- Hello everyone today we will be discussing addon linker for Microsoft flight simulator 2020. This is the best application to manage and organize your addons and mods. This can also help with ctd's as now you won't have to put all of your mods inside the community folder thus slowing things down and possibly causing a crash. Now only put in the community folder what you need for that flight. Also we go over some of the best features of addon linker like presets and batch or auto starting of applications. Before we do all that we will go over the download and the install of the application then go through the entire setup for the app to function correctly. Also if you have the bravo throttle quadrant and would like Free 737 knobs, Flap detents and other items check out our facebook group (link Below) I provide all of the 3d files for you to download and print yourself all of the files i created and thus no copywrite issues. I also provide 3d printing service for those that do not have access to a 3d printer. I resolved the problem by right clicking on the executable file and then selected trouble shoot compatibility . Windows resolved whatever the problem was. Thank you for your responses and must of all thank you for the best MSFS utility ever !!!

DDDDUUUUUDDDDDEEEE, this is amazing. I wound up dumping my entire community folder and starting over with this addon. What I like about it most is it allows me to rename the scenery. A lot of them have crazy names so all of my scenery is named the following way State, City, Scenery Object Name. If I can figure out how to sort them alphabetically in the Addon Linker then I can have everything sorted by state to make it so much easier to select what addons I want to use.

@@2020fsers I figured it out, it does them automatically. All you have to do is click on another asset after you rename one and it will move it into alphabetical order.

Thanks yes that's what I did and remove all the addons and organize them then use addon linker to input the addons that you want to use on that flight
Finally a clear guide on how, so basically the actual community folder will be empty?, quick question I got the PMDG 737 do I put it also on the folder that it was created or just keep normal when I first installed it?

So for planes like the pmdg or should I say install like pmdg, that use a separate app, I allow the app to put the file directly into my community just so it doesn't mess up anything with updates. And yes the community would be empty unless addonlinker has shortcuts placed in there. You need to untick an addon and then it will remove the shortcut from the community

Great thank you . I will say if you dont have a gaming laptop your may be but if not don't do any overclocks the fans in there cannot really handle it and quite possible even a gaming laptop . Air flow is crucial when overclocking. Just my 2 cents

Hi thank you for the video, very clear explanation. I have a question, for FlyByWire items should I just leave all in the custom folder I made, or can I take each one of their products to different folders? - if yes, they still update?
I would leave the fbw stuff where it installs to not mess with any updates using the fbw installer . Thanks for the comment .
I don't know it any answer the question about fast launch or not, but I think it applies to fast launch options in the steam setting general tab.
So if you go to your steam account if you have one, go to settings then click on General and here you'll have an option that says launch options, you can type in -FastLaunch just like this and when you launch msfs it will skip the intro videos and go strait to the main menu screen of msfs.
It's just to load in the sim faster by skipping the intro basically.

Great video. Quick question... if there's an ADDON you absolutely always use. Do you need to add it to all presets or can you just leave it in community folder?
You can do either or. Just remember when you have a Microsoft. Update to the simulator to remove all of the ad ones that you still have in your community folder so they don't get deleted by accident.
Love this tool. Can you setup different launch applications to each preset??

Thanks so much for this video, now i was able to install and Use addon linker ! One question.... what about updating programs? For example I use GSX Pro wich I also installed via Addon linker now, but when it updates, it is going to update files in the community folder. Should I first put back the original files into the community folder then?

Thanks for the comment ... yes take all your mods and place them in the new folder you created . Then check the ones you want to use in the linker.
I tried to do that and for some reason its not letting me. My community folder seems to have a locked icon by it "Your organization does not allow you to place this file here"
Can you right click on the community folder and go to properties make sure you can read and write to it. Something on your pc is blocking you .
@@2020fsers I wasnt able to do anything but I can still get the new mods put in the organization folders of linker guide. Luckily I only had maybe 9 mods before I saw this video and all tbm liveries which STILL work and show up, they just wont go into linker. No worries! Appreciate your videos!

Hi there, for the store dvd or steam (fast launch) version; will bypass the xbox asabo logo and black shark ai startup screens and this will reduce the startup time.
Yes it will bypass all of that. I also suggest to tick the box to start in high priority mode .

Unfortunately if it's from the marketplace I think it will automatically be put in the sim and not in the community folder. So for marketplace stuff this will not work for. Unless someone knows something I don't which is very possible

Thanks for the comment .. no you don't just update the file folder of the mod inside the folder you use for addonlinker . Think of the addonlinker folder as your community folder . But only the items you check will be used.

One question, when installing new mods or whatever, should they be installed directly into the respective created folders or installed into the community folder then copy to the created folders like your video shows?
You can install new addons directly into their respective folders that you created .
When moving the addon folders to the Organized Folders within the Addon folder, were you "moving" them from the community folder into the organized folder? On screen it seemed you already had them into those organized folders, so I wasnt clear on where and how those were placed into the new folders. Thanks
yes i created organized folders then i moved all my addons from the community folder to the new folder i created to keep things organized.
Nice tool. Good simple tutorial. Does it work with navigraph? Or do you let navigraph update it's database separately in the community folder? I recently just got a navigraph subscription because the flight plans that I made in little navmap did not copy correctly to msfs. Using the navigraph data on msfs and on lnm toke care off this problem.
I believe you can update little navmap with your navigraph data I don't have that subscription so I didn't show it but I think there is instructions on the website.
@@2020fsers correct navigraph can update msfs data and the little navmap data. Littlenavmap even suggest you to do so when using navigraph data.

I followed your instruction to download this, then extracted it and put it on my desktop and created a shortcut but didn't populate it. I tried to run MSFS and it opened and shut down without running every time. I went back and deleted both the folder and the shortcut. MSFS seems to run again now. I am still stuck with no ability to install new gliders in my hanger. Putting the extracted folders into the Community folder doesn't seem to work for me. I run Windows 11. Where did I go wrong?

Unfortunately no you cannot. Even using addonlinker the addon is still placed in the community
I have often wanted to make last-minute changes to the Community folder via Add-on Linker during the startup of the sim. Do you know how late in the startup process I can still make changes to the community folder (via the Add-on Linker) and have it update the available contents of the Community folder for this run of the simulator?
I'm not sure if I forget something I just right click on the msfs and close it . Then add what I want and restart .
It was easy to figure out on my own how to add folder location. However, you only spent about ten seconds at the end of the video explaining how to use the Addon Linker to Launch MSFS 2020. Do we need to select a Preset and is only that Preset activated when MFFS launches? If I have Bamberg Germany selected in the Linker, and launch MSFS, When I select an Airport in Bamberg, Germany, are the Linker Addons enabled or do I need to do something else?
whatever preset you choose is what will be loaded when you launch msfs . only 1 preset can be loaded at once i believe , i dont use presets so im not 100%
Really well done. I just installed Addons Linker, and I ran into an issue:
I moved everything out of ‘Community’ to a temp folder, installed ‘Linker’ per instructions, created sub-folders in the ‘Linker’ folder I created. ‘Linker’ is pointed to the correct location of the ‘Community’ folder. I moved a couple of things into the ‘Linker’ folder, and they appeared in the interface. I checked a couple of them, and they turned green, but none of the links I expected to see appeared in the ‘Community’ folder.
Any idea why?
That means the community folder location is incorrect in the addon linker .
It is probably dumb question, but can I organize addons in my community folder only? I understand that many people use addon linker because they ran out of space on the disc where their MSFS is installed. So they use different drive and thanks to ADL they can have basically "community folders" everywhere in the PC. I would like to just organize my community folder (if possible). Thanks for claryfing this.
Unfortunately, you cannot organize your community folder.You have to have the main folders installed and no subfolders.

BUT if I create for example community 2 folder on the same disc and I move all the 30 addons from community folder to my community 2 folder all of a sudden I can manage my addons what I want and dont want to load? Am I able to put my add-ons on a large mechanical drive and then use add-on linker to put everything in the community folder or do I have to still use a faster SSD drive for my add-ons? I don't want to lose performance in any way if I put items on a mechanical drive
If it were me and I'm no computer wiz but I would keep them on the ssd imo it will be faster as the addon linker only uses a shortcut to link to the folder and if that folder is on a a HD slow as homing pigions it probably won't work as fast but I could be completely wrong .
What do the "Store" people do when they cant write files? What are the red dots? None of my paid for planes outside the store work anymore and they also have red dots. Fixed, my bad. Folders inside of folders messed me up, lol. Red dot seems to mean not activated. Confusing directly next to a checkbox that tells you that, lol. It is quite nice to have this control over your community folder.
Is there a number of mods you use at one time as a rule of thumb? Or rather how many is too much, lol.
Anything from the marketplace I leave it alone and I don't mess with those .
Am I missing something or did you leave out the step that moves the bulk of the add-ons out of the true community folder into the linker folder then possibly via a preset you move links to those add-ons into the true community folder depending on what you actually need the simulator to load for today's flight.
All of your addons will.be in a file you create on the desktop when you click on the box in the linker it will move a shortcut into the community folder .
Can the file structure you showed be used in the defualt Community folder (for use without this addon)?
No unfortunately you cannot . The main file folder must be placed in the community only and that is what the linker does for you
Is it possible to use addon linker with default MSFS aircrafts and scenery? lets say I have every world update downloaded and I'm going to do VFR in Australia. So I dont need other world updates. I also dont use 2/3 of default MSFS planes. Can I "not load" them using addon linker? I guess it could save few minutes of my loading time. Thanks for answer..
No I don't think you can use it like that .
How do liveries work if you were to make a livery folder? Do you need to enable the liveries each time you start up?
Yes you would check them before you start the sim

When you download the scenery for an airport or if there are 3rd party airports then take that file you would normally stick in the community folder and follow this video. Thanks for the comment .

If you use them all the time I would just put them in the community if not then yeah put them in the linker .

My C drive ssd i has less then 10% left were MSFS is..I tried to move my commumit y folder to my (E:) SSD which is 4 TB and still 3.5 TB free. I have just download add on linker and tried to move to the(E:) but does not work very well If I move a airport it ends up being default. Or is there awy to move MSFS from the (C:) to the (E:)? Could you do a video?
The only way I know is to uninstall the sim and reinstall it on your other drive .
@Ron, you shouldn't move your community folder. Leave the community folder where it was originally. Then make a folder on your E: drive (name it whatever you want ie community2 or addons etc). Then open addon linker, and following the steps in the video, point it to your self named folder on your E: drive (which should have the physical addons).
This program simply creates "shortcuts" (symbolic links) from where your files are physically store and "tricks" the sim into thinking they are all located in the original community folder location.
Is there a way to update the add-ons via the add-on linker? Because if it can we would no longer need to check for updates on the add-ons from time to time.
No unfortunately the addon linker doesn't have that capability.
Hello, my MSFS2020, from the MS Store running on PC, crashes to desktop (CTD) as soon as I start aircraft with mods of complex aircraft like PMDG. I think it's a security/access issue with the community folder. How do I fix this?

I set up everything ans started populating the addons folder until I realized that I didn't want it on my C drive - I wanted it on my D drive. So now how do I go about moving these files from that desktop folder into the correct one on D? Can I back out the addons back into my Community folder and then move them again into the new one?
Create a folder on your d drive and move all the addons there . Then tell the addon linker where that folder is .
Great video and channel. Question, I installed MSFS addon linker on a windows 10 machine and have used it for over a year with no problems. I now have a new computer with windows 11 and I am trying to install MSFS Addon Linker onto this machine. I downloaded the file and extracted etc.. However, with I click on the exe file windows tells me you need to install an app for this task. I am guessing that windows defender is not allowing me to open the file. I even tried opening as administrator. How do I get around this? It is such a great program and I need to install this on my new computer.

So i have to have two copies of addons?, one in the Test Addon folder and one in the MSFS Community Folder?
1 shortcut and 1 original . The original mods go in your folder of choosing on your desktop when you click the check box next to the mods that you want in the community folder the shortcut will appear in the community folder.
Great detailed video. However, I'm really trying to understand the purpose of having to move these folders around. I am new to all this. I thought that once I download an addon and add it to my community folder and it shows up on my msfs 2020 game, I was all set. Thanks for the comment . Addon linker is not needed especially if you are just starting out. But as you accumulate more and more scenery and aircraft and other mods like liveries and performance mods your community folder will get packed and with that also comes conflicts with other mods and sceneries. So this can help reduce what is in your community folder as well as load times and allows you you easily remove and add things to determine if a mod is causing issues. Also addon linker can be used to start other apps and programs for msfs when you start the sim from linker. Also you can start the sim in high priority mode with linker . It becomes a very useful tool as you progress in your flight sim journey.
@@2020fsers it's amazing how much time this addon linker program saves. My only issue is that the 3 airplanes I really care about flying which is the a32nx, the fenix and the salty 747, they do not load up anymore. Did I lose the airplanes all together? I haven't deleted anything but I no longer see the aircraft. I know I'm annoying the crap outta you sir, I just didn't know what else to do.
@David-gf1py the addons should still be there I'm not sure . Maybe re download them .

What happens in cases like PMDG that updates via the ops center? Does it detect that you moved that aircraft to a new folder to place the updated files? Or will it default back to your community folder?
In cases like the pmdg I do not use the addon linker for this.

Does add on linker allow you to change mod while in game. For example the pushback tool, after I complete my pushback could I theoretically turn off that specific mod and continue on with my flight
Unfortunately no all.addons must be in the community before you start the sim . I believe that's when it loads everything so if you do remove something or add it the sim will not load the new mod and nor will it be removed.

Followed all instructions, but my community folder where msfs is installed is still filling up. My custom addons folder is also filling up. I don't want my community folder to be filling up
that is how it works it inputs what addons you want into your community folder so you don't need to keep all addons in there at the same time.
Forgive me for this simple question. I am brand new to this. Once the desktop file is setup and sync to the Addon Linker, do I delete the contents of the MSFS community folder?
Noooo don't delete the addons in the community all you want to do I take all the addons and place them in the new folder you created and organize them then select the one you want for that flight in addon linker and away you go.

A dedicated ssd is best for msfs and keep all the addons and mods there as well.

So ultimately you are removing add ons from the MSFS community folder?
Yes you remove all of you addons from the community folder and organize them in another folder then use the addon linker and this will only place the addons that you want in there for that flight .
I cannot get the Batch feature to work. Also I have checked Shutdown Linker when MSFS starts and that does not work. Any ideas?
Just make sure if using the batch feature in the linker you select the main exe file for the application.
I just installed the gsx pro. I can't get i work. It doesn't create a link to the community folder. Can i just use this to link the gsx to the community folder?

Yes you move them out of the community folder and install them in the new folder you created on your desktop to organize them .

What I need to know is do I tick all add-ons to be green on the App or should it just be the ones needed for the particular flight I'm going to do when I load in? I'm asking because I've been leaving them all green and don't know if there's a disadvantage in doing so.
The purpose of Addon Linker is so that you can add the add-ons that you want for the flight if you're going to keep all of the add-ons checked and installing them in the community,then you might as well just put them all in your community folder as that's what you are doing when you check all of them.
@@2020fsers Interesting. Thanks for that. Oh and by the way, I just checked and I have a total of a hundred add-ons, would that be like on the high side? I have a robust system which can hold out but I'm curious whether the MSFS experience of others places a hundred add-ons as low, average or high.
@peterbassey9668 I've known people to have a thousand add-ons but the more add-ons that you load the longer it takes for Microsoft flight simulator to load

Got it set up but forgot to click the start sim button. It is now gone from my screen. I had added an icon to my taskbar and when I click on it, it says it is already running. Opened the Task Manager and it doesn't show it running. Now I can't get back to the program.

It should be in the task manager scroll down . But if that doesn't work restart your pc.
@@2020fsers I guess this is a bug. I have it open and also your video, so I can switch back and forth. With both open I go to your video, then when I go back AddOn Linker is not there. If I try to open it, it says "already running".
I figured it out. I clicked that little up arrow on the lower right side of the task bar and there was the icon for AddOn Linker. Everythings fine now. All set up and flying. Thanks for your video.

ok when i make new folder for addons on desktop it doesn't have the option to show desk top my addons for the folder I just created to add. I hit browse and desktop is not an option its not recognizing the folder i just created. what other options are there that i can do? it only lets me choose desktop in c users default but not my folder name my addons. and when i click ok it shows all my addons that are in the community folder. yippy lol

@@2020fsers I figured it out I guest with this latest version of addons manager you have to create new folder in side of C;\ and then create the folder my addons. its now showing it in that folder. but now I can just move it to the desktop to get to it faster

Yes and no it's empty if you don't check any of the boxes next to the mods in the linker but when you click them it will put a shortcut in the community folder for the mod.

Would Addon linker have any impact on frame rate? Out of nowhere my FPS during flight has gone from 60 - 70 d0wn to 30 - 40.
no addon linker has no effect on fps actually you can close it after the sim starts i have mine auto close
Does it take out add-on after done with flight?
You have to un tick the mod in addon linker .

No this does not . This is a separate app to msfs and closes once msfs opens . But it can help you figure out what is causing ctds by unselecting mods to remove them systematically eliminate 1 at a time until you find you problem

Your welcome .you should also run the iscl cleaner to help with ram memory.
Whats really the point of moving things in and out of your community folder. Why not just leave everything in there? Different scenery for the same area. different mods for a plane you plan to use?
The reason is some people like to fly all over the world and have hundreds of scenery addons and others .this causes issues with mod conflicts long loading times and possible other issues . If you only use a couple addons in the community then this may not be the application for you but if you suffer from the load times, purple textures on aircraft or lag issues, poor alignment on runways and scenery , bad taxiway or runway markers, inop jetways . then this may be something to try . I hope that helps.
