    To increase urgency:
    1. Add more to your plate [4:02]
    2. Set miniature deadlines (the time of day) [5:36]
    3. Set bigger goals [6:11]
    4. Create consequences/punishments for failure [6:56]
    5. Seek external accountability [7:36]
To implement this in your life:
    1. Specify what you want and when you'll do it [8:55]
    2. Write down #1 [10:00]
    3. Add a reason (urgency) to do #1 [11:01]

  • @adityayanbhardwaj7131
    @adityayanbhardwaj7131 Před 4 lety +42

    Urgency method
    1) *add more to your plate* - add more tasks in your day so that if you procrastinate a single task then it will impact another task.
and it creates fear that you will lose other tasks or you can say it creates a sense of urgency. When you add more task you demand more time it means it creates urgency.
2)*setting deadline* instead of saying what
you have to do it say what and when you have to do it.
    3) *bigger goal means enormous urgency* But be careful you don't have to be overwhelmed by this. The bigger goal can be achieved by breaking down into small chunks and completing those small chunks on time gives you motivation
    4) *consequences* if you don't do this task then you have to do a task you don't like or the result of not doing this task is not good so do it now.
    5) *accountability* like someone is watching you
It's similar when your mom is watching you then you have to complete your homework
You can ask your friend to do this or telling 2-3 people that you are going to do a task so they automatically observe you are doing it or not. You know people are much concerned about others.
Or you can use an app that tracks your time e.g. Rescue time.
    Bonus
*clarity* - what, when and why I am going to do a specific time.
~I am going to study~ I am going to study at 10 a.m. about human anatomy for my tomorrow's test
Alright after reading this comment *go and do you stuff stop scrolling CZcams videos you don't have time you idiot Go-Go do your shit NOW*

Parkinsons's Law: The task will fill up the given time, no matter how much time you have. > Solution for procrastination: add urgency to tasks
    1. Fill your time/schedule up so you have to use the task's given time to do it. 'Have a greater demand for time than supply'
    2. Set miniature deadlines.
    3. Set even bigger goals, but don't get overwhelmed.
    4. Creating consequences/punishments.
    5. Accountability, have someone or a program (eg RescueTime) watch over what you are doing.

    • @SayuriYaki
      @SayuriYaki Před 4 lety +2

I want to share my experince with these however. I am desperately trying to get procrastination into control but didn't find a way yet. :( No hate though, much appreciate the channel and videos he does!
Parkinsons's Law: In general true, but it doesn't cover how the quality of the work decreases with less time. Also with bigger projects this can fail and the task won't get finished, happened often to me.
      1. No freetime sounds horrible to me, I guess this works but I also imagine myself crying at night. The 'time blocking' method may be a more loosened up way to do this and it's cool but I just cannot stick to the schedules I plan for myself so that's no help for me.
      2. Miniature deadlines are cool but don't work for me if there are no >4. consequences.
      3. Set even bigger goals... but my brain knows that I just need to achieve the smaller goal, not sure how I can trick it into believing we are doing the big goal but actually just do the small one? Maybe I misunderstood the point here.
      4. Consequences helped me with habit building in the past, however it's not very practical to set a punishment for every tiny task on hand. Also it's kind of hard to find the sweet spot of a punishment that hurts you but isn't too hard because either I would sacrifice essential stuff (eg sleep, working out, university course) or once failed I would delete that consequence because I suffered too much.
      5. Being watched works kind of works with people but I often catch myself looking productive but actually procrastinating quite a lot. Didn't work with RescueTime for me though. :(

There was no room for "oops I forgot or didn't finish". No "I'll do that after I finish reading this, and that." Now that I stay home all the time I get very little art finished. Thank you for this!!

  • @TheMusicLauncher
    @TheMusicLauncher Před 4 lety +11

A big problem is that we have a need of feeling safe and protected. The world around us has changed, but our bodies and our minds haven't for about 5,000 years. Back in the days being left alone meant certain death for us. A handicapped person would not survive on their own and a broken bone could get us killed. We *had* to relay on other humans in order to survive.
But as time passed and things got easier, we lost use of our instincts. At this modern area all our instics are tricking us into becoming depressive, useless and sad. We live in a fast world, where being different is managable and survivable, but boring and no use.
We are highly social animals with an incredbile mind. The worst thing about this all is that we begin to become numb and feel isolated. We start to feel like we live in a dream and it gets harder to remember things.
As humans we need to move and use our bodies. We were made to run in dirt and sweat. Todays food is just providing us with the basics, there are nearly no nutritions our body can use to supply us with the needed vitamins and fibers. We need to challange our mind, find new ways to start things and interact with other humans, instead of writting a short message on WhatsApp.
Times did not get easier, but different. Since social media everyone can have an opinion and share it with everybody else, we feel pressured into feeling guilty and sad because of all the problems the world sees. Things seem to become worse and worse.
Mediating and using your body (training) will get you back to awareness of your surroundings. One doesn't need to become a Stoic or some kind of believer, but rather accept things and move on. Overthinking doesn't help, we need to start at some point.
Read some books, use your imagination. For what time do we have left and if we don't watch out, it's already over.

One more tip from personal experience.
If I'm not deliberate with my breaks then I get overwhelmed and end up procrastinating. What I mean is that because I don't set time to do meaningful rests and I'm just trying to push work, my brain obviously get's tired, I lose focus and end up scrolling something I don't even care about, because I am out of steam to keep going. Also, because I knew that if I start working I basically wouldn't allow myself to leave it until 10PM, I procrastinated on the start in the mornings.
TAKE BREAKS! Allow yourself to genuinely relax! Seriously, after a week of pushing my schoolwork way into the nights, I ended up taking a day off and just enjoying some videogames (the weather was too shitty to go outside). Now I feel much better, less cranky, and more able to progress with quality output. I just need to keep this in mind and take some time off every now and then (it's not easy to find the balance).

I think one has to realize that adding urgency to your life makes you possibly more productive but not necessarily more happy. Furthermore, even if you specify a task to do in great detail this does not make you do it. Procrastination tells you something about what is wrong in your life, there is usually a pretty good reason for it, and no artificial trick will help you to cope with it in the long run, but only figuring out this reason does. Maybe the reason is just something like "my job sucks". It is wrong to try to improve your working habits under this condition. Change your job instead.

I'm 17 years old and doing extremely well in school and in my health, exercising regularly and sleeping well thanks to your videos and other channels. Although this is overshadowed by a deep problem with choosing effective actions to achieve my goals. I seem to be following a standard route and doing well in school but I have always wanted to start a business and would love to dedicate my time towards a venture to help push the envelope of technology but I always find myself starting pointless projects which consume time without really thinking about a long term vision for my future. If possible, i would greatly appreciate your input on choosing effective actions and knowing where to even start with such an abstract goal and how you came to choose youtube instead of another path.

What's the reason behind wanting to push the envelope of technology? Is it to help others, is it too make a name for yourself, make money etc. Think about your reasons and the ultimate outcome you want, and then it'll be easier to identify the real goal (and a project which ticks all the boxes) and then to break it down into effective/manageable pieces. Then schedule those smaller chunks into your calendar.

Your English is fine. Just should have used it instead of he when referring to the gas. So far I have seen they use he only for human males and some animals.

@@User-jr7vf Oh yeah, that mistake is coming from my french haha. We use male and female denomination for objects, that is weird when we think about it but french is how it is haha

6:13 I disagree with this. Many olympians set out to get a gold medal. The majority don’t. Why is this? Because the winners have small habits carried out day by day to reach the goal, and they do it long term. The gold medalist has likely said, I want to train for 6 hours a day 6 days a week. Would they reach their goal of a gold medal by doing this? Yes it is very likely if they have a habit of training smart and hard. However many fail to focus on the small stuff. The small daily habits which compound over time. This is what causes them to not reach their big goal they initially set out to complete.

Not sure if creating more urgency in one's life a good thing.

It depends upon context. If someone is just sitting on the couch wasting their life then they kinda need some urgency.
