- Today Simon Mills is back on the podcast, he’s a complementary health pioneer from the inception of the term in 1979, and later in the fields of integrated health, selfcare and social prescription.
Today we talk about specific spices to start getting into your diet and why. We talk about turmeric and the potential mechanism of action in the gut, cayenne pepper, rosemary, sage, ginger and many more! As well as if spices can be prebiotics and whether they have a role in preventing diabetes and dementia.
Simon graduated from University of Cambridge with a degree in medical sciences and has been a herbal practitioner in Exeter since 1977. He was Special Adviser to the House of Lords Select Committee 2000 report on Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
In 2016 he was appointed as Herbal Strategist at Pukka Herbs, leading new initiatives, clinical research, and most recently reducing antibiotic demand which is something we touch on today.
Within herbal medicine, he established the first Masters programme in the USA, writing seminal textbooks, and publishing research including randomised controlled clinical trials.

I live in Afghanistan and we use tumeric, and all other spices daily in our food , we drink green tea daily in summer and black tea in winter . We also use tumeric in our home made toothpaste. Honey is used in home made limonade (most of the time pommegranate) . We prepare and dry vegetables and fruits in summer in the sun , so we are well prepared for winter. Here we have a kind of clay to wash our hair, and use lots of Castor oil. We are in our sixties and don't need a doctor. In winter we make tea of ginger, thyme, lemon, honey and pine needles. We are happy people, having a simple life.
Scorpio, I loved reading your daily protocol, especially using turmeric for your toothpaste. Can you share your recipe? I also have added, local honey and castor oil as part of my daily regimen. Do you add any spices to your green or black tea?
Love this!
Sounds lovely 😍 I love these herbs and spices, also turmeric toothpaste
Coming from Afghanistan that's impressive...! Congratulations , despite the crisis we hear of , still there alot good, wars haven't taken away ❤❤
That is truly living life.
I’m amazed at how I took a small pinch of thyme one day . Didn’t notice anything. It’s supposed to clear the lungs. Next day I took a bigger pinch , half a teaspoon , chewed it into a wad and swallowed it with a mouthful of water. The next day I noticed my lungs! The fullness of breath was back and every breath seemed deeper . I am really impressed with all the spices and how powerful they are!
Is it dried thyme or fresh thyme that you took to get the above result?
Waw lol
My grandson had these little warts all over his body. The doctor gave him a steroid cream and there was no improvement and $100 wasted . I mixed a paste of turmeric and neem oil I applied it for a week and every one of the little wart growths disappeared and never came back.
The Sean Connery of herbs😎
Thank you for this very informative presentation. As a retired registered nurse, I have spent the last 45 years being unhealthy, overweight, and sometimes low energy levels after spending two years on the Indian reservations in Arizona and learning from the people there I have changed my entire concept of medicine. I am now drinking teas, making selves and tonics and tinctures, etc. I just had a full panel of blood work drawn and everything was perfect. I eat a daily soup, made with turmeric, Cayenne, okra, and multiple vegetables. I am now going to start implementing some of the things that I have learned from you. Please keep it up. Thank you.
That's great that you've gotten your health back! Your soup sounds interesting would you mind sharing the recipe? I'm a soup lover and trying to regain my health again also.
@tumbleweeddenise, thank you for sharing that. I hear you in regards to being in health care. I share the same background as you and most definitely have began to change my ways towards health with tinctures, teas, plant based food. What started me was the guilt I felt dispensing medication knowing some were causing more harm than good, while others were to off set side effects and the list only grew longer😢. I am so happy I came across these videos, I will keep learning and growing as health is important.
Nurse, I wish I good health and all the best
Bravo Denise!!!
Good job. I‘VE just started a similar regiment for myself and making a world of difference.Keep up the good work dear lady.
😮
Drinking ginger tumeric and clove tea every day what a little bit of Honey to sweeten.
Feeling good
An easy and tasty way to up your spice consumption is to add them to your morning coffee. I like adding turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, allspice, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg.
I am just wondering how all this spices will taste in a cup of coffee ☕, l drink my coffee ☕ black with mct oil in it with grass-fed butter
@lifeiseverything9 I've added Cayenne pepper to the mix. Everyone needs to experiment to see what they like.
In India there’s no house without turmeric. We apply when kids fall and come home mom wash and put turmeric. Marriage starts with crushing turmeric roots to apply for bride and groom.
So interesting, how different cultures have always used healing herbs. Here in the United States, it’s not part of our daily routine. I think more and more of us are waking up to these powerful herbs, such as turmeric.. I’m watching different video’s, most of them are saying to mix turmeric with milk (a fat) since this is the best way for it to be absorbed in the digestive tract. Mixing it with warm water will not supply the benefits and absorption. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.
I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitus several years ago and prescribed an appropriated drug medication to treat it. My body responded to the prescribed medication so my Doctor, who did his medical training in South Africa, suggested I give Curcumin ( which is the active ingredient of Turmeric) a try as an anti inflammatory. It worked wonders within 48 hours and I've been on it ever since with the only "side effect" being it also cured my diagnosed Fibromyalgia at the same time. A wonderful natural and effective alternative to Big Pharma drugs with all their devastating side effects.
Are you cooking with turmeric or taking it in supplemental form?

Thank you for all this amazing information. One of my favourite drinks is Golden Milk. Turmeric, Ginger, Cinnamon, Black Pepper, Nutmeg & Star Anise mixed with a bit of honey & hot nut milk. All the best spices and great flavour.
Makes sense very good.
MMM so yummy❤
Healthy soils make healthier fruits and vegetables.
Im female and I never get check ups or cancer screenings and I don’t need to do them because I’m eating a healthy diet. Love this talk…
Great presentation. This one, put together with Barbara O'Neill's presentations, are great education for the common man, and a blessing to him, also Jethro Kloss's book, Back To Eden.
You are right add Barbara to the list of experts and these three have vast amounts of experience and knowledge! I never stop learning and the health achievements I’ve made naturally have been astounding compared to the previous years of medications!!! The gaining of wisdom is a beautiful thing!!!!
Babraham O'Neil was given an unfair press WHY
Curcumin...rosemary..oregano GInger🤎 inhibit Cox2 inflammatory response....Cox1/ Cox2 balance ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
Wholeness and Balance Vibration. Thank you both, I drink on an empty stomach every morning tumeric with blackpepper and cayenne pepper. Im 63 i feel like 36, and havent been to a doctor in 15 years. Turmeric, also known as turmeric or turmeric root, is a spice widely recognized for its potential health benefits. Here's a summary of its main benefits:
Anti-inflammatory properties: Curcumin, the main active compound in turmeric, has strong anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce inflammation in the body and alleviate inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and inflammatory bowel diseases.
Antioxidant: Turmeric is rich in antioxidants, which help neutralize free radicals and protect cells against oxidative damage, potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases and premature aging.
Brain health improvement: Studies suggest that curcumin may have neuroprotective effects and potentially reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, as well as improving mood and cognitive function.
Promotion of heart health: Turmeric may help reduce risk factors associated with heart disease, such as high blood pressure, oxidized LDL cholesterol, and inflammation, which may contribute to cardiovascular health.
Support for digestive health: Turmeric may promote digestive health by stimulating bile production by the liver and aiding in the digestion of fats. Additionally, its anti-inflammatory properties may help relieve symptoms of digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.
Potential anticancer effects: Some studies suggest that curcumin may have anticancer effects by inhibiting the growth and spread of cancer cells and helping prevent the development of certain types of cancer.
While turmeric offers a range of health benefits, it's important to note that more research is needed to confirm and fully understand its effects. However, incorporating turmeric into your diet as a spice or supplement may be a simple way to potentially improve your overall health.
I absolutely love cayenne pepper I can eat a whole teaspoon or more of it and it wouldn't bother me at all... I'm absolutely crazy about the pugnant spices that has that punch or kick to it...."And the bitter the better!
Simon makes a good point: just because the research on a compound/natural med is scant, it doesn't mean it's no good etc. Follow the money. You cant patent (+ charge the NHS top dollar for) turmeric, for example. And do the pharmaceutical companies have shareholders?
Thank you very much! Though I am living in Europe originally I am from Africa. Some years back was very difficult to get many of the spices over here , I used to carry most the spices back with me when ever I travel. Nowadays there are many health store they sell every spices from all over the wold which is wonderful. I am glad to hear both of you mentioned all the thing I grew up with and taking them for granted for so long. Now I am subscribed not to miss any thing. Lots of appreciation for both.
Scrolling and found this presentation, all i can say is Wow!! I'm so informative. im sharing to as many persons i know as possible . Blessings.
How much do you take a day turmeric n black pepper for aches n pains in your body ? Thank you
Totally 💯 agree to the host about herb Turmeric, why it is needed? How to use it? It's a detailed explanation on Turmeric. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and thanks to host to bringing it to us. 🙏
My favorite video of all time... I Love this kind of talk 🙏🏿💙💪🏾
This was a very educational presentation. I have been doing some conversations to my daily living, and this convinced that I am on the right path. Thank you, doctors. God bless you.
The point is the real food is the good food and people have forgotten to eat and how to prepare the real food, because the busy life stile we have has turned us into Biological Robots extremely busy and we are not having time to cook from scratch and foods industry love it as we are making them richer every year buying ready meals and other unhealthy ingredients
and them the Doctors richer fixing the damage from processed food with chemicals in it!
Thank you for your wonderful podcast
May God Bless you Two 🙏
The turmeric is what I would go to for relief of cancer . The spices we have in our racks are absolutely amazing in their health benefits ! I’ve been taking 2 cloves every day in the morning before eating . Just chew them up and wash them down with water. I’ve noticed better sleep and less need for sleep , my thumbs have lost their arthritic pain and basic inflammation is less. If I’m working (taper) and I’m on my knees a lot they aren’t sore the next morning. I want to get into the turmeric habit . I’m sure you can’t buy the benefits turmeric provides.
Amazing podcast thank you and God bless you all 🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️❤️

Excellent information on ginger, cinnamon and turmery! How about garlic and oregano?
Also! They play a pivotal role. Garlic is the most effective antibiotic that will prevent a lot of infections. I actually cook almost everything with garlic.

ThanK you for validating the hours of research I do daily to improve mine and my husbands health. We’re in our early 70’s, love to cook, exercise as our inflamed bodies allow, we stopped alcohol recently and don’ t smoke. To be more efficient would I use equal parts (powdered) spices mixed together then take a teaspoon daily as a tea? Or is it better to have them individually
Amazing approach. never heard before that wrong kind of bile quality may be a cause of ibs, ibd and indigestion.
I have IBS. Is it suitable for me to take these supplements ( ginger and turmeric) ? Thanks
I've recently started to consciously improve my probiotics but with my demanding job, I got a bit overwhelmed by by how hard it is to avoid processed foods. I've always been a fan of home made teas en fresh herbs in my food. Thanks to these videos, I'm starting to see a way to make it work, so: THANK YOU!!!!
I even has a few plants growing in n my back yard
Thank you, and well done ❤
I use turmeric as my drink but do not know the benefit of it thank u for the discussion
Thank you for this video very interesting informative easy to understand and readily accessible ingredients
I just, today, discovered your channel, and I have MUCH more looking through the info that I'd like to do, but how about sprouts? Get sprouting jars, or whatever works and some seeds (they're esasy to find and sprout) to add a great fighting punch in our nutrition. I wonder if sprouts have been covered... anyway, God bless you and everyone and Happy New Year 2024!!!
Thanks for the details about tumeric, spicy foods on the digestive system.
May the Arahats and Bodhisattvas be with You Always.
Excellent talk. Garlic was not mentioned and I’m curious about the research since it’s used so much particularly in French cooking. I tend to start most of my dishes with garlic, usually always on top of onions not raw. What are the benefits of garlic?
Thank you for pointing this out, i was having the same question about garlic.
I recently heard once cooked, garlic looses it’s medicinal effect.
He did mention garlic and said it’s healthy but get the smelly one not the unscented garlic. This was about midway through the talk…
llisaree.that is true garlic has to be eaten raw, when you boil garlic it loses all the qualities, so cut blend crush or grate your garlic and eat raw
Chopped garlic, be sure to leave it for 15 minutes to activate Allison, fermented in honey makes a great antibiotic
Excellent podcast, Thanks guys!
Our pleasure! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
They are wonderful information thanks sooooooooo much ❤❤
I have digestive issues. Tried it all & they work. I also use aloe vera & it really helps the tummy.😊❤
What about buying or growing fresh and then freezing or freeze drying? I imagine the phytochemicals in fresh herbs is very high.
Thank you Dr for the video ❤❤
Simon is such a knowledgable and good speaker. Was great to see him again with you Rupy!
❤😊best 👌 podcast lecture subject turmeric and ginger truly informative ❤Lucy watching the brilliant podcast lecture
Grate stuff 🎉🎉
Helps you go to the toilet. I had been noticing recently that I have become prompt in the morning before even eating, and was wondering what I was doing right. It roughly coincides with beginning to add turmeric and back pepper to my chicory coffee in the mornings. I use fresh as much as possible.
How about using quercetin to aid absorption of turmeric.
Everyone in west needs an indian friend to learn about herbs to better their lives
Thanks
Awesome.
Greetings everyone viewing this channel, brilliant job, that's food for thoughts, very good teaching, keep up the good work and may God gentlemen for a job well this is amazing stuff!!

Doctor is there any herbal treatment for kidney nephropathy disesae
Sound is too soft. Can't hear well, due to very low sound.
Please send some recipes and the best spices.
Where are you i have been giving my wife turmenic pure for 14 years. We where australian. She died 5 years ago and she lived longer for 24 years. We introduced black pepper about 5years later.
Excellent
I have to add that turmeric powder also heals wounds. I put a turmeric powder on my dogs wounds and they were a dip punctures and after few days they were healed perfectly. To me it was like a miracle. My son told me about it but I must say I was very sceptical but it worked. So easy, just sprinkle turmeric powder on the wound. Did it on a cats too.
Thanks for that. A couple cats having skin issues (which do improve when I add iron to their food but returns). I’ll give turmeric a go.
Thank you
Thanks for info.i love what you're doing, that's my life,a herbal life, need to grow cardamom and more Asian spices, watching from the commonwealth of Dominica in the Carrigan.

'Micro,' meaning tiny
A rich seam of brilliant info. Is the black Nigella seed from the flower Nigella, aka Love In A Mist?
….not the same there is nigela damascena (Love in a mist) and nigela sativa….(black cumin)….Camagu 👏🏿👏🏿
@@rawamothoa9935 thanks!
On my nutrition course , turmeric is always mentioned as a good thing, etc. But i did hear a chap on YT called Markus Rothkranz (knows a LOT about food etc but isnt as far as i know a nutritionist - i could be wrong) who advises caution with turmeric as it can destroy our good as well as bad microflora in the gut. He says stick more with ginger. SO many opinions! Hmmm!
This is great .... I've missed a lot because the interviewer would laugh or say..right right ,uhuh...over the voice of the other guy.
At one point you might have missed the GHEE with Turmeric to crate an oil-based effect drink.
Turn on CC. I also find it hard to hear or understand when they talk as I am hard of hearing lately. I use headphones and can increase the volume. Great Podcast with wonderful information.. I often use a pen and paper to write down some of the info...I may not hear it correctly bur CC means I can read it ...even if mis- spelled!! LOL!!
This was helpful but I didn't hear a lot about garlic or ginseng. What are the benefits of those spices?
A week a doctor told me that you have Rheutomited Arthirities so how is turmeric prepsred the amount to be taken and the side effects behind it.Again I am a diabetic patient for a long time, i am taking metaformin and glamax how does it affect this.
Why am I so Poorly with cold I eat lots of greens organic big believer in herbs and spices 😮
Have you got a good curry recipe Simon?
Is it the same as making fresh ginger tea? or cinnamon tea?
I don't hear you talking about grounding/ earthing with Clint Over and Dr. Laura Koniver. Grounding connects you to the universe and immediately brings inflammation down by way of the negative electrons.
Good suggestion but I’m sure they can only cover one subject at a time. 🫠. I do use Dr. Koniver’s grounding products. I love the fact that she makes them individually by hand. 👣
Tumeric, mayo and black pepper with vinegar and tin of tuna on high fibre bread
No mention of tinctures which is my preference for delivery.
