  • You guys have been asking me on here and on Facebook how I sharpen my personal kukris, so here it is. I use a both the traditional and a modern Rada Edge method to keep my blades sharp. So far it has been very effective, but I am always eager to learn of a new way.

    My khukuri has a convex grind, as I believe most if not all khukuris have, eventually, using that pull through sharper is going to destroy the convex grind and change it to a straight bevel, not to mention how aggressive most of that type are. If you have to use that sort of sharpening device, I would suggest using one that utilises ceramic rods, most have coarse and fine slots.🤔😀

    I invested in a custom Kukri and all I can say about it is wow...super useful out camping for both wood chopping and general cutting tasks. Thank you for taking the time to teach me how to care for it, I was very curious how to use the chakmak.

    Nepal somehow found out a way to combine a hatchet and a knife into one and they are absolutely beautiful. A full kit usually comes with a sharpening knife, a skinning knife and a sheath that holds all three securely. The perfect set for all of your bushcrafting needs. It prob wont compete with a good hatchet or axe in areas with especially hard wood but it would prob get the job done. The spines on Kukris are robust and the curvature of the blade increases biting potential. Can't wait to get my set!

    seems you forget to draw a khukuri properly every now and then...

  • @SeemsLogical
    @SeemsLogical Před 6 lety +27

    Please be careful when unsheathing your khukuri. The way you pulled it out in the opening is a good way to slice open a finger. Try to place your palm along the back of the scabbard and ride the spine of the khukuri along the spine of the scabbard when unsheathing. This way is the safest way to go about inserting and removing a khukuri from its sheath.

    I understood that the distal part of the blade should be sharpened very fine for cutting, but the concave part at a less acute angle so it can be used for chopping. Then the close in portion very sharp again. That’s how I’ve done mine, anyway. Anyone know the tradition?

    I have a Gorkha Army Knife with the numbers 3025 on it. It also has a symbol on the end of the handle. Two knife crossed with something on top. What do the numbers mean and how can I tell if it is new or old?

    • @MadrasArsenal
      @MadrasArsenal  Před 6 lety +1

      Laurie Roberts The numbers are most likely a serail number. The crossed knives with emblem on top is the crest of the Royal Gurkha Rifles. Without seeing pictures of it, it is difficult to estimate the age.

      #Laurie Roberts : Old steel has a patina that can't be replicated. Never sharpen any knife like this unless you are in the field or you have cheap knives. Old steel usually has better iron (higher carbon content) and deserve to be dressed on fine sharpening stones. They will retain their edge and can be shave ready.

      Madras Arsenal Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a euphoric experience characterized by a static-like or tingling sensation on the skin. Long story short various sounds like clicking, soft talking or paper crinkleing stimulate your lizard brain for some dumb reason. Kinda got that feeling listening to your calm to the point voice and the steady ring of sharpening the kukri

  • @jaysencu937

    Sorry, I don’t know how this works. Please enlighten me. You mean to say the chakmak’s steel is harder than your khukri blade? I’ve been sharpening blades since I was 10. My grandpa always ask me to sharpen his carpentry tools and I’ve never seen any steel harder than the tool steel except for a Nichols file... I own a few khukri coldsteel and traditional WWII Gurkhas .

    • @johnprice5784
      @johnprice5784 Před 5 lety +2

      A knife blade is usually hardened and then tempered which makes the steel less brittle and able to keep an edge to it, from what I can gather the chakmak is only hardened and not tempered so it is in fact still harder than the blade .

      @Wildwestwrangler Před 3 lety

      @@johnprice5784 trust me after having to grind my chak mak to clean it up so I'd have good smooth surface for honing I can in fact say that it's harder than the blade of the kukri

    • @breifne555
      @breifne555 Před 6 lety

      Yep, ell said. In actual fact anyone who has a khukuri should make a leather sheath put together with rivets and stitching and a closure to hold the blade in. There's plenty of deigns if you google the images. The traditional sheath is OK for the wall and showing people but quite dangerous in many ways in the field for those not accustomed to it. If you're going to have an accident with a Khukuri it's always going to be a bad one. Stay paranoid and stay in one piece.

    • @DG__3
      @DG__3 Před 5 lety +2

      Traditional kukri sheaths are not the most robust thinks in the worls. The way its constructed, on the edge side of the sheath the two pieces are simply sandwiched together by the thin buffalo hide outer layer. The edge can (and has by many accounts) slice through that area when the blade is drawn. And, the way he did it... Into your fingers. which is why you should never grip the sheath like that, but rather pinch the back side of it in a clamshell grip when drawing the blade to keep your fingers clear of the path of the edge through the sheath.
