Great one! I hadn't put it together, but Sally reemerges in Lou's solo work dying of an amphetamine overdose on the floor (yet again!) in "Sally Can't Dance."
Pretty much all of the recorded versions of this song are well worth a listen.
Here’s a left curve suggestion: in 1987 I had stumbled across a soundtrack to a Belgian experimental short film called Fuck Your Dreams, This Is Heaven. The soundtrack is an assembly of dark synth bands like Tuxedomoon and Minimal Compact doing extremely moody covers of 1960s and 70s songs by the Velvets, Patti Smith, and Syd Barrett. The standout track is Peter Principle and Bruce Geduldig covering VU’s Ocean. They transmogrify it with pulsing synths and strings and percussion. An unheard gem.

Lou was his very best when John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Angus MacLise were behind him.

Great song really moves. The way the Sex Pistols inspired bands like my favorite Joy Division in UK, so too The Velvet Underground did just that here. In early gigs people would go and say I can do that too watching Lou and Co. Such an important band even without all the mystique.
Got some Sister Ray vibes too, which was covered by,oh, I don't know was it perhaps Joy Division?

If you ever plan to motor west...there's a whole heap of Chuck Berry in there. I've always thought barbiturates (downers) not speed (uppers) in this song. It's also well known that you're gonna need an ocean of calamine lotion.
Stephanie Says may be my fave off VU, and Black Angel's Death Song is the Up There song for me. I listened to _Metal Machine Music_ on YT a couple of years ago, and mischievously commented "Derivative".
Please don't laugh at me for admiring Moe's drumming. She doesn't do much on this track, but listen to her subtle contributions to I'm Set Free and Heroin. Shame about her politics, though.
cf. "With her fog, her amphetamines, and her pearls". The extensive DEA slang guide says pearl is coke, but doesn't mention fog.
I'm amazed anyone (mentioning no names, Andrew) can get through life without digesting the VU album thoroughly. I reckon it's the best Velvet Underground disc out there - but that's just my humble opinion.
I always used to name the Velvet's as one of my fav' bands, that was until the day I watched a documentary about sampling in which Lou Reed appeared whinging about the new music and the use of samples, basically saying if you use samples you need to pay $. Ironic given the stealing of lyrics that you mentioned in this song. Just what the world needs Mr Reed, more lawyers. I can no longer consider him rock 'n roll (the music is good though).
It seems a bit ironic that an English man has to introduce an American to one of the most iconic American bands ever. One of VU’s best by the way.

May I request that you introduce Andrew to The Pop Group? One of the great British bands who could play pop music with a avant garde sound. The obvious one is She is Beyond Good and Evil, and you could give a nod to Neitzsche too 😁
Hey Terry, to be fair there's plenty of other Americans that don't have a clue about VU.
And funnily enough there's an episode coming up where Andy does introduce me to Pere Ubu.

@@theaudiophiles7889 Yeah, I suppose I am making assumptions that all Americans know all American Iconic bands and all British know British Iconic bands. There are lots of bands that are well known both sides of the pond but are not known to everyone due to lack of exposure. Love what you guys do, you have both introduced me to bands I know little or nothing about, and unlike any of the other reaction channels, you never know what you are going next. Thanks for doing what you do, you are by far the best reaction channel.
