Marvel Zombies Review: It's Zombicide Light Edition

  • Marvel Zombies is an exciting addition for seasoned Zombicide players, offering a fresh PvP mode. It's a straightforward choice for newcomers seeking a Marvel superhero experience, with high-quality miniatures and numerous expansions. But it's more of a "Zombicide light" edition, primarily appealing for its Marvel theme rather than deep mechanics, and lacks the campaign elements found in Zombicide's second edition modern version.

I must say, my group loved Marvel Zombies much more than fantasy version (Black Plague etc.), for us, the fun is not that one finds a good weapon and kills everything when other people sit in the corner and search for something that can kill abominations.. We are glad this is not the case in MZ and the game is much more gameplay and combat focused than searching a pile of rubble half the game :)

Same here. While Black Plague was the first miniatures game we finished over a couple months, we really don't miss having to run from an Early spawned Abomination till someone found the needed items to kill it. In Marvel Zombies we feel everyone has a chance to kill and have fun.

Undead or alive have multiple campaigns.
One comes with an expansion and CMON made a 2nd one to download online.
I really enjoy undead or alive.
This one I am still waiting on the delivery.

Thank younfor the review, and it's good to hear some critique of MZ. I am about to get some sort of Zombicide game and look for different views.
I hope to see good reviews of 2nd edition and Black Plague amongst your videos.

Funnily enough, I don't thin kI ever got around to reviewing them. Perhaps it's time for a second edition review though.

Great review! I appreciate the commentary and the suggestions of how to bring something new to the formula using the expansions (if you backed the KS or can get your hands on those). I just got my box and will probably be painting for weeks to get the two "core" boxes done along with the Sinister Six box as my crew at home are pretty hard to motivate to play a standard Z-cide game these days.

Are you saying Zombicide 2nd edition has deeper mechanics than Marvel Zombies? Campaign aside...

    • @TabletopDungeon
      @TabletopDungeon  Před 5 měsíci

Yes. The doors, and the equipment management, both add more to the gameplay depth than this new traits mechanic or eating/saving randoms.

This review is bias azz hell 😅. At the 7 minute mark he going on about how good Zombicide 2nd edition is with it's campaign and comparing that to Marvel Zombicide Core box 😐 and calling the marvel Zombicide core box a " Zombicide light edition ". Isn't it true for every Zombicide core box? Every Zombicide core box gets better with expansions. Right after that he goes on about having to many options 😅 for marvel Zombicide characters. I know people will complain about not having enough options but complaining about having too many options is insane 😅 a person like will complain about any little thing and make it a big deal. Also if you want hard gameplay try opening that Hydra Resurrection and guardians of the galaxy set to add both red skull and Thanos in the mix plus throw in the sentinels just because on any mission...you won't win 😅. He will probably make a 2nd video complaining how trash marvel Zombicide is and how it's unwinnable 😏.

Light doesn't mean easy, it means simplified. As is, less depth, less strategy, less dramatic tension. I would compare to a MZ campaign, but there isn't one.

@@TabletopDungeon I like how you didn't deny the fact that you did compare Marvel Zombicide core box to Zombicide 2nd edition with the campaign expansion 😅. That seems fair 😏. Also to pick a topic (light games) that doesn't have a definition it has many but I will play. You said light doesn't mean easy, it means simplified. That I can agree with you. While the rest I cannot. You said that light games have less strategy 🧐...that depends on the light game you are playing. You also said that light games have less dramatic tension again that depends on the light game you are playing. We can go on and on about what is and it's a light game and we will both be wrong and right. Now let's be fair for a second. Let's compare the Core box to the core box. What makes Zombicide 2nd edition a medium game compared to Marvel Zombicide? Now I have to assume you think Zombicide 2nd edition is a medium game because your title of the video is calling marvel Zombicide a light version to Zombicide.

@@jrod5113 To be clear, I don't _dislike_ Marvel Zombies. But it is a streamlined - or what I would call "light" - version of zombicide. The characters are fixed, and their skills are set in stone, right down to their attacks. The heroes have one attack, and one skill per level, which is often an enhanced version of their basic attack. In regular zombicide, attacks are entirely the player choice - up to two weapons, plus various other equipment. And you get a choice of orange or red skills, so you customise your character a little further. That alone makes it a simplified version compared to main core box.

@@TabletopDungeon I can see why you like Zombicide 2nd edition more than Marvel Zombicide. In the Zombicide 2nd Edition core box you are playing as a regular person(no overpowered moves but some weapons can be 😅)and you can customize it a little more to suit your play style. A more realistic zombie feel and the abominations spawns are deadly. You wouldn't want to run towards them by yourself. While in Marvel Zombicide you are playing as a powerful hero/villain. When an enemy hero/villain(abomination) does spawn we are excited for the fight and want the challenge. You feel like you are playing as a super hero or villain 💪 and no two heroes/villains are the same (core box) they play differently because of the abilities they have. So even though the core mechanics are pretty much the same from both core boxes along with using the same amount of actions (depending on the character you can do more actions) both games feel like they play differently and that's good. That being said I still don't think one version is lighter than the other. They are both Zombicide games at the core. If one is considered a light version they both are. Analogy time😅... let's say we both are buying a house and decided to pick the same floor plan/same house around 2k square feet. On your house you decide to upgrade your kitchen a little more than mine but I have decided to upgrade the restrooms a little more 😅 and both houses at the end ended up costing the same. Now If I ask you which house is better it's not even a question it's yours 💯%. My reply would be no it's mine 😅. When in reality our house is in the same category as a medium size home. They are both equally as good as the other. Just our taste are different.

@@jrod5113i think he meant it is streamlined which is not a bad thing. In older zombicide the attacks are not fixed.. you have combination of weapons. Some heroes cannot even kill a brute if his weapon is weak so they trade weapons which adds to the strategy. Sometimes they trade plenty of bullets, flashlight, dynamite, etc. Noise mechanic is gone. Everyone can open doors without weapons that can open doors. Friendly fire is gone for range attacks. You can't combine items. You can also choose orange and red skills. Etc.
