Let's be real. This thing died choking on its own blood. Maybe that's considered relatively humane. But I feel using words like "painless" are doing a disservice to what happened to this creature. This wasn't painless. This was an agonized bear gasping for air until it slipped from existence. Just own it, don't downplay the damage.
edit: To clarify, as people keep posting... I'm not condemning hunters. I'm not even condemning this hunter, this hunting style, or this particular blowdart kill. My point of contention rests on the dishonest language used to describe what happened here. He described it as "painless". He's downplaying the suffering of an animal that has an identical nervous system to us. I just want him to own the reality of the situation.
I'm not qualified to talk about what constituties an ethical or unethical kill. I just want us to use honest language. Nothing more, nothing less.

I have built, shot, and hunted with blowguns for fifty years. I do not hunt big game, either with a blowgun or any other weapon. Mostly I target shoot and take the occasional rabbit or squirrel for the pot. I also built and designed a blowgun to shoot and retrieve bullfrogs. (My favorite game. Yum!) But I can say without fear of contradiction that a well-designed blowgun and dart will kill anything a .22 short round will kill, in about the same amount of time and circumstances. As a word of caution, I had a cousin who accidentally shot and killed himself with a .22 short. That said, I don't like any of the commercial guns or darts. They all have some pretty grave limitations. My Cherokee ancestors would have chuckled at them. Please, NEVER SHOOT ANYTHING LIVING WITH ONE OF THOSE SMALL BORE WIRE DART 'HAT-PIN' GUNS. They are for target shooting only.

Steve, you have some points I agree with, like human population but I'm sure we'd disagree with the solution. As far as hunting you are misinformed. The only reason there are any large animals left in North America is because of hunters and our conservation efforts, look up the facts on that. I recently bought a house and moved to the smoky mountains and all the people in my community seem to be in a bear hunting club, lots of bear hunters, seems like there shouldn't be any bears right? I have an automatic deer feeder in my back yard and in the five months since we've lived here, we've had 11 different black bears in the yard. I don't mean we've seen a bear 11 times, there have bean 11 separate bears at my feeder, (my daughters have names for them all). Clearly the state game biologists that come up with bag limits know what they're doing, if it weren't for hunters and the money we spend on licenses there wouldn't be any bears, there weren't may black bears left 100 years ago, hunters and our money have brought them back. Most anti hunters have the opinion that we're all blood thirsty poachers, that is the opposite of reality, if we killed indiscriminately we would soon run out of game and couldn't be hunters any more.

      @colavfreak2 Před 6 lety +4

@Steve Matherson I can barely read your comment Steve (you may want to consider using some periods beyond just ellipses), but I think I get what you're saying. Most of it is absolute nonsense.
First of all, I'm a hunter. So if you want to go ahead and discard everything I say, go ahead.
Let me explain to you what happens without predators, because that's what hunters are. We are not natural predators, that's true, but we are predators nonetheless. I personally hunt elk in Colorado. Without elk hunters controlling the population of elk, the population would explode, leading to starvation due to lack of food sources. You know how you were talking about the human population growing too fast? Same thing would happen.
As far as moving to the territory of the animals, yes, that's true. I can only assume that you exists somewhere on this planet, and therefore you are living in the territory of many species of animals. If you're going to berate someone for doing that, move to somewhere without animals, and where animals have never existed.
I would caution you against claiming you know how many bears this man has seen, since you don't live in his back yard. If you think you can guarantee that there haven't been that many bears (especially given that his daughter has named them individually, and by inference can identify them), you're mistaken.
I've known many hunters, and the vast majority of them are far more respectful of wildlife than the average person. Until you spend some time with some of us, stop thinking you know everything about us.
As far as White Rhinos, you've got your story wrong. First, the last male northern white rhino has died, yes. There are two females still living, and there are ongoing attempts to get them pregnant with the genetic material from the male. He did not die because of poachers, he died because he was 45 years old.
The White Rhino, which is the species of which the Northern White Rhino is a subspecies, is in a "Near Threatened" status, and the population is increasing.
As far as your arguments on the evils of man, I saw a video of a pride of Lions that attacked a group of Cheetahs, killed them, and then left them to rot. They were getting revenge for the Cheetahs killing a lion cub in their pride.
Hunting is destroying, yes. Not hunting destroys more. Deal with it.

Devils advocate here I don't think hunting is bad but ill try to give their logic: While shooting an animal with a semiautomatic gun (people do it not all hunters but their are some irresponsible ones that dump mags) it at least has a high chance of outright killing an animal, so if you have to, then use something that will get the job done fast.
I do think that animals should be hunted with the most leathal option available so I can get why people really don't like the idea of a dude hunting with a bliwdart gun when he has access to firearms.
Also some of you fellow bow hunters really need to practice more or have a buddy with a rifle cause God damn some of tall are awful shots. Fishing With Bottles , Actually, blowgun accuracy isnt that hard IF you practice!! I used them a lot as a kid hunting rabbits, squirlls, even knocking sparrows out of the sky. This man is totally correct, IF one PRACTICES it comes naturally. We used street cleaner flat wires sharpened on the sidewalks & foam rubber for the fluffs & electric conduit pipe for the blowguns. Long darts for bigger game & short darts for flying birds. Commercial ones hadn't been invented yet so we "Improvized" Bored kids & long summers between school made our whole neighborhoods kids blowgunners. Some of the older guys made darts from long nails & wrapped 3/4 inch masking tape around the hammer end til it fit the pipe & killed the crap out of the rattlesnakes w head shots. We had rabid feral cats running about infected from the fleas on the local sick groundsquirlls. Blowguns ended that problem very quickly. Made poison darts by spraying the tips w hairspray & rolling them in dried rattler venom. A second coat sealed the dried venom on the darts end & when the cats were hit anywhere the hairspray dissolved & released the venom into the cats. They didnt run far. Old indian trick.

What makes this interesting is not so much that such a small dart was able to kill the bear (the dart is, after all, much larger than a rifle round) but rather that the hunters' lungs were able to provide the force to drive that dart clean through the bear from 12 feet. I guess it is "momentum" (heavy projectile), an extra sharp blade, and precision of aim that enables this feat. Certainly it can't be velocity!

two little tricks I've picked up in my years in the woods; 1. A really effective and efficient way of sharpening a blade/arrowhead/blowdart in the field is to use a miniature disposable nail file. they're cheap, lightweight, come in multiple grits and tiny enough to fit into even a little altoid's tin "survival" kit. 2. The quickest and most effective means I've found for stripping bark from branches is with a potato peeler. arrowmaking, self-bows, bark cordage, all become an absolute breeze with this simple, humble and cheap little tool.

@@underarmbowlingincidentof1981 Yes, evasive opportunity. In his videos, there are plenty of moments when animals just don't like the feel of the situation and scurry off long before he can even attempt a throw. Because the throw has to be almost perfect, within a very tight window. Look how long it took him during his grizzly hunt, if he had a rifle he would have just shot the first bear that came along.
Factory farming is the "quickest and most painless" way of slaughtering meat - but many consider it far less ethical than hunting, which objectively is a more violent and drawn out death (when large game gets lunged with a rifle, it still takes quite a long time to bleed out).. Wound channels from slicing (broadheads and spears) bleed out much faster than wound channels from tearing (bullet penetration/expansion).

What is wrong with shooting the first bear?
Make it quicker and less painful for the bear... I don't see anything wrong with that. The only reason to use a more primitive weapon is to make the process longer and more enjoyable for yourself which is really weird.
mate if factory farming was painless then we wouldn't have a problem with it... the fact you believe its "quick and painless" is mind boggling. It aint quick and it aint painless...
factory farming is one of the worst places an animal could die in. Its a slow process filled with fear.
if you have to end a life, do it quickly. its not a fair playing field, so no reason to pretend it is. evasive opportunity is irrelevant. human beings have the capability of mercy and when someone willingly goes against this then that says a lot about a character.

I don't know anything about dangerous wild animals, but often I hear from people that lions fear humans and when they see humans they run the other way. Watching this video makes me think that is a lie, the bear seems pretty comfortable enough to go and grab a bite while the human is next to the food. Why aren't bears afraid and run the other way? After so many generations of hunting I would think bears would learn to avoid humans. I'am also amazed by his accuracy and his skill. Still take precautions while around bears as they tend to be very annoyingly persistent.
