    X-Men: Evolution is an American animated television series about the Marvel Comics superhero team X-Men.[1] In this incarnation, many of the characters are teenagers rather than adults. The series ran for a total of four seasons (52 episodes) from November 4, 2000 until October 25, 2003 on Kids' WB, which has made it the third longest-running Marvel Comics animated series, behind only Fox Kids' X-Men and Spider-Man animated series. The series began running on Disney XD on June 15, 2009.
    Produced in the United States, the voice recording was done in Canada and the show was animated in Japan and South Korea

    I have a huge soft spot for Evolution. Although it was a little silly for the Mutants to be attending high school instead of just attending the Xavier Institute it still worked. Especially when the lid was blown on the character's mutant identities. While it did many new things to cater to younger audiences it made sure to utilize older lore. Like Nightcrawler's image inducer. I don't think any prior X-Men shows did that. Also I marked out when they put Wolverine in his Ultimate costume. If I'm not mistaken it was like the first Marvel cartoon to start using elements from the 1610 comics along with Morrison's New X-Men lore. I can go on and on but I love this series. It doesn't get enough credit.

      I love that they attended a regular school cuz it was like seeing how well they can hide that they was mutants. How well they can do things normally without using powers. Also it a way for them to get used to being around normal people. If they just attend their school, then they would get careless cuz everyone a mutant in the school. They probably will forget about the normal people or not care that much about them cuz they haven’t connected to them.

    • @lucariomew365
      @lucariomew365 Před 4 lety +90

      @Jakazu No. It really wasn't. X-Men Evolution had the advantage of building up the mystery of Apocalypse through several episodes thanks to his acolyte Mesmiro. The episodic format also allowed the writers to build upon the motivations and personalities of the characters, which ultimately had a huge impact on the coming of Apocalypse. This culminated in his eventual revival in the season 3 finale, wherein he truly had the presence of the powerful ancient mutant that he was always built up as, but lacked in most mediums - seriously, he usually comes across as more of a physically imposing cyborg or mechanically advanced alien than a mutant. Truly, It was the first and only time that I've believed Apocalypse to be powerful before any of his celestial enhancements.
      As for X-Men Apocalypse, the film is ultimately bogged down by a lot of unnecessary baggage from the rest of the Fox X-Men franchise. Normally I try to ignore that sort of thing to focus on the story arc itself, but I just couldn't. Most of the character motivations were either weak or completely nonsensical. Then you have other factors like J-Law's Mystique drama (both on screen and behind the scenes) and the massive continuity error of Angel existing decades before he was supposed to have been born, and the fact that he was now British instead of American. But worst of all Apocalypse is just as inconsistent.
      The DoF end-credits scene built up a lot of expectations for me. Seeing the young En Sabah Nur casually build the pyramids, while being worshiped by seemingly millions was breath taking. His introductory scene as an adult in X-Men Apocalypse was also epic, as was his reawakening. I even liked how they basically gave him aspects of the Shadow King via his relationship with Storm. But then it went down hill. We see Apocalypse use mind control ONCE (when he piggybacks off Charles' psychic link to force the military to launch all the nukes) but otherwise it's suggested that he convinced the 4 Horsemen to follow him to end the world after a brief conversation. It would have made more sense if he had used some mind control to compel his horsemen. Because from what we see, he doesn't even make a very good case for his philosophy. For the rest of the movie he ceased using any and all of his impressive powers, aside from power argumentation, in favor of cheesy monologuing. Honestly, Apocalypse felt more like a plot device to reset the status quo and reestablish teen versions of the previous characters from the OG timeline. I also never understood how this version of the character acquired his tech/armor.

    • @KcKc13
      @KcKc13 Před 4 lety +3

      I agree-I think it’s mainly because the movies are pretty bad and because the comics have existed for so long that the writers probably feel like they’ve run out of material and just make stuff more and more weird and dramatic. The romances are too entangled and some of the plots have just been so weird, even for people with super powers. Also not to mention comics are often created mainly with a male audience in mind or even the artists and writers in mind, which sometimes leads to weak yet over sexualized female characters. I always thought I loved the x-men too, but it’s really just the x-men in a more kid-friendly bubble that I’ve loved (and I say this as an adult lol). I’ve been really excited about Mr and Mrs X though, I haven’t had the chance to read whole issues but I’ve read quite a few panels and it looks good!
      *Edit:* I'm not talking about powers but about characterization. I love so many female X-men members--Rogue and Storm are some of my favorite super heroes, period. But there are issues with how super powered women are portrayed at times so please read my comment below and research before trying to argue. Thanks! :)

    • @KcKc13
      @KcKc13 Před 4 lety +3

      @Jake I'm saying that Marvel and really super hero creators in general often have a problem portraying women not as weak heroes but as weak /characters./ Sometimes I feel like they lose out on character development in some comic lines and seem to just be there as sex appeal. This can be due to the way they're written or how they're drawn. Sometimes they're a really cool character that's well-loved but is STILL tinged in unnecessary constant sexualization (cough Rogue and Wonder Woman cough). This isn't ALWAYS true of course, and lots of times it only happens within specific comic lines and not in their story as a whole, but it happens enough within Marvel in general that I've noticed it ever since I was a kid.
      Comics aren't just about the fights and the powers anymore, it's about the reader connecting with the person behind the mask too. The demographics of super hero fans have changed dramatically as well; now tons of girls are interested as well, though really a number of us always have been.
      An example of what I'm saying: look at how many weird angles female characters are always drawn in. Their bottom or chest is always visible and they're twisting in unrealistic poses, even in fights. Almost every female super hero I've seen has unrealistic proportions and are way too curvy for their weight. Not every woman is an hourglass (And yes many of the Marvel men are unrealistically muscular but it's not at all the same). Please look up articles about this if you'd like more proof of sexualization in comics. I recommend the article "The Objectification of Women in Comic Books" from Fantasy Magazine.
      Also, look at Jean for example in many different storylines, including this show--a lot of times her personality is incredibly bland and only gets interesting because of her powers or Phoenix. Even in X-men: The Last Stand, where she becomes Phoenix and is so out of control they have to take her down, the most notable parts about her is that she [spoiler] killed the Professor and her husband and gets with Wolverine. Bland.
      You're right that those characters are some of the most powerful mutants, and hands down they're some of the coolest Marvel characters in general. Can't believe I forgot to give them credit since I love most of them. Kinda wish you'd responded more nicely though. :/

      @jonbrewer297 Před 4 lety +1

      @@KcKc13 There's also the "rape as something that happens to women" trope. What I mean is, in comics, rape is just done to start drama, and it's the only thing they can think of for women.

I also like how it would add characters to the team as the show went on, which is something I felt the 90s cartoon lacked. I also enjoyed the character designs as they were a much more grounded take on the classic costumes. For me personally, the wolverine design is one of top three favorites behind the giant sized x men and the x force designs.

To men in the 90s series the costumes felt like expressions of each mutans individuality, which to me was to some extent what x-men was about. When evolution came out and the costumes looked so bland like the movies it felt like a betrayal of the source material. also i may have had a crush on the fuzzie dude, what i will say this the civilian clothing was great, I totally agrea i would love more good versions of emma frost. i thought she was awsome in wolverine and the x-men and fell in love with the her in the i wish she was my teacher way in the X-Men ANIME

    I loved that with Evolution, the Brotherhood are the 'bad' kids, but they're never actually evil. They're angry, poor, have had rough lives, and the show doesn't skirt around that. They're still sympathetic in their own ways, and each member of the Brotherhood gets moments that humanize them. And in the epilogue, it shows they actually joined SHIELD, and are their own kind of heroes now. It was a very nuanced take on how kids set up with no or bad guardians will be on the wrong track, even if the kids are good at heart.

    Not only was X-Men Evolution one of the most foundational shows of my childhood, but this Rogue X-Men Evo is the best cosplay I've ever worked on making.

    X-Men: Evolution was my second ever experience with superheroes [After Powerpuff Girls], and it helped shape nearly every aspect of my life. My writing is heavily influenced by it, and I even spent a few years working on a continuation for it that was intensive enough that I only needed a script and animation skills to turn it into something viewable. It's one of those things that I have difficulty listening to even valid criticism for it.

    X-Men Evolution was one of the greatest shows of my childhood. All of the teen superhero shows were phenomenal to me (this, Iron Man Armored Adventures, Spectacular Spider-Man, etc.)

    I grew up with X-Men Evolution as my only knowledge of the X-Men until parents decided I was "old enough" to watch the movies, and I gotta say, I'm glad it was Evolution that I grew up with. The animation style and storytelling were so good and the reason I fell in love with the X-Men, and to this day they still have many of my favorite depictions of characters and story arcs from the comics.

    I've certainly have seen all the XMen originated cartoons and shows. Although X Men Evolution was the one that I would watch as it was developed, still love 90s X Men more as reruns. The 90s one was so iconic and made me get the opening as a ringtone in middle school when many of the people my age didnt even know what it was. I love both these mediums for different reasons, although I cant stress enough of how I hate the adaptations of X Men in almost all the live actions. Choices in actors being one problem while also having such tonal whiplash is so unsettling. Even the act of portraying the Phoenix Force was horried as not Jean seemed like just a pawn without her own agency.

    I remember this version of magneto being intimidating and badass. He was my favourite character when I was younger, also I recently rewatched the 90s x men animated series and I thought it mostly holds up.
    Also: does anyone remember/like the x men anime I actually really like that show.

    I watched all of X-men evolution and I missed it so much. Only complaint is that I wish they made more episodes about the side X-men like, sunspot, beserker, wolfsbane, cannonball, magma, Bobby, etc
