Such a shame that the only footage is of him as an old man showing off with a bunch of awestruck compliant followers. I'd love to see film of him as the young martial artist who earned the moniker "The Budo Master of Ayabe" Would he have been a fighter ? Or would he have been a joke like the fool who decided to test his Aikido and Kiah mastery against an MMA fighter ?
Sorry but much as I amire the "bullshit walks" effect of MMA on the martial arts world, it's a long way from being the be all and end all of fighting - especially on the street. The list of banned techniques in organisations like the UFC is almost a compendium of effective street fighting - small joint manipulations, groin strikes, eye gouges, fishhooks, headbuts and stamping on a downed opponent are all good on the street. Don't entirly dismiss Akido either. Sometimes a punch isn't the answer.
Just watched the video. Looks more like a Japanese propaganda movie than a martial arts demonstration. Japan had already invaded Manchuria at this point and was flexing it's muscles ready to push into the pacific. Sorry but I'm unimpressed. Part of me knows that Ueshiba could fight but the man in that 1935 video is a joke who would get creamed by any decent modern martial artist.
This man was no joke. It takes true integrity to accomplish what he did. There is a video of him in 1935 floating around on youtube.
