    I get the Rare Breed but I've not tried the Russell's stuff yet... I love Wild Turkey but am not a huge fan of Beam stuff. Get this, I've been finding Rare Breed for $39 and that is Canadian which is about $29.47 US I keep buying it, I've even tried mixing it with 101 at 50/50% and almost liked it better... almost... it was easier to drink and sweeter with less alcohol punch... only problem is for whatever reason 101 is averaging $45, cheapest I've found is $39 soo... you can see why I am stocking up on Rare Breed... it's so good, I can't see paying ton's more when this is available at a reasonable price... that said I don't want to use it as a mixer so that says something, most other sub $50 bourbons I find I don't mind using mixed with Ginger ale...I missed out on trying Russell's 10 when it was on sale for $39 but gotta try that one too...

      Hard to pass up Russell’s picks for us, but through so many blinds we’ve realized they’re just different from Rare Breed but maybe (read: often times) not better for our palates.

  • @nandayane

    I remember going to a whiskey bar and really liking Russells. It’s always been expensive and hard to find in our market, I had some woodford reserve and some rare breed non chill filtered rye recently that re-ignited my love for American whiskey.
    Thanks for the blind tastings, they really stand out as a review style for alcohol which relies a lot on bias and hype. I think that I have a few on the list now checking our your reviews.

    So satisfying watching a double blind of a family of bourbons that y’all obviously love. That confused moment on the 2nd nose was amazing! Joined y’all in this one, also with a pick, and, while not blind, similar results.Ironic Erin on this reveal may trump classic shocked Josh. After the ADHD crossover, the logical next step is Rare Bird 101….but what I want to see is a ladies night crossover with It’s Bourbon Night’s Sarah and Bourbon Van’s Julie.

    Wow, fantastic head to head! Enjoyed your rating and the dialog. I have 2 Russell's Store Picks (from 2 different stores) from warehouse G, 4th floor and "to me" they both crush the Rare Breed. You are seriously making me reconsider my blind tasting! I think it would have been interesting if you used a normal Russell's Reserve (unless your Rare Breed was a Store Pick). As for value, I can get Rare Breed for $44, Russell store pick for $64 - yah, Rare Breed gets the nod there definitely.

The 4RSB was a 50ml sample and the larceny was a 750 I got for my bday, and while both were good, to my surprise the 4RSB won the blind. Currently sipping rare breed, a bday gift from my fiance. You guys among others, steered me toward rare breed, and though it's maybe a tad hot for me, but I'm still new to neat spirits, but it's so so good. Agree so much but 🤫.. Rare Breed is my all things considered #1 bourbon. It’s so good and a great yardstick bourbon. I am a huge wild turkey fan and I think, overall, the Russell’s picks from 2019 and earlier were better than the recent picks.
    RR13 is on a whole other level though - compared to both rare breed and most picks. Absolute steal at retail and my number 1 bourbon I’ve had in 2021 (not close as of now)

      Love the Turkey enthusiasm, Jeff! We're obviously big fans too. Oddly enough, during our charity livestream around the 1h 30m mark (give or take a few), we were tasting from a blind pool and just so happened to pull Rare Breed blind immediately followed by Russell's 13 blind, and comments were made before revealing what we were drinking that we enjoyed both a great deal but preferred the fruitiness on what ended up being Rare Breed. I think it's just one of those bottles that fits our palates like a glove. Luckily we had a little bit of the Russell's 13 sample left and were able to enjoy it a few days later, and what a fantastic pour it is! Cheers and thanks so much for watching!

    I wonder if the slightly higher proof of Rare Breed is the difference maker?

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  Před 2 lety

      That's a great question. When it's double blind and we don't know there's a proof difference, we often can't detect a proof gap of 5-6 points, but there's also plenty of times that we can (or even if it doesn't come through as a proof difference, it can come through as more flavor). In this particular head-to-head, the separating factor was the balance and fruity elements of the Rare Breed to balance out the oak. The Russell's was more oak forward and spiky in comparison. After thinking about it, it makes sense as Rare Breed is a batched product that should theoretically be more well rounded. Both great pours though.
