#OSMF ‘An insidious chronic disease affecting any part of the oral cavity and sometimes the pharynx. Although occasionally preceded by and/or associated with vesicle formation, it is always associated with a juxta-epithelial inflammatory reaction followed by a fibro-elastic change of the lamina propria, with epithelial atrophy leading to stiffness.’
Symptoms
1.Xerostomia
2.Recurrent ulceration
3.Pain in the ear or deafness
4.Nasal intonation of voice
5.Restriction of the movement of the soft palate
6.A budlike shrunken uvula
7.Thinning and stiffening of the lips
8.Pigmentation of the oral mucosa
9.Dryness of the mouth and burning sensation (stomatopyrosis)
10.Decreased mouth opening and tongue protrusion
Causes
Tobacco and Areca nut products, generally known as pan masala, mawa, gutkha
chillis
Areca nuts contain high copper concentrations
smoking
nutritional deficiency

Oral submucous fibrosis affects the oral tissue of the buccal mucosa, lips, soft palate, and occasionally the pharynx.
CLINICAL FEATURES
burning sensation,
dry mouth,
blanching oral mucosa
ulceration.
reduce mouth opening
inability to blow
sunken face appearence
