That photo of Sgt Buckner with his 3 brothers is a powerful image. 4 sons in the Marine Corps during ww2, god bless their mother. What these men saw and did in their 20s, it’s unbelievable. You sir are a national treasure. Your brother seemed like the type of man that had he been able to see the end of the war, would have came home with a chest full of medals. At least he got to die in the arms of someone he loved, so much more than what was afforded to so many others. These guys were built different.

There are videos of world war two veterans talking with vets from Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan vets. It wasn't a different type of war. War is very horrible. We owe veterans us voting in politicians who think before sending troops and who definitely work on diplomacy when that is feasible. The axis powers in Japan snd Germany were certainly terrible.

The story of watching helplessly from above while an enemy soldier makes his way to Ray knowing there’s a very good chance he’s about to watch his brother die is beyond upsetting. These are a special breed of people who can accept the realities and brutality of war while compartmentalizing that horror in order to lead productive and righteous lives full of empathy, compassion, and virtue. Thank you for providing the opportunity for these heroes to tell their truths while they still can-it’s important and they deserve it.

If you look at the shadow cast behind Sgt. Buckner you can see that the brim of his glasses cast a shadow that almost looks like he's wearing an Aemrican M1 helmet. I thought that was rather fitting that even though this man has lived a long life the part of his life that is his main identity is he as a soldier. I don't think any man who becomes a soldier ever truly stops becoming a soldier even long after the war ended.

So, schools can't avoid teaching kids about that. Democracy is a process. We have a sacred debt to veterans but we owe them a loyalty to the checks and balances of freedom. We have to make society better.

I can’t even imagine being with your brother trying to tell him it’s going to be ok and he knows he’s dying but bullets are coming in the tent and you as a brother still cover him up and protect him going threw hell. That’s the bravest of the bravest and he is the best of the best.....this one touched me a little more being my name is Ray, so it was almost like he was talking to me when he would say Ray’s name and I got a little choked up. Hats off to you Sir and I wish I could be as strong as you..... God Bless

Very brave . I can’t even imagine what he went thru I have such respect for him and his fellow marines. When he died I went to see his grave and was told by his boss where he worked that my father was not right.
