BEATLES in BRISBANE - All the Buildings They Knew are Gone!

  • Brisbane was the last stop of the Beatles' 1964 World Tour. Strange to think that every building that visited is now gone. Eagle Farm Airport has been built over. Lennon's Hotel where they stayed was demolished in 1972. The Eagle Heights Hotel burnt down, and Festival Hall was demolished in 2003.

My mum saw one of the shows, sadly I already had been born and was not in utero. She reckoned she could not hear them at all, but she saw 'em play. When Macca hit the GC last year, I finally had the pleasure, too.

Hey Rob - great video. I used to work in the building next to Festival Hall. I managed to get a few bricks while it was being demolished and they are now part of the garden path at the side of my house. One of my co-workers got the actual seat she sat in from the Beatles concert (because she still had her ticket). From memory I think it was a whole row of seats because they were attached.

Only knew Lennon’s on Queen Street for the $7 seafood buffet on a Sunday. This will be good to share with my mum, remembering the old buildings, sadly Brisbane likes to demo. I thought for sure it would have been St Bernard’s hotel at Tamborine, I wasn’t aware of the timber Eagles Heights hotel. Great story to remember.

@Wendy Fry I really enjoyed researching and travelling to the places in this video. As a huge Beatle fan I really learnt a lot. And coming from Sydney where a lot of old buildings still exist, the contrast with Brisbane is quite astounding and distressing. I just hope current administrations don't knock down any more old ones - there's just not that many left.

@@walkaboutwithrob as a Brisbanite if I want to see historical buildings i head to Melbourne although I did search for Matthew Flinders cat in Sydney by the direction in Bryce Courtney’s book by the same name.
A bit of a Beatles fascination myself saw the Beatles story in Liverpool, then walked the Albert docks with lots of plagues and information boards, you would be in heaven.

My father was the restaurant manager of Lennon's and organised the food for the Beatles . My dad hated them they destroyed the rooms they were in . I own some of the plates they ate off while staying at Lennon's.
The old Lennon's where the Beatles stayed in is now called the Mecure hotel just across the street from the old City Hall.

@Spaceman Leo actually the old Lennon's Hotel was on George Street and the corner of Ann St. There is a map of its location in my video at 1:42

Tearing down Festival Hall and replacing it with a meaningless nothing building is one of the greatest travesties in Brisbane history! Irreplaceable! Stupid politicians!

When the Beatles visited Brisbane there were thousands of screaming fans in Queen St. I was in the Kings Building having singing lessons from Mr Will Stay, organist of the City Tabernacle Baptist Church. I was singing "I dream of Jeanie with the light brown hair". The cultural difference was bigger than the grand canyon.

I don’t know why they threw eggs and so forth at them. The infamous “Beatles are bigger than Jesus “ was in 1966. That was the beginning of the end of the Beatles massive popularity. I suppose they made the mistake of talking about politics or religion when they should have just kept quiet.
Anyway those security guards that accompanied them up to Mt Tamborine and the Gold Coast would have some interesting stories. Probably too old or gone now but I’m sure their families were told plenty
