A roll of pink survey ribbon. I use it in the back country hikes. To mark my waypoints
Yessir that’s a good idea!
Many years ago I learned the value of a map and compass while hiking in the northern woods of MN. Being disoriented in the woods is a sickening feeling.
LOL! Great opener! I really liked this because you broke things down to the nuts & bolts. Thanks for sharing!

👍👍👍 .. excellent advice .. and easy to remember and apply.
To add .. when shooting an azimuth to a bisecting feature (river / trail / road) that has a specific destination point on it (hut, small settlement, road intersectiion etc), deliberately 'aim' to one side .. whichever is convenient. On reaching the bisecting feature, one then knows in which direction to turn in order to pick up the destination point.
Lastly, something I read back in the 70's. The Author stated that, "One is never really lost. You exactly where you are (standing) .. perhaps just not where you would like to be." 😁.
I always have a compass and fluorescent orange tape in the woods, thanks again brother very good job God bless
When I was 18 I got turned around and walked for 2&1/2 hrs but I remembered following the stream down & it led me to a street ( was never so happy) oh yes I definitely panicked, the hardest thing to do is just stay calm.
The good thing about the moss method is since moss grows on the N, S, E, and W of trees, it can get you going no matter what direction you need to go.
You’re not wrong😂 appreciate ya watching!
I always carry a map and compass and the main thing is I’ve learned how to use them. Like I learned in Boy Scouts yrs ago. Always be prepared.Great info Jake
Thanks for watching!
Great job explaining...definitely carry a Compass..phones go dead
The guy from Corporals corner just done a video on reading a compass and navigation. Dave Canterbury has several good videos on compass and maps as well.
Nice tips and safety advice! Just don’t underestimate natural navigation. People have used this for thousands of years before we invented the compass, BTW, compasses can also break 😀.
I didn’t meant garbage as in it doesn’t work, just using it as a figure of speech. Just saying we ain’t going over that in the video lol. Thanks for watching
Sound advice Jake
That silva mini is real handy! I keep one in a chest pack when i kayak and hike. Just in case i get a little disoriented i can get back on track easily without any bulk.
It’s one of my favs
Some years back now I was hunting an area I was very familiar with but stayed out deep in the backwoods until dusk and to my surprise I was questioning where I was exactly and how to get back even though I had walked it I don't know how many times before, usually during the day. Soon as I knew that I was unsure of my exact we're abouts I remembered that my watch had a little button compass on it and I knew my major land features and what direction they lay. That was all I needed to find myself at the top of the hill, found a tree stand that I could use as a way point and I was good to go.
Not a problem here in the U.K. 😂! I read somewhere that you are never more than 8-10miles(?) from a road!! However, on a serious note when I’m out and about in the “countryside” I usually always carry a paper map and a compass. Gt. video as always Jake, big thumbs up from deepest Dorset across the pond👍
Great video, Jake! Nice intro 🤣
Answering your question at the end of the video, I have definitely been lost before, lol. Fortunately, I had a laminated paper print out of the topo map for the area and I had some land nav skills to fall back on, so I made it back to the trail and my truck.
These days, I don't go on a long trip without my route plotted out on Gaia GPS on my phone. If it's in the winter, I will use CalTopo to look for avalanche danger (I live in the Rockies) and I always have an inReach on me if shit hits the fan. I broke my ankle snowboarding this past January, so it's really nice to have the inReach for last resort comms.
We go out in a place called the Selway here in Idaho. Ive been walking atop an mountain ridgelinemof timber and seen very old blaze marks on trees probably out there with an axe. Seen similar in british columbia. Anymore in these roadless areas so much has burned and theres lots of blowdown and regeneration. That kind of cross country bushwacking would wear a person doen quickly.
Good to see another video man! keep em coming! my wife laughed over the your moss on the Northside comment. It was pretty funny she never pays attention to the videos the boys and I watch but that grabbed her attention. It was funny. Love that piece of gear !
Good stuff for sure…I’ve came close a few times deer hunting in the Daniel Boone forest.
Good stuff, man. Also, I learned something new (the wagon wheel method). I love it when I learn something new ! Thanks.
I’m glad I could help out! Thanks for watching!
I have never heard this way of thinking. Great idea.
Glad it was helpful!
I did get turned around years ago but I did have knowledge of the area. Ended up walking more miles than I should have. That knowledge back then would have saved me a lot of foot wear..
Always file a flightplan with someone offsite too, even if its an area you know just telling someone "hey im hiking X woods off of road X and i should be back by 6" sets you up in case something weird or stupid or just act or god happens and youre stuck out there and need someone to come get you/you cant self rescue do to an injury.
Thanks for Sharing
THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First like and comment 🤘
My man!👊🏻
Great tips Jake!
👌
90% of people can’t read a map. Just watch them try to find space Mountian at Disney.
This is true
@@buckeyebushcraft I wish ever kid in JR high or highschool had to take map reading.
WHOO I'm a survivalist, I found it with no map.
I've never been lost but I was confused once for 3 days.
Even if im lost in the woods, as long as i have bug spray ill be fine. No bug spray, my wife can kis my a$$ goodbye 😂😂😂
Same here, except no wife💀
That all may work in developed area's with roads and such but in the high Sierra's most will just perish we get lost and never found hikers all the time
I’m talking mainly for the eastern part of the US. That’s massive country out there, definitely requires a different strategy.
Solar nav is not garbage. it's just not ideal.
Just a figure of speech. Translates to “we aren’t talking about that subject” lol
@@buckeyebushcraft Roger that. It was a long day for me. I should have picked up on that.🤙
If I don't have my compass in or near my hand here in the jungles of Florida, then I'm just asking to get lost. Walk 10 feet and turn around and nothing looks the same.
That kind of stuff is really easy to get turned around in!
Are you saying "paw method" or "paul method"? Please, I would like to look that up.
PAUL (path, angle, union, line) Method. Developed by Mors Kochanski wouldn’t call it advanced but either way a viable method none the less.
