Sewing TWO Costumes Inspired by "Over The Garden Wall" (with a vintage twist)

  • It is FINALLY TIME that I make some costumes from my most-favorite, sUPeR WHOLESOME, masterpiece that is "Over the Garden Wall".
For this project, I used the designs of an artist I found on Ye Olde Instagram to give Greg & Wirt's outfits a little 'vintage twist'. Even though 'Sewing Mercury' is totally also in retrograde, and I swore at my sewing machine more times than I can count, I'm glad I finally did it, hahahaha.
I hope you guys enjoy and get some cozy, autumn-time feels.

One of the things I adore about Rachel is that, while she still keeps up with the ~aesthetic~ she is also so real: we see her wearing pants and slippers under the skirts, we see the mess sewing leaves behind in the living room, kittens and doggos doing whatever they please, etc.
Idk man, it just brings me SO much joy to see someone so candid. She is such a breath of fresh air 💙

Some unsolicited quick and dirty cone pattern advice: tie a pencil to a piece of string the height you want the cone to stand (add any seam allowances), then pin the other end of the string in place (tip of the cone) against an edge of your paper, then using the pencil on a string like a giant compass (you know, the thing that holds the pencil on one side and has a spike of doom on the other from your elementary school geometry set) and draw the curve, then get the sewing tape and measure out the circumference you want the finished cone to be (presumably your head measurement) plus seam allowances, along the curved line, then draw a straight line from there back to where your pin is stuck in. We use this trick in the armour shop all the time because nobody ever makes a compass big enough for making circles for stuff like viking round shields!

It's a lot of fun, actually. Banging on metal is quite therapeutic. We do both battle armour and fantasy armour. The advantages of metal over fabric include that it can hold its own shape and that you can make 3D shapes from a flat piece, metal does stretch if you bang it enough :) However, untreated fabric edges generally can't cut you, and I only need hearing protection while sewing if I'm having a particularly screamy day :D

I've got a handstand story for your Rachel. When I was seven, I was playing in my back yard. I had been doing handstands and trying--with very limited success--to walk on my hands. Just as my neighbor went out her back door to walk to her car with her baby in her arms, I fell over onto my back in a similar way that you described at 18:14. Although I landed safely on the soft grass, I somehow managed to break one finger and badly sprain another before I came crashing down. I screamed so loudly that my neighbor almost dropped her baby. And then both I and the baby started crying. The entire scene was quite dramatic, as you may imagine.

How to make a cone for future hat endeavors:
    1. Draw a circle on the material with radius equal to the length you want the side of the hat to be from tip to base (this will be a bit more than the desired height, because right triangles and stuff)
    2. Using a flexible measuring tape (vs. a stiff ruler) measure out the desired circumference of the base against the circumference of the circle, and mark the two endpoints.
    3. Draw straight lines from the center to each of the two marked points to form something that looks like a pie slice in your circle. At this point we can check to see if we're on the right track towards getting the shape we want. If you're aiming for a tall, skinny cone, this will probably be a fairly large slice. If you've been trying to make a wide, flat one, the slice should conversely be small.
    4. Cut out the circle and cut out the marked "pie slice." The remainder of the pie turns into the cone.
    5. Line up and attach the two straight edges left behind from the slice.
This gives a cone with a perfectly pointed top and a nice level base!

Have to ask- are you pressing everything after each step? Like, sew seam, press it open, then press it however you want it for finishing the seam. Sew the seam finished. Press again.
I know it’s a lot of pressing, but really- pressing is 50% of sewing. 50% of good sewing, anyway. And I get being lazy and being like “do I really have to? Can’t I just skip this?” But yes, you do really have to, and no, you can’t skip pressing.
I also because it looks like a lot of my early sewing work, before I learned how dang important pressing actually is. Also- tip: when cutting notches into fabric, it’s best to cut the triangles to the outside. It really helps if you’ve got a very fraying type of fabric. Or, you could mark them with pen, or even thread notch them. Evelyn Wood has a great recent video about notches, how to do them, and what they’re for. And a whole bunch of other important sewing tips that definitely don’t come on the pattern instructions.

If the finished garment can be washed, (spray)starch helps a lot. Especially with natural fibers, but to some degree even with synthetics.
I either add a generous amount of starch, when I prewash the fabric and then dry it laying flat or spraystarch all around the edges and possibly, where the darts and other details go. It makes the fabric nice and stiff and manageable and to some degree prevents fraying and stretching as well, since the starch has a glue like effect, if you use enough of it.
Pro tip: get the most heavy duty starch, you can find, since most formulations are meant, to only give a light hold.
P.S. in a pinch, cheap hairspray works as well ;-)
