- On a chilly morning in Boston in February of 1995, a State Police Helicopter would suddenly plummet from the sky and into the Harvard Yacht Club, located on the Charles River. This is the story of that fateful flight.

Old helo pilot here. Once you lose engine power, all you can do is enter an autorotation and attempt to keep your airspeed and main rotor rpm within acceptablle limits while you frantically search for a place to crashland. 45° descent sounds about right. With 4 souls onboard, they would’ve been heavy (not good for an auto). 800’ elevation was probably sufficient to set up for a crashlanding, but it all happens very quickly. Blinking lights and audio alarms would be flashing/beeping in the cockpit at that point. I’m sure the pilot did the best he could, but any auto is dangerous. In a little helo like that, I’d prefer dry land to water.
You could do a few more moves.
Seems like most medical helos, and smaller ones like this have the fuel tank above your heads right?
@@111CREWGO69ZEHZlike Bob Seger’s night moves
Auto rotation doesn't 'keep the helicopter airborne' it slows the descent and buys time to locate a suitable emergency landing site.
Semantics.
It wouldn't have mattered since both the compressor and fuel were bad.
@@katemaloney4296 Not really, it implies that if it did keep a helicopter airborne, you'd only need to turn on the engine to take off and then once airborne you could turn it off and happily fly around. Whereas in reality, auto rotation is delaying (and dampening) the 'crash'- it's like saying parachutists 'fly'.
Here I was spinning,
@@katemaloney4296 The engine doesn't need to be running to auto rotate, you just need to have airflow through the rotors - the only thing is once you've committed to a landing site, there's no going back.
In Alaska I did mountain rescue as a volunteer.
It was in 1990 through 1998. I flew in lots of different kinds of helos including a pave hawk. It was awesome and I really enjoyed it. Now at 53 you couldn't get me in a helicopter to save my life.
Couldn't get me in a yacht club
Lol...I don't blame you. Though riding in a Pave Hawk would've been a fantastic experience. I flew once in an R22 and it felt like flying in a phone booth.
My God, I would never do that.
What possessed you to do such a thing? Genuinely curious, btw.
Just because those damn things are known death traps.
👍✌️@Tubesmaney
Flew in an AS-B50 A-Star as a critical care flight paramedic for 7 years. We lost 2 in a 10 year period and I buried 6 of my close friends. I missed the first crash because someone else swapped shifts with a co-worker. He'd had asked me to be his backup if the his first choice was unavailable. This helicopter will always be the Death Star to me.
Out of curiosity, how many were due to mechanical issues? Was an EMT pilot back in the day, and we lost two Sikorsky 76’s, both due to pilots getting themselves into black hole illusions, which was always a danger since we didn’t incorporate NVG’s(which finally came after the second crash). Flying at night is a dangerous business, no matter if it’s a single engine Astar or a $20M AW139
@@crazyralph6386 The first was controlled flight into terrain due to spatial disorientation. The second was mechanical while over water at night. An autorotation was attempted, but pilot pulled pitch too soon. As you may suspect, there are minimal points of reference at night and over water. The aircraft landed in about 6 feet of water, right skid down. The engine became dislodged due to impact and went through the crew compartment, killing the flight nurse, flight paramedic, and pilot.
“Park the copter in Harvard yacht club”
I would like to hear this in a fake Boston accent.
Pahk the cahptah in hahvahd yahcht club ked
Great episode. Watched it at 16x speed so I could comment within a minute of it coming out.
You cheeky bastaad😂
No cheating sir.
Ha ha! the fun would be found in slowing the video down even further.
Bro speedrunning videos now 😭
why not just say first? based on yr post you needed have bothered watching 😂🎉
Very lucky the yacht club was empty at the time, though I wonder if some would have survived a ditching if they'd managed to get it on the water. RIP 🤍 One correction... an auto-rotation is the technique helicopters use to make an emergency landing, rather than anything to do with the engine itself cutting out. In essence, a pilot can use the air flowing over the rotor blades as they fall back towards the ground to keep the blades rotating without the engine (hence auto-rotation), and this provides them with a small amount of lift & control to get the bird on the ground in one piece.
It's quite an ingenious use of physics, and all pilots train for auto-rotation landings until they are second nature because you have literally seconds to recognise the engine failure, pick a spot to try to put it down, and auto-rotate.
Great explanation thanks 👍
Yeeeessssssss a new morbid midnight vid. Thank you sooooooo much for your content.
Crazy, with Yacht Club in the title I was expecting a tragedy at sea. Nope
Not at all lol
Good stuff.
Thank you for making another fascinating video, they are always excellent.
WOW! Thank you for this! I was living in Beacon Hill when this happened. My usual jog took me past the Harvard structure. I remember wondering how the crash didn't completely destroy the building. Charles River was very icy, and Memorial drive was busy. Those pilots did the very best that they could. I'm realizing that now. Great work!
This is so informative! Great job, fantastic reporting!🌻🌼🐝 Keep it up 🙌
Thanks for the episode, Midnight. Take care
Excellent video and investigative info. Thanks for another job well done.
Another fascinating episode, great work.
I've only been in a helicopter 1 time. My Dad and I flew over Alcatraz and the SF bay for 30 minutes. This was back in 1982. I was 12 years old.
Such a beautiful memory.
Thanks Dad. RIP 🙏
You could of autorotated into oblivion
So tragic! Great detailed coverage! Ten minutes for first responders to arrive seems like a long time considering where they were!
I grew up near Boston. I've been on a few helicopter rides over the Charles River (it's a common tourist attraction or was back in my day). I always loved seeing the people in the parks as little ants. I haven't been in one since around '85. Probably best! Great content, thank you!
Cool video! One minor correction - Harvard is in Cambridge (not Boston) the Charles divides the two cities. And it's pronounced phonetically "Came-bridge" the A is like in "Came".
Toe-may-toe, toe-mah-toe.
There's a pic of this at my ambulance base but the old timers are gone! Thanks for telling this story!
This was in Cambridge by the way, a separate city from Boston
you deserve and will soon have more subs
In addition to the other corrections about autorotations, it is also incorrect to say that it “forces air into the engine”: autorotation uses the upwards flow of air to maintain the inertia in the rotor blades, and then, just before landing, using that energy to slow the helicopter’s descent to a safe landing speed. (Remember the old aviation axiom: a safe landing is any one you can walk away from.)
Thank you!!
Another great video. It's an odd paradigm relaxing to videos about death.
tyvm for another upload 🤟
🫎🇨🇦😁
Autorotation is the emergency procedure used to maintain main rotor RPM during engine power failures.
Would have liked to finish watching this but it sounds like theres just randomly chosen pauses between words and its driving me fkn bananas in all honesty. I just cant do it.
gotta playback his videos at 1.25 speed, buddy
if what we pieced together is actually the truth. Man, this is EXACTLY why i hate helicopters, but also; bravo to the pilot who had the composure to try and avoid more deaths. That's a heroic act
Another great video! Thanks for sharing. Also thanks to the cool fans for sharing extra information. This story is wild, but the state police should stop escorting these high profile corporations unless they are paying millions to replace the tax money and time spent on them. Not right, like those cops that gets to watch the every NFL game from the sidelines. NFL better be paying for that.
Now you gotta make merch with the AS350 on it.
This reminded me of a helicopter disater where I went to school in Derry, PA. It was Labot Day 78 at a church festival and 8 people died with more than a dozen injured.
Do a show on that.
Oh wow something other than a mountain climbing video good job
why be rude? if it's not your type of content then watch another channel, rebecca.
you should make a video about the Oso mudslide in Washington state in 2014. Its the deadliest landslide in American History
Interesting set of circumstances that lead to this incident 🤔 all it would have taken to prevent is proper maintenance.
So the helicopter did get to Logan Airport, but without its passengers.
I think the voice is very suitable for a channel called “Morbid Midnight”
I once (decades ago) had an opportunity to fly in a police helicopter run by the Hayward/Alameda county Park Police. There were two helicopters in the hangar but curious, I asked what happened to that one pointing. The officer laughed saying periodically we have to take these things apart down to the last nut to inspect and make sure they're in good running order. It's expensive and time consuming but that should make you feel better about the ride you're about to get. I was making a police training video based on cultural differences. What an experience, real professionals.
Another great video. Your narration is fine. Keep up the great content.
The AS350 has a long, long list of incidents, going all the way back to the 80s. Methinks you could do a series on this copter alone. Also I too, thought it was going to be about yachts, not a helicopter
That looks like I-5 through Portland.
maintenance isn't sexy but it sure is important.
Maintenance is incredibly sexy. my chick gets so turned on when I take care of her car for her. Don't wait for things to go wrong to service your vehicles. All mechanical problems are preventable with proper service and inspection
Is it just me or is his voice slower than in his older videos?
Autorotation is a phenomenon that allows a helicopter to land after an engine or tail rotor failure. Helicopters use a free wheel system which allows the main rotor to turn even if the engine is completely locked up. As the machine falls, the rushing air causes the rotor to start turning…its kinetic energy stored as inertia from the mass and speed of the rotor. It then allows for a few seconds of last minute recovery as the inertia is used up and the speed of the rotor drops swiftly. It buys the opportunity for one last minute flare to occur, arresting the descent and saving both the lives of the occupants as well as the chopper itself. It’s something that all helicopter pilots are drilled on many times, as they can simulate an engine failure and perform an autorotation landing at any time.
It has nothing to do with the engine. Autogyro aircraft also use autorotation, as the motor is only connected to the pusher propeller…the rotor spins freely. It’s basically a rotor wing aircraft that behaves more like an airplane, and they are pretty easy to fly as well.
Play at least at x1.25 speed or you’ll be hypnotised and fall asleep
Yeah the cadence/pace of his voice is off as hell. Sounds like hes putting unnecessary pauses between random ass fkn words lol.
I love and hate helicopters
Me too
Mannnnnnnnnnn we're ALREADY on our way to 80k...............
Back when I was getting my private pilots license (fixed wing), my flight instructor liked to "shit talk" helicopters. "Airplanes fly, helicopters just beat the air into submission."
For the mighty algorithm gods 🍻
TD Garden overhead from 5:17 🍀
As a local Boston resident somehow I hadn't heard of this accident. Salute to our MSP officers that don't fake their timesheets. RIP to those lost in this tragedy
Mass State Cops, delinquent on maintenance. Who's job was it? Mike Dukakis
Brings me back to Day Z, ahhh get to the euro choppa!
Read up on auto rotation for your next helo video.
yasssss
It seems that a police helicopter would be equipped with a black box.
The first 1:30 sure was useless fluff.
I went to Harvard. Yaught Club one time.
1.25x speed as is tradition.
Morbid Midnight has NO IDEA how a helicopter works.
And you are a pompous idiot...
Shed no tears for the corrupt MSP. Fortunately nothing aside from the helo was lost.
Wow a whole 1:32 before the second commercial. Stop, you’re spoiling us.
Yes, be resentful of the creator trying to make a living
You should ask for a refund.
Did you deliberately state the technical aspects incorrectly to provoke comments?
I have never heard anybody else speak so slowly and unemotionally attached to what they are saying 😕
Its like you are a depressed robot 🤖
Thank you for not another mountain climbing video
the narrorator must take horse tranquilizers before he reads the script....he should shock the viewers and read the next one like he took a bottle of adderall
Just talk faster.
I like to set playback speed between .75 and .85. That way I'm sure I don't miss anything.
Bro, speak faster. The playback speed shouldn’t be changed to 125%. You’re like that kid who needs to get another 100 words his report so he stretches every single point
If you’re going to use a robot voice to narrate than speed it up. Narration is like pulling teeth. So slow.
Bro, good video very informing on history. But just have the narrator talk a little bit faster please
