  • Regulator skills that you will be learning during your open water course are based on keeping you safe in the event of a problem. The free flowing regulator skill is how to breathe from a free flowing regulator.
You need to remove the regulator from your mouth so that the high volumes of air flow do not force their way into your lungs risking a lung over expansion injury.
You will locate another air source such as a buddy or your back up. If you cannot stop a free flowing regulator your tank will empty quite quickly. Crimping the hose by bending it can slow the flow if it cannot be stopped.
In any case you will want to end the dive and get your regulators serviced by your local authorised service technician.
