I'm so glad someone else thought this!! It bothers me too cuz yeah, it's meaningless and just the laziest way to force the movie name into a song. Maybe if they introduced it as a theme like if Remy thinks of his life as a dish he's still trying to perfect. Or has some connection to ratatouille. But even then, I can't think of a non-tacky way for him to realize that he IS the ratatouille 🤣

The original creator of the melody went on to say that she imagines it's sung by Remy's dad, who misunderstands what ratatouille is. She intended it as like an opening number that would be interrupted by Remy being all like "Dad! That's not how it went! That's a food!" And then it begins the story and ends with the dad coming out and convincing Remy to let him sing it even if it's not correct.

How would they portray Remy being inside the hat live, you ask? Simple: They would construct half a giant, floating chef's hat and hang it over the stage. Remy would be hoisted into it and would sit there, yanking on huge strands of crunchy orange hair while Linguini runs around the kitchen (still wearing a regular-sized hat, ofc). The monstrosity of a hat would turn and sway, with Remy yelling "Whu-ooooooooooh!" and "Watch it!" to the audience's delight. When Linguini puts pieces of food into his hat for Remy to taste, giant foam pieces would go into the hat.
It would make it into every trailer as the big, innovative set piece. They would win awards for the set design, and every other musical would follow their lead and make a comedically large hat to appeal to the younger generation. In the year 3040, musicals will be known as hatsicals (or, colloquially, 'ratsicals', and they will only feature increasingly bigger hats populated by vermin punctuated by the occasional comedic drum beat. Remy the Ratatouille will change the world - he will bring peace to us all and prosperity, merging every nation into one, hat-loving, rat-loving bunch of groupies.
Or, more realistically, they would use a big, tacky screen and fill it with sparkles and ugly CG.

I spoke to a few of the people at Seaview who picked it up which... was an experience. They were marketing themselves as a company to a bunch of kids from 14-18 who were just trying to learn about the ins and out of the production and gain industry connections for when they entered. The closest we got to learning was when one of my conservatory mates co-hosted a panel but I don't remember a whole lot other than a few of us were asked to create questions for the panel and I was featured with my pre-transition self. It was a very strange experience back in the pandemic days.

I really like the Kitchen Tango and The Rat's Way of Life, and it's a great big break for a lot of smaller composers who got their start on TikTok as well. Like I don't think for a second that it's ever going to BE anything other than this, but they probably were smart enough to think things over and recognize that stepping in would be a bad look.

I respectfully have to challenge/disagree with the idea that the easy idea was chosen or because TikTok is such a quick platform that’s why people forgot it. As someone who watched and followed a lot of people during the time, I agree most apart the trend were excited about the Live Show and saw that as the high point. But also most didn’t want to possibly put the project in development hell or have any semi successful attempts at a musical be taken down by Disney copyright. There was a general consensus that even if not ever aspect of the trend or creator’s song was highlighted in the live show, it was generally better to leave it off with the light heart charity bang then to have future “maybe” projects be in that development hell.

THIS is the content we need, I'm excited for the next video.
Also, my hypothesis on why Ratatouille hasn't gone anywhere is simply that it had so many people participating in it's creation. The main composers were recognized but from a legal sense you can't conceivably find and sign on every person who contributed, which makes producing the show for any amount of money a legal nightmare. It could only be done because they were doing it for charity.

i was SO into the ratatouille musical, since ratatouille is my favourite movie and i almost majored in musical theatre. i loved it a lot but its definitely a fever dream musical in the best way. idk how well it could be translated into a full stage production, but if it is, id KILL to play linguini. i really loved wayne bradys performance the most (but i also just love wayne brady), and while i agree the costumes were a bit lacklustre, i thought it made sense in some aspects. i wish the rats had ears, but the rest of their costumes looked great. especially wayne brady, he looks like he just crawled out of a dumpster in the best way possible, since thats how the rats live in the movie/musical. overall i think if this was brought to the stage, id want to see the original movie plot fleshed out more instead of just explained to us, i feel like we could get some more good songs out of the scenes that were glossed over (maybe even le festin at some point?? idk i was hoping to hear it during the musical), i feel like this show could benefit from a full ensemble and large props to make everything more immersive than tiktok effects

I remember watching compilations of videos about people talking about how they would do things for the musical, it's fun to see people express their creativity and passion in such a way together. It could be fun to see animatics for some songs but I had no idea there was a properish musical made?

for the hat idea- love the silhouette in hat worn by linguini actor idea, but I think for remy, a smaller platform above the stage, like on a higher level, that lights up the remy actor standing inside an enormous hat (cut in half so we see inside it)

Ratatouille the musical carried out during the dark times is an absolute MASTERPIECE! The poor quality sound, backgrounds, and editing but combined with the insane passion of broadway actors and tiktokers is a fever dream that I keep coming back to. It’s the strangest yet most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

You know, I wouldn't mind an actual theater release of the musical. Extend the Production so it had a steadier pacing, cut down on the monologues, get some interesting props and some clean choreography and this could polish up quite nicely. It won't be the next lion king, but I could defiantly be something to cherish.

the ratatouille musical is an amazing thing that exists but I also have some oddly specific beef with it and that is that nobody thought to make a song (or it wasn't included) for the scene where remy eats some cheese and strawberry and stuff
like... it's so obvious! In the original film it's this moment which illustrates Remy's passion and ability for food, and it's REPRESENTED VIA MUSIC. like literally what other scene would be more fitting for a musical number...
maybe they could also have Anton Ego eating the food and being transported to his childhood represented via a reprise of that song... yknow... think about it

Honestly, I could see Ratatouille being an actual musical? Like, I can close my eyes and see this on stage. It’s really weird, but I think it would be really good. Maybe some of the lines should be changed because it was very direct? And definitely make it longer, but besides that I think this would be a good musical!

If you guys ever are interested in virtual musicals that are well organized, I recommend Nightmare Time by Starkid! You have to watch The Guy who Didn't Like Musicals and Black Friday first, but then you watch the full first and second season and finish with Nerdy Prudes Must Die. It's all so good, the first few NT episodes are a bit glitchy since it was done through Zoom, but the editing and quality ramps up quickly.

I went to school with Dan Mertzlufft. He’s a great guy and he had a lot to do with the creation of this and the other TikTok musical. He’s also included another one of our classmates, Cori Jaskier, in both projects. Cori is also incredibly talented. As much of a mess as this was, it was filled with so much joy and love for the craft. I loved it.
