BOOK REVIEW: "Illusions" by Richard Bach

  • The beauty of a book like "Illusions" by Richard Bach is taking a simple series of parables and using them to help you view the workings of the universe in a slightly new way. Despite a title speaking of messiahs, this book is far removed from being religious and offers a beautiful perspective on life.

Illusions entered my life as a gift from my younger brother. Have read it over at least once a year for the last 36 years. “It’s all illusions!”

I stumbled upon this book in my college. There's a wall leading to the cafeteria. There is a shelf on this wall where you can leave a book and take a book. Walking out of the cafeteria, I decided to take a look and surely enough this book was staring me in the face. I picked it up and pulled an i-ching, turning to a random page and stumbled upon this quote:
"Learning is finding out what you already know. Doing is demonstrating that you know it."
I pondered that quote for a moment (standing in the middle of a hallway like a dolt), and after I realized how deep that one quote had made me think, I decided this book needed to come with me. I think it's fate that I found it, and I can't help but wonder who left it there only for me to grab it. Perhaps I'll leave it there when I graduate for another lost soul to find.

I read Johnathon Livingston Seagull and Illusions in my early 20s. I really enjoyed them and kept the books, but now I'm in my early 70s and Finnally understand the depth of the messages. Better late then never. It's at this stage of my life when I needed to revisit these books the most. In youth you van be stupid and have years to work it out. At my current age, each day is a gift and treasure. Both books meen a lot to me.

I pulled this book off my shelf today for the first time in years and then came upon your review. It found me in NYC late 1990s, starving artist, daily meal budget $2 - street pretzel or cup o' soup for dinner? Going back to it again, the depth is even more apparent. Oh the power of books!

In 1983 my Dad pinched it off of his best friend's bookshelf. In 2016 he chucked it on the end of my bed and told me he thought I'd enjoy it. I read the first chapter and decided that even though I was hungover I needed to get up and find a better location to read it. I chucked it in my bag and went and sat at the top of the white cliffs of Dover and read it cover to cover, a few days later I did the same again. I must have read it about 12 times that summer while I was 18. I plan on throwing at my own hungover childrens' feet one day and I hope it has as greater affect on them as it did my Father and me.

I barely recall what I said in this video 5 years ago, but I know I was in a very judgmental period of my life. I likely made some remarks about the inferiority of those who fail to grasp this book. Perhaps that is why you noted your lack of appreciation in your comment. However, I no longer feel that way. My journey in life isn't to condemn the journey of others. Whether you love _Illusions_ , or hate it, or are indifferent to it, makes you no greater or lesser than anyone else. Although, I hope you enjoy, simply so the process of reading it will be pleasantly worthwhile.

It is strange. In the story, Richard will open the book to a random page to seek guidance. Tonight, after finishing this book and watching this, I decided to give it a go. The page I opened to reads..."Perspective - Use it or lose it. If you turned to this page, you're forgetting that what is going on around you is not reality. Think about that. Remember where you came from, where you're going, and why you created the mess you got yourself into in the first place. You're going to die a horrible death, remember. It's all good training, and you'll enjoy more if you keep the facts in mind." So, from this, I got a bit of a laugh. But yes, this book is one that I have been lucky enough to come across, and has challenged my views. Also, Ishmael by Daniel Quinn is another very eye opening book. The universe is strange sometimes....

I think in a way, that's Don or the Is preventing it from ever happening. I would love to watch it, but I don't know if it should ever happen. It's too special, isn't it? I think it would be wonderful to watch. But at what cost?

Zack Snyder gave the rights back to Richard in 2015. Richard made it known to Snyder that he wanted to see the movie made before he died, and since Snyder was so wrapped up on one DC comic-book project after another, he had the decency to give it back to Richard... and Richard then announced on his website (which is now defunct) that he has since ceased all plans to make it into a movie.

There was a time when I thought that he was a "guru" and could teach
people some of the secrets of the Universe... until I learned that, when
he got his first great amount of money, he divorced his wife with SIX
children ( he spent many years without seeing his kids), then he found
his "soulmate", married her only to leave her later for a woman 30 years
younger ONE MONTH after having divorced form his "soulmate". You can
say that many philosophers also had problems in life. But, well, now he
is another ordinary guy that wrote some good books. Not a "Guru", not a
"Master", not a spiritual man at all.

    • @EricMussBarnes

Agreed. And the worst part is, people like that forever justify those actions and say it's "part of the journey" or some other hogwash. No matter how selfish people behave, they always find a way to justify their actions and forgive themselves.
