvania"
Risky's Revenge cries softly in the corner.
"Their only unique IP"
Mighty Switch Force also cries softly in a corner.
Seriously though, WayForward is actually one of my favorite modern indie developers besides maybe Inti Creates. They keep the spirit of old-school alive, bringing forward the goodness while managing to weed out all of the worst aspects of classic gaming. Their spectacular work on "DuckTales: Remastered" speaks for itself, in my opinion. Though I will admit Seven Sirens in particular is a bit below par for them in a number of ways.
You do realized that WayForward is also a shovelware publisher, right?
@@blondiefox2781 This is lies.
They helped made Bloodstained, and made River City Girls which is the closest thing we will ever get to a new Scott Pilgrim game.
Also that Mummy movie tie in which was sadly better than the movie.
@@Ineedgames No, I'm pretty sure that WayForward has a shit-ton of shovel ware under their belt.

Pretty sure it was mostly former WayForward employees who went on to found Yacht Club Games
You know what would be an interesting idea for the Dance Mechanic? You, the player, gets to design the dances and customize the effects. So each dance would have a different look to go along with the effect. Shantae could do a jiggle-shimmy-shake dance, and that summons a fireball, but the shimmy-shimmy-shake dance might create a localized earthquake or something.
Let me tell you about the first game...
Hm - i must admit i thought it looked a bit dissapointing - especially since they launched it exclusively on apple games for months before, draining it of any anticipation i had. I did love Half Genie Hero though
I've only played Pirate's Curse so far but Steve B is right by pretty much every account I can find it's considered the best in the series, and I can personally attest to its greatness as well, the only real complaint I have is that the achievements where designed by a friggin sadist, but that only matters if your a cheevo hunter like me and I still enjoy the game regardless. As an aside I don't know why people seem insistent on calling it a psuedo metroidvania when it's clearly trying to be A Side Scrolling Legend of Zelda.
@@namename8004 Yeah! Shante: Half Genie Hero inspired me to make my 'Xavage Xtreet Xisters' beat-em-up characters :-)
@@namename8004 Hehe - thanks! I've been a follower of this channel for a while
The game looks and feels like Aria of Sorrow: The horny flash version, stuck in easy mode for the entire game.
That's despicable.
Aria of Sorrow is already Metroidvania easy mode.
Aria had a carefully designed map -- this game does not. Even though it's probably the easiest Castlevania in the series, you could still die there, not to mention the hard mode (hard mode in the subject of this video is utter joke, it's literally no different from the normal mode).
Super Metroid was easier than Aria to be honest.
A fair analysis. If you like metroidvanias, cartoon titties, and don't need a game to be especially challenging to enjoy it, well, here's a game for you!
All of you should try to get your hands on Shantae: Risky's Revenge. It's actually well made and has some challenge, as well as a Metroidvania style world.
Eventually someone is going to realize:
"My god. Way Forward has just been making the same game for 15+ years."
*Nintendo sweating nervously*
I wish... I'd be fine with them making the same game over and over if they were all of the same quality as Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse.
Peopledon't mind the same game over and over. Mario proves that. It just has to feel like "what if they made super Mario Bros on the SNES/64/cube/wii/wiu/switch". It makes sense: if I pick up Zelda on the switch I expect it to be....Zelda...on the Switch. If I wanted something new I would get a game not named Zelda.
The issue is when a series feels like you are playing an older system than before. When they play your newest game and still say "man I wish I was playing (older game) something went wrong.
It seems to work for whichever company keeps crapping out “new” Call of Duty games every year. (I honestly can’t be arsed to look it up)

I loved the “but wait, there’s even MORE!” vibe toward the end.
Half Genie hero only has the Giant Mermaid as a bikini topped boss but Yahtzee says "the first couple of bosses"...

Not even! It's so far from an H-game, I wonder what their intention was? Were they actually trying to be cute? Lighthearted? Mildly suggestive just so that an artist can get paid for drawing the good stuff? No idea.
not-really subtle attempt at mimicking the Japanese approach to sexiness AND cuteness in characters.
Hell, even Japanese creators tend to get hamfisted in one of those two directions often.

the unexpected disarming awkwardness really sets this one apart
I am surprised that you never heard of Shantae until now, but than again, Wayforward just got Shantae off the ground with Pirates Curse and went off there.
Wayforward’s made a lot of quality games besides Shantae. There’s the Mighty series, the recent River City Girls, and even a few of their licensed games are actually pretty good. The Mummy Demastered and Contra 4 for example.
Plus, that animation technically *was* made in Japan, since the cutscenes were done by studio Trigger, who is also notoriously horny on main so it’s a perfect match really. Anyway this game has the same issues I had with Half-Genie Hero, including the art style which went nearly unchanged despite the new character designs in the portraits and cutscenes. I really think they peaked with Pirates Curse.
Is river-city girls not a licensed game?
Mighty Switch Force!!!
As far as i remember, trigger only did the Intro.
@@kiryans5 they only did the intro when you launch the game. The rest of the cutscenes were done in house.
Well, that's a shame. I was hoping this was gonna be a return to the quality of Pirate's Curse, which Half-Genie Hero was a huge drop off from, but if this makes Half-Genie Hero look good, then damn, that doesn't bod well.
I guess it makes sense, though, a lot of the Pirate's Curse guys left to work on Shovel Knight.
Try Pirate's Curse, though Yatz, it's one of my favorite Metroidvanias.
I was always kind of suspect of the rebooted shantae series tbh. It was for a time the only positive review on a really toxic Steam curator's list.
I hate short and vague reviews anyway, but this one curator took the cake. Aside from slamming perfectly good games just for the fact they have denuvo, they have cookie cutter reviews, are obnoxiously transphobic (or act like it I should say) and now I'm fairly certain that they're also nonces
That sounds like the exact same problem Sonic games have when their developers just up and left to develop Zelda
I played Risky's Revenge and then this. I felt 7 Sirens was an improvement just going by that. Some really fun abilities in Sirens, and more and better dungeons. And yes, a true Metroidvania map even if it's not the best one. And great music and humor as expected. So I still think Sirens is worth it. Though I can't wait to try Half Genie Hero and especially Pirate's Curse.
Yahtzee: Man cannot live on horn alone!
Me: You underestimate my power!
I don't know why but your pun about hammerspace really made me smile. Pants-ry. I am definitely stealing that.
I would love to hear a dramatic reading of "Whip My Hair" by Yahtzee 😍
Honestly a very true review. I still love the game though. Great art, cool quick change transformation skills, and yes i do agree im seeing where it falls short. Still a jolly good time.
They did a major update and retooled most of the game back in November of last year. It is way better now.
I actually grew up in the same city as the developer company. It feels weird to have Yahtzee reference my hometown.
The game did do some things right I think, the movement in the game with the transformations feels amazing. It feels really good to zip around and explore. I just think that the world wasn't really built for what tools are made available to you, and it was a bit hodgepodge. An entirely underwater city isn't a bad theme to go with, Hollow Knight did an underground city and it worked amazingly well, it's just that the environment designs were never fleshed out very well. Pirate's Curse is still by far the best game of the series, and I kinda enjoy the over the top horniness to a degree. Feels kinda tongue-in-cheek to a degree, especially since the game is really meta on a lot of other game tropes as well.
The way Yahtzee says "I was offended!" cracks me up for some reason.
Shantae seems like she's the answer to the question of what would Princess Jasmine from the end of the animated Disney Aladdin movie look like if you made her an anime girl with purple hair.
Wayforward actually did mighty switch force, which was quite nice.
Pirate’s Curse is commonly regarded as being the best one, but Shantae (2002) is super impressive. Risky’s Revenge is great as well.
"Shantae and the seven siren heads"
Not as good as "Shantae and the pirate's curse of the Caribbean"
Shantae and the Pirate's of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl.
I got Half-Genie Hero, and I was kinda pleased to hear that Yahtzee actually thought it was pretty decent.
WayForward does some surprisingly good licensed games at times. Ducktales: Remastered is one of them, but also a lesser known one is "The Mummy: Demastered" which is based off the film of the same name.
Granted, The Mummy Demastered isn't amazing gameplay wise but I did find the concept incredibly novel. They took a licensed movie property and made it look like a pixel indie game.
I'm glad he tried the previous entry in the series at the end of the review, because Seven Sirens isn't the best first impression
I highly doubt that Yahtzee just now "discovered" Shantae.
He said he'd seen it before but didn't think much of it until now.
When describing Wayforward’s other games, I’m surprised he didn’t mention Mighty Switch Force, the soundtrack to that game is worth reviewing alone

Pirate's Curse is arguably the best of the series, so if there's any that will scratch that metroidvenia itch, it is that one

The jab at book of memories made me laugh out loud.
That ending always gets me lol
Member gang, where you at?
I was wondering why this game sounded familiar. Then I realised I've seen the trailer cause they got Studio Trigger to do it. Guess that's where all the budget went.
Hoo! I needed that laugh. Thank you
Try Pirates Curse next, it's basically a Metroidvania with a hub town. Both inside and outside of the dungeons of each level, you get plenty of time to run around with various abilities. And they even take out the dances because of plot elements so you can play with the Pirate Queen's abilities.
Also: This time Jake Kaufmann did NOT do the music. This is heresy! :(
...That disappoints me.
"Man can not live on porn alone"
My sex life for the last 6 years disagrees.
Addict
My sex life up to this point in time disagrees.
I can relate to this, which is bad
It used to be an IPhone game as a part of the “Apple Arcade” exclusivity deal, that’s why it’s super easy. kinda like how exit the gungeon have similar feel to it.
I adore the term "Metroid-feign-ia"
Honestly Yatzhee is kind of the last person I'd ever expect to get the appeal of Shantae that so many others do , so the way he responded to it isn't too surprising.
what, porn?
On the bright side at least he liked the previous entry. It's just seven sirens that's not that great
Perhaps the downgrade in quality was due to the head of the development company being shot dead by an electric monk hidden in the boot of his car.
And while the Wikipedia page for Wayforward Technologies doesn’t confirm that their name is a big Douglas Adams reference, I doubt that it’s all just a coincidence.
An Electric whatt?
@@The.Orange.Wizard An Electric Monk, from the novel Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency: “a labour-saving device, like a dishwasher or a video recorder: dishwashers washed tedious dishes for you, thus saving you the bother of washing them yourself. Video recorders watched tedious television for you, thus saving you the bother of looking at it yourself. Electric monks believed things for you, thus saving you what was becoming an increasingly onerous task, that of believing all the things the world expected you to believe.”
This review has made me dig deeper into the series and I need a good platformer title. I’ll get 2,3 and 4 but not seven sirens yet.
I love that his dog keeps showing up.
It’s not a real dog; it’s a picture of a dog.
I mean, a tropical vacational setting is the one place were wearing only a bikini makes kind of sense.
When every woman in the game dresses like shantae, it really starts to look like fan service. Whether it was intentional or not. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has that same problem, but not to the exact extent.
4:59 I can tell you what happened: APPLE ARCADE. Shantae and the Seven Sirens was at first, an Apple Arcade *exclusive* title. That's what happened to it.
This was one of the best he did in a while, i wonder if the game being on the short side left him more time to write it.
Probably but he mentioned playing both games so I don't know.
