    This is the nicest block of wood with holes drilled in it that I think I have seen.

    I learned something today. I learned that if I need to work up to a small narrow end grain feature that I should leave a lot of extra wood on the ends and cut it away later after all the shocks and router plane work are done. Yep, not chastising you. Thankful actually. I would have done the same as you did. But thanks to you for taking one for the Team I might just have learned something today. And what a great idea for the plane block! I too have ended up with dowels off my LV plate that looked like Ol' McGee's walking stick. I can see where the block would help a lot with avoiding that.

    I think a lot of the skill of woodworking is getting good at fixing mistakes. Since James is happy with what he has, it's perfect. Another option would be to cut and fit a little triangle piece with matching grain glued in the spot. A lot of my mistakes become design features or inlays too. If you get creative it's no longer a repair. You're elaborating.

    Hey, James, just a thought, if you want to make another, leave the block long, cut the recess/es, set the doweling block, then cut the wood block to length.
    Also, could you use a sacrificial fence on the shooting board and a #7 or #8 to shoot the ends of the block?

    @tessarnold7597 Před 3 lety +1

    To avoid the blowout, you could use a chisel to get to final depth for 1/8 - 1/4 of an inch from each side, then use the router plane between. Since the plate will cover the finished cut, all you need to do is maintain a sharp wall.

    It occurs to me that for people following along, it would be much easier to leave the piece long while carving the inset and then saw it off afterward to get the same look. All in all, great build! I want one of these now, especially as I'm slipping into an area of woodworking where I'm going to need a lot of pegs. Right now the only way I can make pegs is by hand, using an axe and knife for basic shape and then sanding to exact dimensions. Takes a long time and the results are neither pretty nor reliable. Thinking I'll make mine out of Siberian Elm, seeing as it's the easiest hardwood to get hold of in that size, and I know it'll take a beating (made my first mallet out of it and it can drive nails with minimal deformation).

    just made one of these a couple days ago. im going to redo it however. it needs to be deeper than i made it i think. i think i will make it a bit taller due to legs on the sides. that way i think i might be able to grab the dowels out of the bottom. maybe.
    great video. hope your vacations was/is going well.

      I made one last year stacking 3 4x2 and then sawed out waste to leave 4 chunky 'legs'. It lets you knock the dowels through, if short, and see to line up with a dog hole if longer.

    You are the third creator I watch that has posted a video with mistakes in it in the last 2 days. I guess it’s mistake week on CZcams, and in my shop, good thing is your mistake totally fine mine on the other hand, not fine. Have a huge gap in the middle of an end grain trivet that I’m not happy with, I know I can just fill it with epoxy and nobody will notice because it’s for personal use but I will know it’s there and it’s going to- for me anyway- take away from the look I was going for. But alas it is a learning experience double triple check before I glue next time.

    @Wood By Wright How 2 : How do chamfer the edges (with the metal plate installed) and avoid nicking the plane blade into the metal plate? Just know when to stop?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  Před 3 lety +1

      Yep. You just don't hit the steel. I chamfer the edge about a 16th inch away from the steel.

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo

      It's only need once every few years if that. But all you do is put it face down on your sharpening stone and rub it around.

    I don't think I'd have even tried working with those narrow edges, and would have just wrapped a center block with panels with mitered corners The music was annoying. It's why I don't watch any of the videos on the other channel.
