It work a little bit but not enough. Then US took all rice, burn all rice fields, kill all man they think Vietcong. That doesn't work as well. More villagers joined Vietcong, even woman. They lived in jungle and Cu Chi tunnels. Basically, they are more brutal than North Vietnam troops because they saw US killed their people. They also gave "Vietnam flashback" to US army. So technically US troops just choose deaths

When the french army started their brutality against the Vietnamese, Ho Chi Minn himself asked for us help. Ho chi minn was a western educated man he was no communist, but the united states refuse to help cuz french were their allies and that made ho chi minn to seek the help of another super power of that time the soviets, the situation was so bad that he even asked the help of chinese whom vietnamese think as their eternal enemy. It is the very united states that made the vietnam communist. If the us intervenes and help ho chi minn when the french reoccupies vietnam than ho chi minn would've never asked for soviet's help and vietnam would've been an us ally in south asia.
